Claims
- 1. A process for preparing compounds of Formula IV comprising reacting enones of Formula II with acetonitrile derivatives of Formula III under basic conditions in the presence of a solvent at a temperature of 10.degree.-100.degree. C. for 0.1-18 hours and a pressure of 0.25-5 atmospheres as indicated in the Equations that follows: ##STR7## wherein: R.sup.1 is selected from the group C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl;
- R.sup.2 is selected from the group hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl optionally substituted with methoxy or 1-3 fluorine and C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkoxy optionally substituted with 1-3 fluorine;
- R.sup.3 is selected from the group C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl substituted with methoxy or 1-3 fluorine;
- R.sup.4 is selected from the group SO.sub.2 R.sup.5, CO.sub.2 R.sup.5 and C(O)N(R.sup.6).sub.2 ;
- R.sup.5 is selected from the group C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl optionally substituted with C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkoxy or 1-3 halogens independently selected from the group chlorine and fluorine;
- R.sup.6 is independently selected from the group hydrogen and C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl;
- M is selected from the group Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, NH.sub.4 or alkyl substituted ammonium; and
- n is 1 or 2.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the compound of Formula IV is treated with a protic acid in the presence of a solvent at a temperature of -10.degree.-90.degree. C. for 0.1-24 hours at 0.25 to 5 atmospheres to form a compound of Formula I as indicated in the following equation: ##STR8## wherein: R.sup.1 is selected from the group C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 alkyl;
- R.sup.2 is selected from the group hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl optionally substituted with methoxy or 1-3 fluorine and C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkoxy optionally substituted with 1-3 fluorine;
- R.sup.3 is selected from the group C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl substituted with methoxy or 1-3 fluorine;
- R.sup.4 is selected from the group SO.sub.2 R.sup.5, CO.sub.2 R.sub.5 and C(O)N(R.sup.6).sub.2 ;
- R.sup.5 is selected from the group C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl optionally substituted with C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 or 1-3 halogens independently selected from the group chlorine and fluorine;
- R.sup.6 is independently selected from the group hydrogen and C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkyl;
- M is selected from the group Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, NH.sub.4 and alkyl substituted NH.sub.4 ;
- n is 1 or 2; and
- X is selected from the group Br and OH.
- 3. A process for preparing the compound of Formula I ##STR9## comprising treating a compound of Formula IV ##STR10## R.sup.2 is selected from the group hydrogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl optionally substituted with methoxy or 1-3 fluorine and C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 alkoxy optionally substituted with 1-3 fluorine;
- R.sup.3 is selected from the group C.sub.1 -C.sub.3 alkyl optionally substituted with methoxy or 1-3 fluorine;
- R.sup.4 is selected from the group SO.sub.2 R.sup.5, CO.sub.2 R.sup.5 and C(O)N(R.sup.6).sub.2 ;
- M is selected from the group Li, Na, K, Mg, Ca, NH.sub.4 or alkyl substituted NH.sub.4 ;
- n is 1 or 2;
- with a protic acid in the presence of a solvent at a temperature of -10.degree.-90.degree. C. for 0.1-24 hours at 0.25 to 5 atmospheres pressure.
- 4. The process of claim 2 wherein R.sup.2 is hydrogen, R.sup.3 is CF.sub.3, R.sup.4 is CO.sub.2 CH.sub.3, M is K, n is 1, the solvent is toluene and the base is KOH.
- 5. The process of claim 3 wherein R.sup.2 is hydrogen, R.sup.3 is CF.sub.3, R.sup.4 is CO.sub.2 CH.sub.3, X is Br, the solvent is methylacetate and the acid is HBr.
- 6. The process of claim 3 wherein R.sup.2 is hydrogen, R.sup.3 is CF.sub.3, R.sup.4 is CO.sub.2 CH.sub.3, the solvent is water and the acid is HBr or HCl.
