Claims
- 1. For use in operating a pressure responsive downhole function of a subsea well production system, comprising,
a wellhead body having a vertical bore there through and an opening having a fluid passageway connecting at one end with a bore and adapted to be connected at its other end with a remote source of pressure fluid, a tubing hanger adapted to be lowered into a landed position within the bore of the wellhead body and having
a vertical bore from which a tubing string may be suspended within a well bore, a fluid passageway which, when the hanger is landed in the bore of the body, is oriented into a desired rotational position in which one end is aligned with and sealed with respect to the one end of the passageway in the body and its other end is adapted to connect to the pressure responsive function, a normally closed poppet valve mounted in the passageway in the tubing hanger and adapted, when open, to permit fluid pressure from the source to be supplied to the function, a port connecting with the hanger bore intermediate the poppet valve and function, and an adapter having
a body with a bore therein and sealably and removably mounted on the hanger to connect its bore with the port, a valve member mounted on the body for movement toward and away from the port to selectively close and open it, an actuator mounted on the adapter body and releasably connected to the member for so moving it, the adapter body having another port for connecting its bore with a second source of pressure fluid, so that, when the valve member is open, such fluid may be introduced into the bore of the body, and thus into the fluid passageway in the hanger to test the sealing integrity of the closed poppet valve, and, when the valve member is closed, the adapter may be removed from the hanger.
- 2. As in claim 2, wherein
the valve member comprises a plug threadedly mounted within a recess on the outer side of the hanger for movement between positions opening and closing the port, and the inner end of the actuator has a torque transmitting connection to the plug for moving the plug between the opened and closed positions.
- 3. As in claim 1, including
a cap which, upon removal of the adapter body and actuator, is sealably connected to the adapter bore so as to cover and thereby protect the valve member.
- 4. As in claim 2, wherein
the actuator body is sealably mounted within an opening in the adapter body, the adapter body has a flow passage connecting the first mentioned port with the bore intermediate the seal and valve member, and the plug has an opening connecting at one end with the flow passage in the adapter body and, at its outer end, with the adapter port so that fluid pressure from the second source may flow into the hanger passageway when the plug is in open position.
- 5. For use in operating a tubing safety valve of a subsea well production system, comprising,
a wellhead body having a vertical bore there through and an opening having a fluid passageway therein connecting at one end with the bore and adapted to be connected at its other end with a remote source of pressure fluid, a tubing hanger adapted to be lowered into a landed position within the bore of the wellhead body and having
a vertical bore from which a tubing string may be suspended within a well bore and which has a normally open safety valve therein adapted to be opened and closed by a pressure responsive operator, and a fluid passageway therein which, when the hanger is landed in the bore of the body, is oriented into a desired rotational position in which its end is aligned with and sealed with respect to the adjacent end of the passageway in the body, and at its one end with the operator, a normally closed poppet valve mounted in the passageway in the tubing hanger and adapted, when open, to permit fluid pressure from the source to be supplied to the operator to hold the safety valve open, and, when closed, to permit the safety valve to remain open, a port connecting with the hanger bore intermediate the poppet valve and operator, and an adapter having a body with a bore therein sealably and removably mounted on the hanger to connect its bore with the port, a valve member mounted on the hanger for movement toward and away from the port to selectively close and open it, and an actuator mounted on the adapter body for so moving the valve member, the adapter body having another port for connecting its bore with a second source of pressure fluid, so that, when the valve member is open, such fluid may be introduced into the bore of the body, and thus through the port into the fluid passageway in the first hanger opening, to test the sealing integrity of the poppet valve, and the valve member then closed to permit the adapter to be removed from the hanger, while holding the operator open.
- 6. As in claim 5, wherein
the valve member comprises a plug threadedly within a recess on the outer side of the hanger for movement between positions opening and closing the port, and the inner end of the actuator has a torque transmitting connection to the plug for moving the plug between the opened and closed positions.
- 7. As in claim 6, including
a cap which, upon removal of the adapter body and actuator, is sealably connected to the adapter bore so as to cover and thereby protect the valve member.
- 8. As in claim 5, wherein
the actuator body is sealably mounted within an opening in the adapter body, the adapter body has a flow passage connecting the first mentioned port with the bore intermediate the seal and valve member, and the plug has an opening connecting at one end with the flow passage in the adapter body and, at its outer end, with the adapter port so that fluid pressure from the second source may flow into the hanger passageway when the plug is in open position.
- 9. For use in operating a pressure responsive downhole function of a subsea well production system,
a tubing hanger adapted to be lowered into a landed position within the bore of a wellhead body and having a first bore from which a tubing string may be suspended within the wellhead body, a second bore forming a fluid passageway which is connected at one end with the pressure responsive function and in which a poppet valve is mounted to allow fluid pressure from a first source to be supplied to the downhole function, when open, and to hold the pressure on the function, when closed, a port in the hanger connecting at one end with the second bore of the hanger intermediate the poppet valve and the function, an adapter having a body removably mounted on the hanger for connecting the other end of the port with a second source of pressure fluid as the tubing string is so lowered, and a valve member on the body adapted to be moved between positions opening and closing the other end of the port, so that, when open, it permits the second pressure fluid to be supported to the function and test the sealing integrity of the poppet valve, and, when closed, permit the adapter body to be removed from the tubing hanger.
- 10. As in claim 9 including
a cap for disposal over the valve member when closed and the adapter body is removed from the tubing hanger.
