Claims
- 1. Process for the production of an alternating elastomeric sulfur vulcanizable interpolymer of:
- (A) one or more C.sub.2 -C.sub.20 acyclic or alicyclic olefins having the general formula ##STR4## wherein R and R' are independently selected from the group consisting of halogen, hydrogen, straight and branched chain alkyl radicals, aryl, alkylaryl, arylalkyl and cycloalkyl radicals, plus:
- (B) about 50 mole percent of one or more C.sub.1 -C.sub.20 acyclic or alicyclic esters of acrylic acid wherein said acyclic or alicyclic ester radical moiety is free of olefinic unsaturation; and
- (C) a minor molar proportion, about 0.10 to 10 mole percent of the total monomers present in said interpolymers, of one or more C.sub.4 -C.sub.10 acyclic conjugated diolefins; said (A) and (B) components forming polymer segments interconnected by said (C) components and said (A) and (C) components comprising a total of about 50 mole percent which comprises:
- reacting said olefins, acrylic acid esters and conjugated diolefin monomers in a solvent with a catalyst system comprised of an organoaluminum Lewis acid, a vanadium compound and a free-radical generator at a temperature in the range of -100.degree. C. to 100.degree. C. for a period of time in the range of 2 minutes to 200 hours, and recovering the interpolymer, wherein the molar ratio of organoaluminum compound to vanadium compound is 3 to 30 mols of organoaluminum compound per mol of vanadium compound.
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein the Lewis acid is selected from the group of organoaluminum compounds having the general formula AIR.sub.m X.sub.n wherein R is a monovalent hydrocarbon radical selected from the group consisting of C.sub.1 to C.sub.12 alkyl, aryl, alkylaryl, arylalkyl, and cycloalkyl radicals, X is a halogen selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine and iodine, m is a member from 1 to 3 and the sum of m and n is equal to 3.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein the vanadium compound is selected from the group represented by the general formula VO.sub.z X.sub.t and wherein z has a value of zero to one, t has a value of two to four and X is independently selected from the group consisting of chlorine, bromine, iodine, acetyl acetonates, haloacetyl acetonates, alkoxides and haloalkoxides.
- 4. The process of claim 1 wherein the free-radical generator is selected from the group consisting of ultra-violet light, high-energy radiation and organic peroxides, hydroperoxides, peracids, peroxyesters and azo compounds.
