Claims
- 1. A process for optically brightening a synthetic or semi-synthetic high molecular weight organic material which comprises applying thereto an effective amount of a compound of the formula: ##STR57## in which R.sub.21 and R.sub.24, independently, are C.sub.2-4 alkenyl, --CN, --CONR'R", --COOR"', Rx--SO.sub.2 -- or Rx--CO--,
- R.sub.22, R.sub.23, R.sub.25 and R.sub.26, independently, are hydrogen or unsubstituted C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
- Rx signifies methyl; C.sub.2-6 alkyl, unsubstituted or mono-substituted by C.sub.1-4 alkoxy or C.sub.1-4 alkoxy-C.sub.2-6 alkoxy; phenyl, unsubstituted or substituted by up to three substituents selected from up to three selected from C.sub.1-3 alkyl and halogen and up to two from C.sub.1-3 -alkoxy; a radical ##STR58## or naphthyl, R' is hydrogen; methyl; C.sub.2-6 alkyl, unsubstituted or mono-substituted by hydroxy, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, C.sub.2-6 hydroxyalkoxy, or mono -or di-C.sub.1-4 alkylamino; cyclohexyl, unsubstituted or substituted by up to 3 C.sub.1-2 alkyls; phenyl, unsubstituted or substituted by up to three substituents selected from up to three selected from C.sub.1-3 alkyl and halogen and up to two from C.sub.1-3 alkoxy; or a radical ##STR59## R" is hydrogen; methyl; C.sub.2-6 alkyl, unsubstituted or mono-substituted by hydroxy, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy or C.sub.2-6 hydroxyalkoxy,
- R"' is M; methyl; C.sub.2-6 alkyl, unsubstituted or mono-substituted by hydroxy, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy-C.sub.2-6 -alkoxy or C.sub.2-6 hydroxyalkoxy; cyclohexyl, unsubstituted or substituted by up to 3 C.sub.1-2 alkyls; phenyl, unsubstituted or substituted by up to three substituents selected from up to three selected from C.sub.1-3 alkyl and halogen and up to two from C.sub.1-3 -alkoxy; or a radical ##STR60## n and p, independently, are 1 or 2, M is hydrogen or a non-chromophoric cation, and
- rings B and D, independently, are unsubstituted or substituted by up to three substituents selected from up to two from C.sub.1-3 alkyl and up to two from halogen.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 which comprises applying a compound of the formula: ##STR61## in which R.sub.31 and R.sub.34, independently, signify --CN, --COOR"' or --SO.sub.2 --Rx, and
- R.sub.33 and R.sub.36, independently, signify hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl.
- 3. A process according to claim 2 which comprises applying a compound of the formula ##STR62## wherein R.sub.41 and R.sub.44, independently, signify --CN, --COOR.sup.iv or --SO.sub.2 Rx.sup.iv, where R.sup.iv is methyl or C.sub.2-6 alkyl, unsubstituted or mono-substituted by hydroxy, C.sub.1-4 -alkoxy, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy-C.sub.2-6 alkoxy or C.sub.2-6 hydroxyalkoxy, Rx.sup.iv is unsubstituted C.sub.1-6 alkyl or phenyl, unsubstituted or mono-substituted by halogen C.sub.1-3 alkyl or C.sub.1-3 -alkoxy, and
- R.sub.43 and R.sub.46, independently, are hydrogen or methyl.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein, in the compound of formula I", Rx is methyl, C.sub.2-6 alkyl, unsubstituted or mono-substituted by C.sub.1-4 alkoxy or C.sub.1-4 alkoxy-C.sub.2-6 alkoxy; phenyl, unsubstituted or mono-substituted by halogen, C.sub.1-3 alkyl or C.sub.1-3 alkoxy; or naphthyl, R' and R", independently, are hydrogen, methyl, C.sub.2-4 alkyl, unsubstituted or mono-substituted by hydroxy and R"' is methyl or C.sub.2-6 alkyl unsubstituted or mono-substituted by hydroxy, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, C.sub.1-4 alkoxy-C.sub.2-6 alkoxy or C.sub.2-6 hydroxyalkoxy.
- 5. A process according to claim 4 wherein Rx is unsubstituted C.sub.1-6 alkyl or phenyl, unsubstituted or mono-substituted by chlorine or methyl, R' and R" have the same significance and R"' is unsubstituted C.sub.1-6 alkyl.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 wherein, in the compound of formula I", R.sub.21 and R.sub.24 are cyano.
- 7. A process according to claim 35 wherein, in the compound of formula I", R.sub.21 and R.sub.24 are --CO.sub.2 R"'.
- 8. A process according to claim 6 wherein the compound of formula I" is ##STR63##
- 9. A process according to claim 7 wherein the compound of formula I" is ##STR64##
- 10. A process according to claim 1 wherein the material is polyester, polyamide, polyurethane, polypropylene, cellulose ester or polyacrylonitrile.
- 11. A process according to claim 10 wherein the compound of formula I" is applied by exhaust, steeping or padding from an aqueous bath which may also contain a carrier, thickener or dispersing agent and said compound is fixed on the material using saturated steam, high temperature or the thermosol method.
- 12. A process according to claim 10 wherein the compound of formula I" is added to a melt or solution of the material to be brightened or by adding said compound to a monomer or prepolymer of the material.
- 13. A process according to claim 1 wherein the compound of formula I" is employed in an amount between 0.001 and 0.5% based on the weight of the material.
- 14. A process according to claim 1 wherein, in the compound of formula I", M is hydrogen, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cation or a cation of the formula R.sub.p R.sub.q R.sub.s NH wherein R.sub.p, R.sub.q and R.sub.s, independently, are hydrogen, unsubstituted C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.2-4 alkyl mono-substituted by hydroxy.
- 15. A process according to claim 2 wherein, in the compound of formula I'", M is hydrogen, an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal cation or a cation of the formula R.sub.p R.sub.q R.sub.s NH wherein R.sub.p, R.sub.q and R.sub.s, independently, are hydrogen, unsubstituted C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.2-4 alkyl mono-substituted by hydroxy.
