Claims
- 1. A subsea communication system for communicating between a position proximal a surface of the sea and an apparatus of the seabed, comprising an umbilicalless communication system.
- 2. The subsea communication system of claim 1, wherein the umbilicalless communication system comprises:
a first acoustic modem located at a position proximal to the surface of the sea; and a second acoustic modem located at a position proximal to the seabed.
- 3. The subsea communication system of claim 2, wherein at least one of the first and second modems is positioned to transmit acoustic signals through an annulus inside a marine riser to perform the umbilicalless communication.
- 4. The subsea communication system of claim 2, wherein at least one of the first and second modems is positioned to communicate acoustic waves through a passageway of a production string to establish the umbilicalless communication.
- 5. The subsea communication system of claim 1, wherein the umbilicalless communication system comprises:
a first optical transceiver located at a position near the seabed; and a second optical transceiver located at a position near the surface of the sea.
- 6. The subsea communication system of claim 5, further comprising:
at least one laser repeater located between the first and second optical transceivers.
- 7. The subsea communication system of claim 5, wherein at least one of the first and second optical transceivers is connected to a marine riser.
- 8. The subsea communication system of claim 1, wherein the umbilicalless communication system comprises:
a first device located at a position near the seabed; and a second device located at a position near the surface of the sea to communicate with the first device.
- 9. The subsea communication system of claim 8, wherein the first and second devices establish electromagnetic communication through open seawater.
- 10. The subsea communication system of claim 8, wherein at least one of the first and second devices comprises a coil.
- 11. The subsea communication system of claim 8, wherein at least one of the first and second devices comprises an electrical dipole.
- 12. The subsea communication system of claim 1, wherein the umbilicalless communication system comprises:
a first current transceiver located at a position near the surface of the sea; and a second current transceiver located at a position near the sea floor.
- 13. The subsea communication system of claim 12, wherein at least one of the first and second transceivers comprises a toroid.
- 14. The subsea communication system of claim 12, further comprising:
a tubing through which the first and second transceivers communicate.
- 15. The subsea communication system of claim 14, further comprising:
at least one isolation joint to electrically subdivide the tubing.
- 16. The subsea communication system of claim 1, wherein the umbilicalless communication system comprises:
a first coil located at a position near the surface of the sea; and a second coil located at a position near the seabed, wherein the first and second coils communicate by electromagnetic induction through a tubing that extends between the first and second coils.
- 17. A subsea communication system comprising:
a tubular string extending between a sea surface platform and a well located on a sea floor; and an umbilicalless communication system to establish communication between a position near the platform and a position near the well.
- 18. The subsea communication system of claim 17, wherein the umbilicalless communication system comprises:
a first acoustic modem located at a position proximal to the surface of the sea; and a second acoustic modem located at a position proximal to the seabed.
- 19. The subsea communication system of claim 18, wherein at least one of the first and second modems is positioned to transmit acoustic signals through an annulus inside a marine riser to perform the umbilicalless communication.
- 20. The subsea communication system of claim 18, wherein at least one of the first and second modems is positioned to communicate acoustic waves through a passageway of a production string to establish the umbilicalless communication.
- 21. The subsea communication system of claim 17, wherein the umbilicalless communication system comprises:
a first optical transceiver located at a position near the seabed; and a second optical transceiver located at a position near the surface of the sea.
- 22. The subsea communication system of claim 21, further comprising:
at least one laser repeater located between the first and second optical transceivers.
- 23. The subsea communication system of claim 21, wherein at least one of the first and second optical transceivers is connected to a marine riser.
- 24. The subsea communication system of claim 17, wherein the umbilicalless communication system comprises:
a first device located at a position near the seabed; and a second device located at a position near the surface of the sea to communicate with the first device.
- 25. The subsea communication system of claim 24, wherein the first and second devices establish electromagnetic communication through open seawater.
- 26. The subsea communication system of claim 24, wherein at least one of the first and second devices comprises a coil.
- 27. The subsea communication system of claim 24, wherein at least one of the first and second devices comprises an electrical dipole.
- 28. The subsea communication system of claim 17, wherein the umbilicalless communication system comprises:
a first current transceiver located at a position near the surface of the sea; and a second current transceiver located at a position near the sea floor
- 29. The subsea communication system of claim 28, wherein at least one of the first and second transceivers comprises a toroid.
- 30. The subsea communication system of claim 28, further comprising:
a tubing through which the first and second transceivers communicate.
- 31. The subsea communication system of claim 29, further comprising:
at least one isolation joint to electrically subdivide the tubing.
- 32. The subsea communication system of claim 17, wherein the umbilicalless communication system comprises:
a first coil located at a position near the surface of the sea; and a second coil located at a position near the seabed, wherein the first and second coils communicate by electromagnetic induction through a tubing that extends between the first and second coils.
