Claims
- 1. A sunscreen compound having the structure:
- X--Y--Z
- wherein
- (a) --X is a UVA-absorbing moiety selected from the group consisting of those having the structures: ##STR24## (b) --Z is a UVB-absorbing moiety having the structure: ##STR25## (c) --Y-- is a linking moiety having the structure:
- --(W.sup.1 (CR.sup.2.sub.2).sub.n).sub.m W.sup.2 --
- wherein, in the above structures, --W.sup.1 -- and --W.sup.2 -- are independently selected from the group consisting of a single bond, --O-- and --NR--; n is an integer from 1 to about 6; m is 1 or 2; each --R.sup.2 is independently selected from the group consisting of --H, --OH, and straight chain alkyl having from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms branched chain alkyl having from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms; --A is selected from the group consisting of --R, --OR, --NR.sub.2, and --SO.sub.3 H or its pharmaceutically-acceptable salt or ester; each --A.sup.2 is independently --OR or --NR.sub.2 ; --A.sup.3 is --H or --OH; --A.sup.4 and --A.sup.5 are, independently, --R or --OR, and wherein further either --A.sup.3 or --A.sup.4 must be --OH; --A.sup.6 is --H or --SO.sub.3 H or its pharmaceutically-acceptable salt or ester; and each --R is independently selected from the group consisting of --H, straight chain alkyl having from 1 to about 20 carbon atoms branched chain alkyl having from about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms, --(CH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O)pH, and --(CH.sub.2 CH(CH.sub.3)O)pH, wherein p is an integer from 1 to about 8.
- 2. The sunscreen compound of claim 1 wherein --NR.sub.2 is --NR.sup.1.sub.2, each R.sup.1 is independently straight or branched chain alkyl having from about 1 to about 20 carbon atoms, and --Y-- is selected from the group consisting of the following structures:
- --O(CH.sub.2).sub.n O--, wherein n is an integer from 1 to about 6;
- --NH(CH.sub.2).sub.n NH--, wherein n is an integer from 1 to about 6;
- --(OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.n O--, wherein n is 1 or 2;
- --(NHCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2).sub.n NH--, wherein n is 1 or 2; ##STR26## wherein n is 1 or 2; ##STR27## wherein n is 1 or 2; and ##STR28## wherein n is 1 or 2.
- 3. The sunscreen compound of claim 2 wherein --X has the structure: ##STR29## wherein --A is --R.
- 4. The sunscreen compound of claim 3 wherein --Y-- is --OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O--, and --A is --H.
- 5. The sunscreen compound of claim 2 wherein --X has the structure: ##STR30## wherein --A.sup.5 is --R, and either --A.sup.3 or --A.sup.4 is --H.
- 6. The sunscreen compound of claim 5 wherein --Y-- is --OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.2 O--, and --A.sup.5 is --H.
- 7. The sunscreen compound of claim 2 wherein --Y-- is --O(CH.sub.2).sub.n O--, n is an integer from 1 to about 6; --A.sup.2 is selected from the group consisting of --OCH.sub.3, --OCH.sub.2 CH.sub.3, --OH and --NR.sup.1.sub.2 ; and each --NR.sup.1.sub.2 has one R.sup.1 group being straight or branched alkyl having more than 2 carbon atoms and the other R.sup.1 group is methyl or ethyl.
- 8. The sunscreen compound of claim 3 wherein --Y-- is --O(CH.sub.2).sub.n O--, n is an integer from 1 to about 6; --A is --H; and --NR.sup.1.sub.2 has one R.sup.1 group being straight or branched alkyl having more than 2 carbon atoms and the other R.sup.1 group is methyl or ethyl.
- 9. The sunscreen compound of claim 5 wherein --Y-- is --O(CH.sub.2).sub.n O--, n is an integer from 1 to about 6; --A.sup.5 is --H; and --NR.sup.1.sub.2 has one R.sup.1 group being straight or branched alkyl having more than 2 carbon atoms and the other R.sup.1 group is methyl or ethyl.
- 10. The sunscreen compound of claim 1 selected from the group consisting of 4-N,N-dimethylaminobenzoic acid 4-ester of 2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzophenone; 4-methoxycinnamic acid 4-ester of 2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzophenone; 4-(2-methylpropoxy)cinnamic acid 4-ester of 2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzophenone; 4-N-decylaminobenzoic acid 4-ester of 2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzophenone; 4-N,N-butylmethylaminobenzoic acid 4-ester of 2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzophenone; 4-N,N-(2-ethylhexyl)methylaminobenzoic acid 4-ester of 2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzophenone; 4-N,N-butylmethylaminobenzoic acid ester of 4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)dibenzoylmethane; 4-N,N-(2-ethylhexyl)methylaminobenzoic acid ester of 4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)dibenzoylmethane; N,N-di-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-aminobenzoic acid ester of 2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzophenone; and N,N-di-(2-ethylhexyl)-4-aminobenzoic acid ester of 4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)dibenzoylmethane.
- 11. The sunscreen compound of claim 10 selected from the group consisting of 4-N,N-(2-ethylhexyl)methylaminobenzoic acid ester of 4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)dibenzoylmethane and 4-N,N-(2-ethylhexyl)methylaminobenzoic acid 4-ester of 2-hydroxy-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzophenone.
- 12. A sunscreen composition comprising:
- (a) a sunscreen compound or mixture of compounds of claim 1; and
- (b) a cosmetically-acceptable sunscreen carrier.
- 13. A sunscreen composition comprising:
- (a) a sunscreen compound or mixture of compounds of claim 3; and
- (b) a cosmetically-acceptable sunscreen carrier.
- 14. A sunscreen composition comprising:
- (a) a sunscreen compound or mixture of compounds of claim 5; and
- (b) a cosmetically-acceptable sunscreen carrier.
- 15. A sunscreen composition comprising:
- (a) a sunscreen compound or mixture of compounds of claim 10; and
- (b) a cosmetically-acceptable sunscreen carrier.
- 16. A sunscreen composition comprising:
- (a) a sunscreen compound or mixture of compounds of claim 11; and
- (b) a cosmetically-acceptable sunscreen carrier.
- 17. The sunscreen composition of any one of claims 12-16 wherein the composition comprises from about 1% to about 20% of the sunscreen compound or mixture of compounds.
- 18. A method for protecting the skin of humans or lower animals from UVA and UVB wavelength radiation, said method comprising topically applying to the skin of the human or lower animal an effective amount of a sunscreen composition of any one of claims 12-16.
