Claims
- 1. A hypochlorite-decomposition catalyst composition, said composition consisting essentially of
- pellets or particles of ceramic or refractory material having applied as a coating thereon,
- a substituted cobalt spinel conforming generally to the empirical structure
- M.sub.x N.sub.y Co.sub.3-(x+y) O.sub.4
- where zero<x.ltoreq.1; zero.ltoreq.y.ltoreq.0.5; zero<(x+2y).ltoreq.1; M is at least one metal of Periodic Table Groups IIA, and IIB; and N is at least one metal from Group IA.
- 2. The composition of claim 1 wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Zn, and Mg.
- 3. The composition of claim 1 wherein N is selected from the group consisting of Li, Na, and K.
- 4. The composition of claim 1 wherein M is selected from the group consisting of Zn, and Mg, and N is selected from the group consisting of Li, Na, and K.
- 5. The composition of claim 1 wherein the substituted cobalt spinel contains a modifier metal oxide consisting of an oxide of zirconium, tungsten, lead, vanadium, tin, tantalum, niobium, molybdenum, aluminum, cerium, bismuth, chromium, antimony, or titanium.
- 6. The composition of claim 1 wherein the substituted cobalt spinel contains a modifier metal oxide consisting of an oxide of zirconium, vanadium, or lead.
- 7. The composition of claim 1 wherein the substituted cobalt spinel contains a modifier metal oxide consisting of zirconium oxide.
- 8. Cobalt oxide spinel hypochlorite-decomposition catalyst compositions, said compositions consisting essentially of cobalt oxide spinels having at least a portion of the cobalt in the spinel crystal lattice replaced by at least a small proportion of at least one other metal,
- said other metal being at least one selected from Groups IA, IIA, and IIB of the Periodic Table,
- said spinel compositions being supported on a substrate or carrier of ceramic, glass, refractory, or mineral composition.
- 9. The composition of claim 8 wherein the substituted cobalt spinel contains a modifier metal oxide which consists essentially of an oxide of Zr, W, Pb, V, Sn, Ta, Nb, Mo, Al, Ce, Bi, Cr, Sb, or Ti.
- 10. The composition of claim 8 wherein the substituted cobalt spinel contains a modifier metal oxide selected from the group comprising an oxide of Zr, V, or Pb.
- 11. The composition of claim 8 wherein the substrate or carrier is a particulate or pellet form of ceramic aluminum silicate.
- 12. A composite hypochlorite-decomposition catalyst material, said composition consisting essentially of
- pellets or particles of ceramic, refractory, or inorganic mineral having applied as a coating thereon,
- a substituted cobalt oxide spinel wherein at least a portion of the cobalt in the spinel crystal lattice is replaced by a small proportion of at least one other metal of Groups IA, IIA, and IIB of the Periodic Table of The Elements.
- 13. The composite of claim 12 wherein, in addition to the substituted cobalt oxide spinel the said coating also contains a modifier metal oxide of the group comprising oxides of Zr, W, Pb, Sn, V, Ta, Nb, Mo, Al, Ce, Bi, Cr, Sb, and Ti.
