Claims
- 1. A 2:1 metal complex of the formula ##STR50## wherein each A is independently ##STR51## each R.sub.1 and the ##STR52## radical to which it is attached, taken together, independently, are ##STR53## each R.sub.3 is independently C.sub.1-4 alkyl, or each A, R.sub.3 and the ##STR54## radical to which they are attached, taken together, independently, are ##STR55## each R.sub.1 and the ##STR56## radical to which it is attached, taken together, independently, are the radical of an aromatic carbocyclic or heterocyclic coupling component,
- wherein each
- R.sub.21 is independently chloro, bromo, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 alkoxy,
- p is 0, 1 or 2,
- p' is 0 or 1,
- the * denotes the carbon atom attached to the --N.dbd.N-- radical, and
- the ** denotes the carbon atom attached to X,
- X is a direct bond or a bridging radical,
- each
- Y is independently a direct bond, C.sub.1-4 alkylene, --CO--NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --***, --NH--CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --*** or --SO.sub.2 --NR.sub.4 --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --***,
- wherein
- R.sub.4 is hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
- m is 1, 2, 3 or 4, and
- the *** denotes the carbon atom attached to Z,
- each
- Z is independently ##STR57## wherein A.sup..crclbar. is a non-chromophoric anion,
- m is 1, 2, 3 or 4, and
- p is 0, 1 or 2,
- each
- Me is independently copper, cobalt, iron, nickel, manganese or zinc, and
- n is at least 2,
- with the proviso that the 2:1 metal complex is free of sulfo groups.
- 2. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 1 wherein X is a direct bond, straight or branched C.sub.1-4 alkylene, ##STR58## wherein each R.sub.4 is independently hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkyl,
- R.sub.5 is chloro, bromo, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 alkoxy,
- R.sub.6 is chloro, bromo, --NH--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or --N(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH).sub.2,
- R.sub.7 is straight or branched C.sub.1-4 alkylene, and
- each
- m is independently 1, 2, 3 or 4.
- 3. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 2 wherein n is 2-8.
- 4. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 3 wherein X is a direct bond, ##STR59## wherein R.sub.5a is chloro, methyl or methoxy, and
- R.sub.6a is chloro, --NH--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or --N(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH).sub.2.
- 5. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 4 wherein X is a direct bond, ##STR60## wherein R.sub.6a is chloro, --NH--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or --N(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH).sub.2.
- 6. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 3 wherein the two parts of the molecule attached to X are identical.
- 7. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 3 wherein each Me is copper.
- 8. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 3 having the formula ##STR61## wherein each R.sub.8 is independently hydrogen, methyl or 2-hydroxyethyl,

- R.sub.21 is independently chloro, bromo, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 alkoxy,
- X.sub.a is a direct bond, ##STR62## wherein R.sub.5a is chloro, methyl or methoxy, and R.sub.6a is chloro, --NH--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or --N(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH).sub.2,

- Me is independently copper, cobalt, iron, nickel, manganese or zinc,

- A.sup..crclbar. is independently a non-chromophoric anion,
- each
- p is independently 0, 1 or 2, and
- each
- p' is independently 0 or 1.
- 9. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 3 having the formula ##STR63## wherein each R.sub.21 is independently chloro, bromo, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, X.sub.a is a direct bond, ##STR64## wherein R.sub.5a is chloro, methyl or methoxy, and
- R.sub.6a is chloro, --NH--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or --N(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH).sub.2, each Z is independently ##STR65## wherein A.sup..crclbar. is a non-chromophoric anion,
- m is 1, 2, 3 or 4, and
- p is 0, 1 or 2, and
- each
- Me is independently copper, cobalt, iron, nickel, manganese or zinc,
- each
- m is independently 1, 2, 3 or 4, and
- each
- p' is independently 0 or 1.
- 10. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 3 having the formula ##STR66## wherein each R.sub.9 is independently hydrogen or C.sub.1-4 alkoxy,

- R.sub.21 is independently chloro, bromo, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 alkoxy,
- X.sub.a is a direct bond, ##STR67## wherein R.sub.5a is chloro, methyl or methoxy, and
- R.sub.6a is chloro, --NH--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or --N(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH).sub.2,

- Y' is independently a direct bond, --CH.sub.2 --, --CO--NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --***, --NH--CO--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --*** or --SO.sub.2 --NR.sub.4 --(CH.sub.2).sub.m --***,

- 11. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 10 wherein Y' is --CH.sub.2 --, --CO--NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.m' --***, --NH--CO--CH.sub.2 --*** or --SO.sub.2 --NH--(CH.sub.2).sub.m' ***, wherein m' is 2 or 3, and the *** denotes the carbon atom attached to Z.
- 12. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 11 wherein each R.sub.9 is independently hydrogen or methoxy,

- Me is copper,

- p' is 0, and
- each
- p" is 0.
- 13. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 12 having the formula ##STR69## wherein X.sub.b is a direct bond, ##STR70## wherein R.sub.6a is chloro, --NH--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or --N(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH).sub.2,

- 14. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 13 wherein each Z'--Y'"-- group is in the 4-position or each is in the 5-position.
- 15. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 14 wherein each Z' is ##STR72## wherein A.sup..crclbar. is a non-chromophoric anion, and
- p' is 0 or 1.
- 16. A 2:1 metal complex according to claim 3 having the formula ##STR73## wherein each R.sub.21 is independently chloro, bromo, C.sub.1-4 alkyl or C.sub.1-4 alkoxy, X.sub.a is a direct bond, ##STR74## wherein R.sub.5a is chloro, methyl or methoxy, and
- R.sub.6a is chloro, --NH--CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH or --N(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 OH).sub.2,

- wherein m' is 2 or 3, and
- the *** denotes the carbon atom attached to Z, each Z is ##STR77## wherein A.sup..crclbar. is a non-chromophoric anion, and
