Claims
- 1. A compound of the formula (I): ##STR130## wherein R.sup.1 is
- (a) --CO.sub.2 R.sup.4, ##STR131## wherein R.sup.4 is H, R.sub.6 is straight chain or branched C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, which can be optionally substituted with a substituent selected from the group consisting of aryl, wherein aryl is phenyl or naphthyl, optionally substituted with a substituent selected from the group consisting of (Cl, Br, I, F), C.sub.1-4 -alkyl, C.sub.1-4 -alkoxy, NO.sub.2, CF.sub.3, C.sub.1-4 -alkylthio, OH or NH.sub.2 ; and --O--C.sub.1-4 -alkyl, C.sub.3 -C.sub.7 -cycloalkyl, halo (Cl, Br, I, F), --OH, --NH.sub.2, --NH(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl), --N(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl).sub.2, --NH--SO.sub.2 R.sup.4, --COOR.sup.4, --SO.sub.2 NHR.sup.9 ;
- A is S(O)p, wherein p is 0 to 2;
- R.sup.7 is
- (a) C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkyl;
- (b) substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl in which one or two substituent(s) are selected from
- (1) halogen,
- (2) hydroxy,
- (3) C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkoxy,
- (4) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkoxycarbonyl,
- (5) C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylcarbonyloxy,
- (6) C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl,
- (7) aryl, as defined above,
- (8) di-substituted aryl, as defined above, in which the substituents are V and W, defined below
- (9) C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkyl-S(O)p,
- (10) C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl-S(O)p,
- (11) phenyl-S(O)p,
- (12) di-substituted phenyl-S(O)p in which the substituents are V and W,
- (13) oxo,
- (14) carboxy,
- (15) NR.sup.9 R.sup.10,
- (16) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkylaminocarbonyl,
- (17) di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl)aminocarbonyl,
- (18) cyano;
- (c) perfluoro-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, selected from CF.sub.3, CF.sub.3 CF.sub.2, CF.sub.3 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2, CF.sub.3 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 CF.sub.2 ;
- (d) C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 -alkenyl,
- (e) C.sub.2 -C.sub.10 -alkynyl,
- (f) C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl,
- (g) substituted C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl in which one or two substituent(s) are selected from:
- (1) halogen,
- (2) hydroxy,
- (3) C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkoxy,
- (4) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkoxycarbonyl,
- (5) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkylcarbonyloxy,
- (6) C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl,
- (7) aryl, as defined above,
- (8) di-substituted aryl, as defined above, in which the substituents are V and W,
- (9) C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkyl-S(O)p in which p is 0 to 2,
- (10) C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl-S(O)p,
- (11) phenyl-S(O)p,
- (12) di-substituted phenyl-S(O)p in which the substituents are V and W,
- (13) oxo,
- (14) carboxy,
- (15) NR.sup.9 R.sup.10,
- (16) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkylaminocarbonyl,
- (17) di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl)aminocarbonyl,
- (18) cyano,
- (19) C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylcarbonyl;
- (h) aryl, as defined above,
- (i) di-substituted aryl in which the substituents are V and W,
- (j) aryl-(CH.sub.2).sub.r -(B).sub.b -(CH.sub.2).sub.t --, wherein aryl is defined above,
- (k) substituted aryl-(CH.sub.2).sub.r -(B).sub.b -(CH.sub.2).sub.t -- in which the aryl group is defined above and di-substituted with V and W; wherein
- B is --C(O)----S--, --O--, --NR.sup.4, --NR.sup.4 C(O)--, or --C(O)NR.sup.4 ;
- b is 0 or 1;
- r and t are 0 to 2;
- R.sup.4 is defined above;
- V and W are each independently selected from;
- (a) H,
- (b) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkoxy,
- (c) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl,
- (d) hydroxy,
- (e) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl-S(O)p,
- (f) --CN,
- (g) --NO.sub.2,
- (h) --NR.sup.9 R.sup.10 ;
- (i) C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl-CONR.sup.9 R.sup.10,
- (j) --CO.sub.2 R.sup.9,
- (k) C.sup.1 -C.sup.5 -alkyl-carbonyl,
- (l) trifluoromethyl,
- (m) halogen,
- (n) hydroxy-C.sup.1 -C.sup.4 -alkyl,
- (o) C.sup.1 -C.sup.4 -alkyl-CO.sub.2 R.sup.9,
- (p) -1H-tetrazol-5-yl,
- (q) --NHSO.sub.2 CF.sub.3,
- (r) aryl as defined above,
- (s) --OCONR.sup.9 R.sup.10,
- (t) --NR.sup.4 CO.sub.2 R.sup.9,
- (u) --NR.sup.4 CONR.sup.9 R.sup.10,
- (v) --NR.sup.4 CON(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.2 Q where Q is O, S(O)p or NR.sup.9,
- (w) --OCON(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.2 Q where Q is as defined above;
- (x) --CONR.sup.9 R.sup.10 ;
- R.sup.9 is H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 alkyl, phenyl or benzyl;
- R.sup.10 is H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl; or
- R.sup.11 is H, C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, C.sub.2 -C.sub.4 -alkenyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, or --CH.sub.2 -C.sub.6 H.sub.4 R.sup.20 ;
- R.sup.20 is H, --NO.sub.2, --NH.sub.2, --OH or --OCH.sub.3 ;
- R.sup.9 and R.sup.19 together may be --(CH.sub.2).sub.m -- where m is 3-6;
- or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
- 2. A compound of claim 1 wherein:
- R.sup.1 is 1H-tetrazol-5-yl;
- R.sup.6 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl optionally substituted with a substituent selected from the group consisting of Cl, CF.sub.3, OH, --O--CH.sub.3, --OC.sub.2 H.sub.5, or phenyl;
- R.sup.7 is
- (a) C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkyl,
- (b) substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 alkyl in which one or two substituents are selected from;
- (1) hydroxy,
- (2) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkoxy,
- (3) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkoxycarbonyl,
- (4) C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkylcarbonyloxy,
- (5) C.sub.3 -C.sub.8 -cycloalkyl,
- (6) phenyl,
- (7) di-substituted phenyl in which the substituents are V and W,
- (8) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl-S(O)p,
- (9) phenyl-S(O)p,
- (10) di-substituted phenyl S(O)p in which the substituents are V and W,
- (11) oxo,
- (12) carboxy,
- (13) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkylaminocarbonyl,
- (14) di(C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl)aminocarbonyl;
- A is --S--, or --S(O)--
- V and W are independently selected from
- (a) hydrogen,
- (b) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkoxy,
- (c) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl,
- (d) hydroxy,
- (e) NR.sup.9 R.sup.10,
- (f) CO.sub.2 R.sup.9,
- (g) trifluoromethyl,
- (h) halogen,
- (i) hydroxy-C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl-,
- (j) -1H-tetrazol-5-yl,
- (k) --NHSO.sub.2 CF.sub.3,
- (l) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl-S(O)p-,
- (m) --CN,
- (n) --NO.sub.2,
- (o) C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl-CONR.sup.9 R.sup.10 m
- (p) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkylcarbonyl,
- (q) --CONR.sup.9 R.sup.10,
- (r) --COOH.
- 3. A compound of claim 1 wherein R.sup.6 is C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl.
- 4. A compound of claim 1 wherein
- R.sup.6 is n-butyl;
- R.sup.7 is substituted C.sub.1 -C.sub.10 -alkyl in which one or two substituents are selected from:
- (1) hydroxy,
- (2) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkoxy,
- (3) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkoxycarbonyl,
- (4) phenyl, which can be substituted by V or W,
- (5) carboxy,
- (6) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkylaminocarbonyl;
- V and W are selected from:
- (a) hydrogen,
- (b) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkyl,
- (c) C.sub.1 -C.sub.5 -alkoxy,
- (d) CO.sub.2 R.sup.9,
- (e) halogen,
- (f) hydroxy-C.sup.1 -C.sup.4 -alkyl-,
- (g) -1H-tetrazol-5-yl-,
- (h) --NHSO.sub.2 CH.sub.3,
- (i) --CN,
- (j) --NO.sub.2.
- 5. A compound of claim 1 selected from the group consisting of:
- (1) 3-Benzylthio-5-n-butyl-4-[(2'-carboxybiphenyl-4-yl)methyl]-4H-1,2,4-triazole;
- (2) 3-n-Butyl-4-[(2'-carboxybiphenyl-4-yl)methyl]-5-(4-nitrobenzylthio)-4H-1,2,4-triazole;
- (3) 3-n-Butyl-4-[(2'-carboxybiphenyl-4-yl)methyl]-5-(4-methoxybenzylthio)-4H-1,2,4-triazole;
- (4) 3-n-Butyl-4-[(2'-carboxybiphenyl-4-yl)methyl]-5-(4-chlorobenzylthio)-4H-1,2,4-triazole;
- (5) 3-n-Butyl-4-[(2'-carboxybiphenyl-4-yl)methyl]-5-(4-methylbenzylthio)-4H-1,2,4-triazole;

- (1) 3-n-Butyl-5-(4-chlorobenzylthio)-4-[(2'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-yl)methyl]-4H-1,2,4-triazole;
- (2) 3-n-Butyl-5-(4-chlorobenzylsulfinyl)-4-[[2'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-yl]methyl]-4H-1,2,4-triazole;
- (3) 3-n-Butyl-5-(4-nitrobenzylthio)-4-[[2'-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-yl]methyl]-4H-1,2,4-triazole;
- (4) 3-n-Butyl-5-(4-nitrobenzylsulfinyl)-4-[[2-(1H-tetrazol-5-yl)biphenyl-4-yl]methyl]-4H-1,2,4-triazole;

INTRODUCTION OF THE INVENTION
This is a division of application Ser. No. 07/503,352, filed Apr. 2, 1990, now abandoned which is a continuation-in-part of copending application Ser. No. 382,138 filed Jul. 19, 1989 now abandoned.
