Claims
- 1. A mixture of compounds defined according to the structure: ##STR287## produced according to the process comprising the steps, in sequential order of:
- (i) intimately admixing in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst or a protonic acid catalyst a mixture of methyl substituted bicyclopentadienes having the structures: ##STR288## with an alkanoic acid anhydride or an alkanoic acid at a temperature of from about 0.degree. C. up to about 50.degree. C. and a concentration of acid catalyst of from 0.01 mole percent up to 1 mole percent based on the weight of reaction mass whereby a product containing a major proportion of esters is formed;
- (ii) hydrolyzing the resulting product containing a major proportion of esters with a hydrolysis reagent whereby a mixture containing a major proportion of alcohols is formed, said hydrolysis being carried out using as a hydrolysis reagent from 10 up to 50% by weight alkali metal hydroxide; the mole ratio of alkali metal hydroxide:mixture of ester derivatives being from 1 up to 2 moles of alkali metal hydroxide per mole of ester at a temperature of from about 40.degree. C. up to about 120.degree. C.; and then
- (iii) oxidizing the resulting mixture of alcohols with an oxidation reagent selected from the group consisting of sodium dichromate, Jones reagent, chromium trioxide, copper chromite, and pyridinium chloro chromate at a temperature in the range of from 20.degree. C. up to 220.degree. C. according to the reaction: ##STR289##
- 2. The product of claim 1 wherein in the process the oxidation reagent used is copper chromite and the temperature of reaction is 180.degree.-220.degree. C. at atmospheric pressure.
- 3. The product of claim 1 wherein in the process for preparing said product the oxidation reagent is sodium dichromate, Jones reagent or chromium trioxide and the reaction temperature is in the range of from about 20.degree. up to about 80.degree. C.; and the reaction is carried out in the presence of a solvent selected from the group consisting of toluene and methylene dichloride.
- 4. The product of claim 1 wherein in the process, the oxidation reagent is pyridinium chloro chromate and the reaction temperature is in the range of between about 25.degree. C. and about 100.degree. C.
