Claims
- 1. A base station for wireless communication with a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination one of said subscriber units over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies using repetitive time frames, each said time frame comprising a sequence of time slots, said channel being defined as having the same one or more of said time slots from said sequence of time slots in one or more of said time frames, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit capable of assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent to said destination subscriber unit, wherein said duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same frame, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots of each time frame have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment, and therefore said channel assignment, by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals onto the assigned channel; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said destination subscriber unit using the assigned channel.
- 2. A base station as in claim 1, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 3. A base station as in claim 1, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 4. A base station as in claim 2, wherein other information signals comprise voice information.
- 5. A base station as in claim 1, wherein said information signals have a coding rate, and wherein different information signals may have different respective coding rates.
- 6. A base station as in claim 1, wherein said central processing unit is capable of assigning information signals having respective different coding rates to slots within the same time frame.
- 7. A base station as in claim 1, wherein said information signals are modulated onto one of said plurality of frequencies, and wherein different information signals may have different modulation types.
- 8. A base station as in claim 1, wherein said base station comprises a modulator for modulating the information signals onto the carrier frequency of the channel, said modulator being capable of modulating different information signals having respective different modulation types, said central processing unit assigning information signals having respective different modulation types to slots in the same time frame.
- 9. A base station as in claim 8, wherein a first modulation type comprises PSK modulation.
- 10. A base station as in claim 1, wherein said base station further comprises a linear modulator including a linear amplifier.
- 11. A base station as in claim 8, wherein said modulator uses modulation to transmit at least 2 bits/symbol.
- 12. A base station as in claim I further comprising a receiver for receiving reverse information signals from an originating one of said subscriber units to a destination over a reverse channel at an assigned frequency, said reverse information signal being present on at least one time slot within the same time frame.
- 13. A base station as in claim 1, wherein at least one of said subscriber units is a mobile subscriber unit.
- 14. A base station for wireless communication with a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals to subscriber units in selected time slots of time frames of assigned frequencies wherein the time frames for each frequency have a predetermined number of time slots each having a predetermined position in the time frame and time division multiplex (TDM) channels are defined by one or more time slots having the same relative position in each of a frequency's time frames, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit which makes time slot assignments for segments of each information signal to be sent to a subscriber unit, such that segments of a particular information signal are assigned to the time slots of a selected TDM channel; said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slot positions in the time frames of each frequency are allocated to which TDM channels and providing said assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing information signal segments into series corresponding to time slot assignments; and a transmitter for transmitting the multiplexed information signal segments to subscriber units on frequencies corresponding to the time slot assignments.
- 15. A base station according to claim 14 wherein at least one frequency has N time slots per time frame where N is at least 4 and N TDM channels are assigned for that frequency such that an ith TDM channel corresponds to the time slots of an ith time slot position of the frequency's time frames, for i=1 to N, and the central processing unit assigns a series of segments, which series combine to constitute a given information signal, to the ith time slot of consecutive time frames of the frequency in order to communicate the given information signal to a subscriber unit via the ith TDM channel of the frequency.
- 16. A base station according to claim 14 further comprising an information signal buffer unit associated with said multiplexer that provides information signals in segments of a selected size to the multiplexer corresponding to time slot assignments.
- 17. A base station according to claim 14 wherein the central processing unit assigns segments of information signals intended for different subscriber units in different time slots of the same TDM channel.
- 18. A base station according to claim 14 wherein the central processing unit assigns time slots of consecutive time frames for each segment of a given information signal.
- 19. A base station according to claim 14 further comprising a receiver for receiving signals on reception frequencies wherein each frequency used for transmission has an associated frequency used for reception such that received signals on each respective reception frequency have time frames having the same predetermined number of time slots as transmitted signals on the associated transmission frequency.
- 20. A base station according to claim 19 wherein each frequency used for transmission is different from its associated frequency used for reception and is separated therefrom by about 5 MHz.
- 21. A base station according to claim 14 capable of communicating voice information signals further comprising a voice coder unit for compressing a voice information signal into a compressed voice information signal wherein said central processing unit makes time slot assignments for segments of compressed voice information signals output by said voice coder unit.
- 22. A base station according to claim 14 capable of communicating command information signals wherein said central processing unit makes time slot assignments for segments of command information signals to a TDM channel designated as a Radio Control Channel for command information signals for all subscriber units.
- 23. A base station according to claim 14 wherein said central processing unit allocates and deallocates time slot positions of frequency time frames by consulting said memory to dynamically define TDM channels.
- 24. A base station according to claim 23 wherein at least one frequency has time frames which each have four time slots and wherein said central processing unit allocates either one or two time slots per time frame for the frequency's TDM channels such that the central processor allocates for the frequency a maximum of four TDM channels, each corresponding to the time slots of a respective first, second, third or fourth time slot position of each of the frequency's time frame and a minimum of two TDM channels, one corresponding to the time slots of first and second time slot positions of the frequency's time frames and the other corresponding to the time slots of third and fourth time slot positions of the frequency's time frames.
- 25. A base station for wireless communication with a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals to subscriber units in selected time slots of time frames of assigned frequencies wherein the time frames for each frequency have a predetermined number of time slots, each time slot having a predetermined position in the time frame, and channels are defined by a group of time slots having the same relative position in each of a frequency's time frames, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit which makes time slot assignments for segments of each information signal to be sent to a subscriber unit, such that segments of a particular information signal are assigned to the time slots of a selected channel; said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slot positions in the time frames of each frequency are allocated to which channels and providing said assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing information signal segments into series corresponding to time slot assignments; and a transmitter for transmitting the multiplexed information signal segments to subscriber units on frequencies corresponding to the time slot assignments.
- 26. A base station for wireless communication with a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination one of said subscriber units over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies, said channel comprising a plurality of repetitive time slots, with a series of consecutive time slots defining a time frame, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit capable of assigning at least one time slot in the same time frame for the information signals to be sent to said destination subscriber unit, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals in accordance with said time slot assignment; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said destination subscriber unit using the assigned time slots within the time frame.
- 27. A base station as in claim 26, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 28. A base station as in claim 26, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 29. A base station as in claim 27, wherein other information signals comprise voice information.
- 30. A base station as in claim 26, wherein said information signals have a coding rate, and wherein different information signals may have different respective coding rates.
- 31. A base station as in claim 26, wherein said central processing unit is capable of assigning information signals having respective different coding rates to slots within the same time frame.
- 32. A base station as in claim 26, wherein said information signals are modulated onto one of said plurality of frequencies, and wherein different information signals may have different modulation types.
- 33. A base station as in claim 26, wherein said base station comprises a modulator for modulating the information signals onto the carrier frequency of the channel, said modulator being capable of modulating different information signals having respective different modulation types, said central processing unit assigning information signals having respective different modulation types to slots in the same time frame.
- 34. A base station as in claim 33, wherein a first modulation type comprises PSK modulation.
- 35. A base station as in claim 26, wherein said base station further comprises a linear modulator including a linear amplifier.
- 36. A base station as in claim 33, wherein said modulator uses modulation to transmit at least 2 bits/symbol.
- 37. A base station as in claim 26 further comprising a receiver for receiving reverse information signals from an originating one of said subscriber units to a destination over a reverse channel at an assigned frequency, said reverse information signal being present on at least one time slot within the same time frame.
- 38. A base station as in claim 26, wherein at least one of said subscriber units is a mobile subscriber unit.
- 39. A base station for wireless communication with a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination one of said subscriber units over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies, said channel comprising at least one time slot from a time frame repeating over time, each said time frame comprising a finite series of time slots, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit capable of defining a channel by assigning a duration of time for each of the information signals being sent to said destination subscriber unit, wherein said duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same time frame, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots in each time frame have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals onto the channel; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said destination subscriber unit over the channel.
- 40. A base station as in claim 39, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 41. A base station as in claim 39, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 42. A base station as in claim 40, wherein other information signals comprise voice information.
- 43. A base station as in claim 39, wherein said information signals have a coding rate, and wherein different information signals may have different respective coding rates.
- 44. A base station as in claim 39, wherein said central processing unit is capable of assigning information signals having respective different coding rates to slots within the same time frame.
- 45. A base station as in claim 39, wherein said information signals are modulated onto one of said plurality of frequencies, and wherein different information signals may have different modulation types.
- 46. A base station as in claim 39, wherein said base station comprises a modulator for modulating the information signals onto the carrier frequency of the channel, said modulator being capable of modulating different information signals having respective different modulation types, said central processing unit assigning information signals having respective different modulation types to slots in the same time frame.
- 47. A base station as in claim 46, wherein a first modulation type comprises PSK modulation.
- 48. A base station as in claim 39, wherein said base station further comprises a linear modulator including a linear amplifier.
- 49. A base station as in claim 46, wherein said modulator uses modulation to transmit at least 2 bits/symbol.
- 50. A base station as in claim 39 further comprising a receiver for receiving reverse information signals from an originating one of said subscriber units to a destination over a reverse channel at an assigned frequency, said reverse information signal being present on multiple time slot within the same time frame.
- 51. A base station as in claim 39, wherein at least one of said subscriber units is a mobile subscriber unit.
- 52. A base station for wireless communication with a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination one of said subscriber units at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies and over an assigned channel, using a repeating time frame, said time frame having a plurality of time slots, said channel being defined by at least one of said time slots in each time frame, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit capable of assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent to said one destination subscriber unit, wherein said duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same time frame, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots in each time frame have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment, and therefore said channel assignment, by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals onto the assigned channel; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said destination subscriber unit using the assigned channel.
- 53. A base station as in claim 52, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 54. A base station as in claim 52, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 55. A base station as in claim 53, wherein other information signals comprise voice information.
- 56. A base station as in claim 52, wherein said information signals have a coding rate, and wherein different information signals may have different respective coding rates.
- 57. A base station as in claim 52, wherein said central processing unit is capable of assigning information signals having respective different coding rates to slots within the same time frame.
- 58. A base station as in claim 52, wherein said information signals are modulated onto one of said plurality of frequencies, and wherein different information signals may have different modulation types.
- 59. A base station as in claim 52, wherein said base station comprises a modulator for modulating the information signals onto the carrier frequency of the channel, said modulator being capable of modulating different information signals having respective different modulation types, said central processing unit assigning information signals having respective different modulation types to slots in the same time frame.
- 60. A base station as in claim 59, wherein a first modulation type comprises PSK modulation.
- 61. A base station as in claim 52, wherein said base station further comprises a linear modulator including a linear amplifier.
- 62. A base station as in claim 59, wherein said modulator uses modulation to transmit at least 2 bits/symbol.
- 63. A base station as in claim 52 further comprising a receiver for receiving reverse information signals from an originating one of said subscriber units to a destination over a reverse channel at an assigned frequency, said reverse information signal being present on at least one time slot within the same time frame.
- 64. A base station as in claim 52, wherein at least one of said subscriber units is a mobile subscriber unit.
- 65. A base station for wireless communication with a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination one of said subscriber units over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies, using a repeating time frame, each time frame having a plurality of time slots, said channel being defined by at least one repetitive time slot from a plurality of time frames, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit capable of assigning channels by assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent to said destination subscriber unit, wherein said duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same time frame, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots in each time frame have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals onto the assigned channels; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said destination subscriber unit using the assigned channels.
- 66. A base station as in claim 65, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 67. A base station as in claim 65, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 68. A base station as in claim 66, wherein other information signals comprise voice information.
- 69. A base station as in claim 65, wherein said information signals have a coding rate, and wherein different information signals may have different respective coding rates.
- 70. A base station as in claim 65, wherein said central processing unit is capable of assigning information signals having respective different coding rates to slots within the same time frame.
- 71. A base station as in claim 65, wherein said information signals are modulated onto one of said plurality of frequencies, and wherein different information signals may have different modulation types.
- 72. A base station as in claim 65, wherein said base station comprises a modulator for modulating the information signals onto the carrier frequency of the channel, said modulator being capable of modulating different information signals having respective different modulation types, said central processing unit assigning information signals having respective different modulation types to slots in the same time frame.
- 73. A base station as in claim 72, wherein a first modulation type comprises PSK modulation.
- 74. A base station as in claim 65, wherein said base station further comprises a linear modulator including a linear amplifier.
- 75. A base station as in claim 72, wherein said modulator uses modulation to transmit at least 2 bits/symbol.

A base station as in claim 65 further comprising a receiver for receiving reverse information signals from an originating one of said subscriber units to a destination over a reverse channel at an assigned frequency, said reverse information signals being present on multiple time slots within the same frame.
- 77. A base station as in claim 65, wherein at least one of said subscriber units is a mobile subscriber unit.
- 78. A system for facilitating wireless communication between a base station and a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination one of said subscriber units over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies using repetitive time frames, each said time frame comprising a sequence of time slots, said channel being defined as having the same one or more of said time slots from said sequence of time slots in one or more of said time frames, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit capable of assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent to said destination subscriber unit, wherein said duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same frame, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots of each time frame have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment, and therefore said channel assignment, by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals onto the assigned channel; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said destination subscriber unit using the assigned channel.
- 79. A system as in claim 78, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 80. A system as in claim 78, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 81. A system as in claim 79, wherein other information signals comprise voice information.
- 82. A system as in claim 78, wherein said information signals have a coding rate, and wherein different information signals may have different respective coding rates.
- 83. A system as in claim 78, wherein said central processing unit is capable of assigning information signals having respective different coding rates to slots within the same time frame.
- 84. A system as in claim 78, wherein said information signals are modulated onto one of said plurality of frequencies, and wherein different information signals may have different modulation types.
- 85. A system as in claim 78, wherein said base station includes a modulator for modulating the information signals onto the carrier frequency of the channel, said modulator being capable of modulating different information signals having respective different modulation types, said central processing unit assigning information signals having respective different modulation types to slots in the same time frame.
- 86. A system as in claim 85, wherein at least one of said modulation types comprises PSK modulation.
- 87. A system as in claim 78, wherein said base station further includes a linear modulator including a linear amplifier.
- 88. A system as in claim 85, wherein said modulator uses modulation to transmit at least 2 bits/symbol.
- 89. A system as in claim 78, further comprising a receiver for receiving reverse information signals from an originating one of said subscriber units to a destination over a reverse channel at an assigned frequency, said reverse information signal being present on at least one time slot.
- 90. A system as in claim 78, wherein at least one of said subscriber units is a mobile subscriber unit.
- 91. A system for supporting wireless communication between a base station and a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals to subscriber units in selected time slots of time frames of assigned frequencies wherein the time frames for each frequency have a predetermined number of time slots each having a predetermined position in the time frame and time division multiplex (TDM) channels are defined by one or more time slots having the same relative position in each of a frequency's time frames, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit which makes time slot assignments for segments of each information signal to be sent to a subscriber unit, such that segments of a particular information signal are assigned to the time slots of a selected TDM channel; said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slot positions in the time frames of each frequency are allocated to which TDM channels and providing said assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing information signal segments into series corresponding to time slot assignments; and a transmitter for transmitting the multiplexed information signal segments to subscriber units on frequencies corresponding to the time slot assignments.
- 92. A system according to claim 91 wherein at least one frequency has N time slots per time frame where N is at least 4 and N TDM channels are assigned for that frequency such that an ith TDM channel corresponds to the time slots of an ith time slot position of the frequency's time frames, for i=1 to N, and the central processing unit assigns a series of segments, which series combine to constitute a given information signal, to the ith time slot of consecutive time frames of the frequency in order to communicate the given information signal to a subscriber unit via the ith TDM channel of the frequency.
- 93. A system according to claim 91 further comprising an information signal buffer unit associated with said multiplexer that provides information signals in segments of a selected size to the multiplexer corresponding to time slot assignments.
- 94. A system according to claim 91 wherein the central processing unit assigns segments of information signals intended for different subscriber units in different time slots of the same TDM channel.
- 95. A system according to claim 91 wherein the central processing unit assigns time slots of consecutive time frames for each segment of a given information signal.
- 96. A system according to claim 91 whereby the base station further comprises a receiver for receiving signals on reception frequencies wherein each frequency used for transmission has an associated frequency used for reception such that received signals on each respective reception frequency have time frames having the same predetermined number of time slots as transmitted signals on the associated transmission frequency.
- 97. A system according to claim 96 wherein each frequency used for transmission is different from its associated frequency used for reception and is separated therefrom by about 5 MHz.
- 98. A system according to claim 91 further comprising a voice coder unit for compressing a voice information signal into a compressed voice information signal wherein said central processing unit makes time slot assignments for segments of compressed voice information signals output by said voice coder unit.
- 99. A system according to claim 91 capable of communicating command information signals wherein said central processing unit makes time slot assignments for segments of command information signals to a TDM channel designated as a Radio Control Channel for command information signals for all subscriber units.
- 100. A system according to claim 91 wherein said central processing unit allocates and deallocates time slot positions of frequency time frames by consulting said memory to dynamically define TDM channels.
- 101. A system according to claim 100 wherein at least one frequency has time frames which each have four time slots and wherein said central processing unit allocates either one or two time slots per time frame for the frequency's TDM channels such that the central processor allocates for the frequency a maximum of four TDM channels, each corresponding to the time slots of a respective first, second, third or fourth time slot position of each of the frequency's time frame and a minimum of two TDM channels, one corresponding to the time slots of first and second time slot positions of the frequency's time frames and the other corresponding to the time slots of third and fourth time slot positions of the frequency's time frames.
- 102. A system for facilitating wireless communication between a base station and a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals to subscriber units in selected time slots of time frames of assigned frequencies wherein the time frames for each frequency have a predetermined number of time slots each having a predetermined position in the time frame, and channels are defined by a group of time slots having the same relative position in each of a frequency's time frames, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit which makes time slot assignments for segments of each information signal to be sent to a subscriber unit, such that segments of a particular information signal are assigned to the time slots of a selected channel; said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slot positions in the time frames of each frequency are allocated to which channels and providing said assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing information signal segments into a series corresponding to time slot assignments; and a transmitter for transmitting the multiplexed information signal segments to subscriber units on frequencies corresponding to the time slot assignments.
- 103. A system as in claim 102, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 104. A system as in claim 102, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 105. A system as in claim 103, wherein other information signals comprise voice information.
- 106. A system as in claim 102, wherein said information signals have a coding rate, and wherein different information signals may have different respective coding rates.
- 107. A system as in claim 102, wherein said central processing unit is capable of assigning information signals having respective different coding rates to slots within the same time frame.
- 108. A system as in claim 102, wherein said information signals are modulated onto one of said frequencies, and wherein different information signals may have different modulation types.
- 109. A system as in claim 102, wherein said base station comprises a modulator for modulating the information signals onto the carrier frequency of the channel, said modulator being capable of modulating different information signals having respective different modulation types, and said central processing unit assigning information signals having respective different modulation types to slots in the same time frame.
- 110. A system as in claim 109, wherein one of said modulation types comprises PSK modulation.
- 111. A system as in claim 102, wherein said base station further comprises a linear modulator including a linear amplifier.
- 112. A system as in claim 109, wherein said modulator uses modulation to transmit at least 2 bits/symbol.
- 113. A system as in claim 102 and further comprising a receiver for receiving reverse information signals from an originating one of said subscriber units to a destination over a reverse channel at an assigned frequency, said reverse information signal being present on at least one time slot.
- 114. A system as in claim 102, wherein at least one of said subscriber units is a mobile subscriber unit.
- 115. A system for facilitating wireless communication between a base station and a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination one of said subscriber units over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies, said channel comprising a plurality of repetitive time slots, with a series of consecutive time slots defining a time frame, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit capable of assigning at least one time slot in the same time frame for the information signals to be sent to said destination subscriber unit, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals in accordance with said time slot assignment; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said destination subscriber unit using the assigned time slots.
- 116. A system as in claim 115, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 117. A system as in claim 115, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 118. A system as in claim 116, wherein other information signals comprise voice information.
- 119. A system as in claim 115, wherein said information signals have a coding rate, and wherein different information signals may have different respective coding rates.
- 120. A system as in claim 115, wherein said central processing unit is capable of assigning information signals having respective different coding rates to slots within the same time frame.
- 121. A system as in claim 115, wherein said information signals are modulated onto one of said frequencies, and wherein different information signals may have different modulation types.

A system as in claim 115, wherein said base station comprises a modulator for modulating the information signals onto the carrier frequency of the channel, said modulator being capable of modulating different information signals having respective different modulation types, and said central processing unit assigning information signals having respective different modulation types to slots in the same time frame.
- 123. A system as in claim 122, wherein one of said modulation types comprises PSK modulation.
- 124. A system as in claim 115, wherein said base station further comprises a linear modulator including a linear amplifier.
- 125. A system as in claim 122, wherein said modulator uses modulation to transmit at least 2 bits/symbol.
- 126. A system as in claim 115, whereby said base station further comprises a receiver for receiving reverse information signals from an originating one of said subscriber units to a destination over a reverse channel at an assigned frequency, said reverse information signal being present on at least one time slot.
- 127. A system as in claim 115, wherein at least one of said subscriber units is a mobile subscriber unit.
- 128. A system for facilitating wireless communication between a base station and a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination one of said subscriber units over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies, said channel comprising at least one time slot from a time frame repeating over time, each said time frame comprising a finite series of time slots, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit capable of defining a channel by assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent to said destination subscriber unit, wherein said duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same time frame, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots in each time frame have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals onto the channel; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said destination subscriber unit over the channel.
- 129. A system as in claim 128, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 130. A system as in claim 128, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 131. A system as in claim 129, wherein other information signals comprise voice information.
- 132. A system as in claim 128, wherein said information signals have a coding rate, and wherein different information signals may have different respective coding rates.
- 133. A system as in claim 128, wherein said central processing unit is capable of assigning information signals having respective different coding rates to slots within the same time frame.
- 134. A system as in claim 128, wherein said information signals are modulated onto a carrier frequency of the channel, and wherein different information signals may have different modulation types.
- 135. A system as in claim 128, wherein said base station comprises a modulator for modulating the information signals onto the carrier frequency of the channel, said modulator being capable of modulating different information signals having respective different modulation types, said central processing unit assigning information signals having respective different modulation types to slots in the same time frame.
- 136. A system as in claim 135, wherein a modulation type comprises PSK modulation.
- 137. A system as in claim 128, wherein said base station further comprises a linear modulator including a linear amplifier.
- 138. A system as in claim 135, wherein said modulator uses modulation to transmit at least 2 bits/symbol.
- 139. A system as in claim 128 and further comprising a receiver for receiving reverse information signals from an originating one of said subscriber units to a destination over a reverse channel at an assigned frequency, said reverse information signal being present on at least one time slot with a time frame.
- 140. A system as in claim 128, wherein at least one of said subscriber units is a mobile subscriber unit.
- 141. A system for supporting wireless communication between a base station and a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination one of said subscriber units at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies and over an assigned channel, using a repeating time frame, said time frame having a plurality of time slots, said channel being defined by at least one of said time slots in each time frame, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit capable of assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent to said one destination subscriber unit, wherein said duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same time frame, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots in each time frame have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals onto the assigned time slots; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said destination subscriber unit using the assigned time slots.
- 142. A system as in claim 141, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 143. A system as in claim 141, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 144. A system as in claim 142, wherein other information signals comprise voice information.
- 145. A system as in claim 141, wherein said information signals have a coding rate, and wherein different information signals may have different respective coding rates.
- 146. A system as in claim 141, wherein said central processing unit is capable of assigning information signals having respective different coding rates to slots within the same time frame.
- 147. A system as in claim 141, wherein said information signals are modulated onto one of said plurality of frequencies, and wherein different information signals may have different modulation types.

A system as in claim 141, wherein said base station comprises a modulator for modulating the information signals onto the carrier frequency of the channel, said modulator being capable of modulating different information signals having respective different modulation types, and said central processing unit assigning information signals having respective different modulation types to slots in the same time frame.
- 149. A system as in claim 148, wherein a first modulation type comprises PSK modulation.
- 150. A system as in claim 141, wherein said base station further comprises a linear modulator including a linear amplifier.
- 151. A system as in claim 148, wherein said modulator uses modulation to transmit at least 2 bits/symbol.

A system as in claim 141, wherein said base station further comprises a receiver for receiving reverse information signals from an originating one of said subscriber units to a destination over a reverse channel at an assigned frequency, said reverse information signal being present on multiple time slots within the same time frame.
- 153. A system as in claim 141, wherein at least one of said subscriber units is a mobile subscriber unit.
- 154. A system for supporting wireless communication between a base station and a plurality of subscriber units, the base station communicating information signals from an originating source to a destination one of said subscriber units over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies, using a repeating time frame, each time frame having a plurality of time slots, said channel being defined by at least one repetitive time slot from a plurality of time frames, said base station comprising:
a central processing unit capable of assigning channels by assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent to said destination subscriber unit, wherein said duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same time frame, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots in each time frame have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals onto the assigned time slots; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said destination subscriber unit using the assigned time slots.
- 155. A system as in claim 154, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 156. A system as in claim 154, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 156. A system as in claim 155, wherein other information signals comprise voice information.

- 165. A system as in claim 154, wherein at least one of said subscriber units is a mobile subscriber unit.
- 166. A User Equipment (UE) which facilitates wireless communication with at least one other communicating unit, the UE communicating information signals to said communicating unit over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies using repetitive time frames, each said time frame comprising a sequence of time slots, said channel being defined as having the same one or more of said time slots from said sequence of time slots in one or more of said time frames, said UE comprising:
a central processing unit capable of assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent to said communicating unit, wherein said duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same frame, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots of each time frame have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment, and therefore said a channel assignment, by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals onto the assigned channel; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said communicating unit using the assigned channel.
- 167. A UE as in claim 166, wherein within the same time frame other information signals are assigned time slots other than said timeslots.
- 168. A UE as in claim 166, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 169. A UE as in claim 167, wherein said other information signals comprise voice information.
- 170. A UE as in claim 166, wherein said information signals have a coding rate, and wherein said other information signals may have different respective coding rates.

- 175. A UE as in claim 166, further including a linear modulator having a linear amplifier.

- 177. A UE as in claim 166, further comprising a receiver for receiving reverse information signals from said communicating unit over a reverse channel at an assigned frequency, said reverse information signal being present on at least one time slot.
- 178. A UE as in claim 166, wherein said communicating unit is a mobile unit.
- 179. A User Equipment (UE) for supporting wireless communication with at least one subscriber unit, the UE communicating information signals to said at least one subscriber unit in selected time slots of time frames of assigned frequencies wherein the time frames for each frequency have a predetermined number of time slots each having a predetermined position in the time frame and time division multiplex (TDM) channels are defined by one or more time slots having the same relative position in each of a frequency's time frames, said UE comprising:
a central processing unit which makes time slot assignments for segments of each information signal to be sent to said at least one subscriber unit, such that segments of a particular information signal are assigned to the time slots of a selected TDM channel; said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slot positions in the time frames of each frequency are allocated to which TDM channels and providing said assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing information signal segments into series corresponding to time slot assignments; and a transmitter for transmitting the multiplexed information signal segments to said at least one subscriber unit on frequencies corresponding to the time slot assignments.
- 180. A UE according to claim 179 wherein at least one frequency has N time slots per time frame where N is at least 4 and N TDM channels are assigned for that frequency such that an ith TDM channel corresponds to the time slots of an ith time slot position of the frequency's time frames, for i=1 to N, and the central processing unit assigns a series of segments, which series combine to constitute a given information signal, to the ith time slot of consecutive time frames of the frequency in order to communicate the given information signal to a subscriber unit via the ith TDM channel of the frequency.
- 181. A UE according to claim 179 further comprising an information signal buffer unit associated with said multiplexer that provides information signals in segments of a selected size to the multiplexer corresponding to time slot assignments.
- 182. A UE according to claim 179 wherein the central processing unit assigns segments of information signals intended for different subscriber units in different time slots of the same TDM channel.
- 183. A UE according to claim 179 wherein the central processing unit assigns time slots of consecutive time frames for each segment of a given information signal.
- 184. A UE according to claim 179, further comprising a receiver for receiving signals on reception frequencies wherein each frequency used for transmission has an associated frequency used for reception such that received signals on each respective reception frequency have time frames having the same predetermined number of time slots as transmitted signals on the associated transmission frequency.
- 185. A UE according to claim 184 wherein each frequency used for transmission is different from its associated frequency used for reception and is separated therefrom by about 5 MHz.
- 186. A UE according to claim 179 further comprising a voice coder unit for compressing a voice information signal into a compressed voice information signal wherein said central processing unit makes time slot assignments for segments of compressed voice information signals output by said voice coder unit.
- 187. A UE according to claim 179 capable of communicating command information signals wherein said central processing unit makes time slot assignments for segments of command information signals to a TDM channel designated as a Radio Control Channel for command information signals.
- 188. A UE according to claim 179 wherein said central processing unit allocates and deallocates time slot positions of frequency time frames by consulting said memory to dynamically define TDM channels.
- 189. A UE according to claim 188 wherein at least one frequency has time frames which each have four time slots and wherein said central processing unit allocates either one or two time slots per time frame for the frequency's TDM channels such that the central processor allocates for the frequency a maximum of four TDM channels, each corresponding to the time slots of a respective first, second, third or fourth time slot position of each of the frequency's time frame and a minimum of two TDM channels, one corresponding to the time slots of first and second time slot positions of the frequency's time frames and the other corresponding to the time slots of third and fourth time slot positions of the frequency's time frames.
- 190. A UE for facilitating wireless communication with at least one subscriber unit, the UE communicating information signals to said at least one subscriber unit in selected time slots of time frames of assigned frequencies wherein the time frames for each frequency have a predetermined number of time slots each having a predetermined position in the time frame, and channels are defined by a group of time slots having the same relative position in each of a frequency's time frames, said UE comprising:
a central processing unit which makes time slot assignments for segments of each information signal to be sent to said at least one subscriber unit, such that segments of a particular information signal are assigned to the time slots of a selected channel; said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slot positions in the time frames of each frequency are allocated to which channels and providing said assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing information signal segments into a series corresponding to time slot assignments; and a transmitter for transmitting the multiplexed information signal segments to said at least one subscriber unit on frequencies corresponding to the time slot assignments.
- 191. A UE for facilitating wireless communication with at least one of a plurality of subscriber units, the UE communicating information signals to a destination one of said subscriber units over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies, said channel comprising a plurality of repetitive time slots, with a series of consecutive time slots defining a time frame, said UE comprising:
a central processing unit capable of assigning at least one time slot in the same time frame for the information signals to be sent to said destination subscriber unit, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals in accordance with said time slot assignment; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said destination subscriber unit using the assigned time slots within the time frame.
- 192. A UE as in claim 191, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 193. A UE as in claim 191, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 194. A UE as in claim 192, wherein other information signals comprise voice information.

a central processing unit capable of assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent to said destination subscriber unit, wherein said duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same time frame, said central processing unit maintaining a memory of which time slots in each time frame have been assigned and providing said time slot assignment, and therefore said channel assignment, by consulting said memory; a multiplexer for multiplexing the information signals onto the assigned channel; and a transmitter for transmitting the information signals to said destination subscriber unit using the assigned channel.
- 218. A UE as in claim 217, wherein within the same time frame other information signals from other originating sources are assigned time slots other than said time slots.

A method for facilitating wireless communication between an origination and a destination communicating unit over a channel at an assigned one of a plurality of frequencies using repetitive time frames, each said time frame comprising a sequence of time slots, said channel being defined as having the same one or more of said time slots from said sequence of time slots in one or more of said time frames, the method comprising:
assigning a duration of time for the information signals being sent, wherein said duration equals the duration of one or more time slots in the same frame; maintaining a memory of which time slots of each time frame have been assigned; providing said time slot assignment, and therefore said a channel assignment, by consulting said memory; multiplexing the information signals onto the assigned channel; and transmitting the information signals to said destination communicating unit using the assigned channel.
- 244. The method of claim 243, wherein within the same time frame other information signals are assigned time slots other than said time slots.
- 245. The method of claim 243, wherein said information signals comprise data information.
- 246. The method of claim 244, wherein said other information signals comprise voice information.
