Claims
- 1. A material which prevents the transmission of high intensity light at a wavelength between about 482 to about 556 nanometers, said material carrying an amount of a substituted xanthene compound effective to prevent said transmission at a wavelength of between about 482 to about 556 nanometers, wherein the substituted xanthene compound is of the formula: ##STR46## wherein R.sub.1 -R.sub.6 are each independently alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, halogen, haloalkyl, SO.sub.2 N(alkyl).sub.2, aryl, substituted aryl, or hydrogen;
- Y.sub.1 and Y.sub.2 are each independently alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, or hydrogen;
- X.sub.1, X.sub.2, X.sub.3, and X.sub.4 are each independently selected from the group consisting of halogen, haloalkyl, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, NO.sub.2, SO, SO.sub.2 N(alkyl).sub.2 and SO.sub.2 groups; and
- Z is a substituted phenyl carrying a group selected from the group consisting of SO.sub.3, SO.sub.2 N(alkyl).sub.2, CO.sub.2, and CO.sub.2 CH.sub.3,
- whereby at least two of the R.sub.1 -R.sub.6 moieties are not hydrogen and R.sub.3 or R.sub.4 can optionally form a phenyl ring with R.sub.5 or R.sub.1 or R.sub.2 can optionally form a phenyl ring with R.sub.6.
- 2. A material which prevents the transmission of high intensity light at a wavelength between about 482 to about 556 nanometers, said material carrying an effective amount of a substituted xanthene compound effective to prevent said transmission at a wavelength of between about 482 to about 556 nanometers, wherein the wavelength is 532 and the substituted xanthene compound is of the formula: ##STR47##
- 3. A material as claimed in claim 1 wherein R.sub.1 -R.sub.4 are each independently lower alkyl groups.
- 4. A material as claimed in claim 3 wherein the lower alkyl groups are methyl, ethyl, or propyl.
- 5. A material as claimed in claim 3 wherein the lower alkyl group is methyl.
- 6. A material as claimed in 5 wherein X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 are chlorine.
- 7. A material as claimed in claim 1 wherein Z is a substituted phenyl having the formula ##STR48## wherein A is selected from the group consisting of SO.sub.3, SO.sub.2 N(alkyl).sub.2, CO.sub.2 and CO.sub.2 CH.sub.3.
- 8. A material as claimed in claim 1 wherein the R and X groups are positioned such that the compound is optically symmetrical.
- 9. A material as claimed in claim 8 wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are located in the 2 and 6 positions of the phenyl rings.
- 10. A material as claimed in claim 8 wherein R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are located in the 3 and 5 positions of the phenyl rings.
- 11. A material as claimed in claim 8 or 10 wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 are homologous and R.sub.2 and R.sub.4 are homologous.
- 12. A material as claimed in claim 11 wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 are the same and R.sub.2 and R.sub.4 are the same.
- 13. A material as claimed in claim 1 wherein X.sub.1 and X.sub.2 are C1; R.sub.1, R.sub.2, R.sub.3, and R.sub.4 are each methyl groups; Z is ##STR49## and the remaining R, X, and Y moieties are hydrogen.
- 14. A material as claimed in claim 1 further comprising a solubilizer.
- 15. A material as claimed in claim 14 further comprising phosphotungstic or phosphomolybdic acid.
- 16. A material as claimed in claim 15 wherein the solubilizer is a surface active quaternary ammonium compound.
- 17. A material as claimed in claim 1 wherein said material is formed in a shield and said shield is a component used to protect a person from high intensity light.
- 18. A material as claimed in claim 17 wherein the material is formed into lenses for protective goggles or glasses.
