Claims
- 1. A sunshade for retractably and substantially covering a roof of an automotive vehicle, said sunshade comprising:
- a plurality of roof bows slidable proximate to an inside surface of said roof;
- said plurality of bows movable from a stowed position wherein at least one of said plurality of bows is straight, to a functional position wherein said at least one of said plurality of bows is curved in at least one plane; and
- a leading bow curved in a substantially horizontal manner when in said functional position;
- a first track having a channel extending in a fore and aft direction; and
- a second track having a channel extending in a fore and aft direction;
- each of said plurality of bows having ends positionable within said channels for slidable movement;
- said channels of said tracks being angled in relation to one another so as to cause said at least one of said plurality of bows to straighten and curve when moving from said stowed position to said functional position.
- 2. The sunshade of claim 1 further comprising:
- a flexible sheet spanning between said plurality of bows.
- 3. The sunshade of claim 2 further comprising:
- a roller mechanism attached to said flexible sheet, said flexible sheet being wrappable around said roller mechanism when said flexible sheet is in said stowed position.
- 4. The sunshade of claim 3 further comprising:
- a cable; and
- an actuator driving said cable in a first direction to move said plurality of bows and said flexible sheet from said stowed position to said functional position.
- 5. The sunshade of claim 4 wherein:
- said actuator alternately drives said cable in a reversible direction to rotate said roller mechanism thereby moving said plurality of bows and said flexible sheet from said functional position to said stowed position.
- 6. The sunshade of claim 5 wherein said roller mechanism includes:
- an inner shaft having ends;
- a pair of bearing surfaces journalling ends of said inner shaft for rotation;
- a gear coupled for rotation with said inner shaft, said cable rotating said gear;
- an outer tube coaxially surrounding said inner shaft, said flexible sheet attached to said outer tube; and
- a torsion spring coupling said outer tube to said inner shaft.
- 7. The sunshade of claim 3 wherein:
- at least one of said plurality of bows is positioned adjacent a circumference of said roller mechanism and oriented longitudinally when in said stowed position.
- 8. The sunshade of claim 1 wherein:
- said channels of said tracks each have an access slot for accepting said ends of said plurality of bows, each of said channels further have an abutting surface facing said access slot, and said abutting surfaces are angled toward each other so as to curve said at least one of said plurality of bows the ends of which slidably ride upon a cable movably adjacent to said abutting surfaces.
- 9. The sunshade of claim 1 further comprising:
- a cable movably running within said tracks for pulling at least one of said plurality of roof bows from said stowed position to said functional position.
- 10. The sunshade of claim 1 further comprising:
- a roller mechanism attached to a flexible sheet and oriented substantially perpendicular to said tracks.
- 11. The sunshade of claim 2 wherein:
- said roof is made from a substantially transparent material; and
- said flexible sheet covers a majority of said inside surface of said roof when in said functional position.
- 12. The sunshade of claim 1 further comprising:
- a sunroof having a movable transparent panel.
- 13. The sunshade of claim 1 wherein:
- said at least one of said plurality of bows curves in a substantially horizontal plane.
- 14. The sunshade of claim 1 wherein:
- said at least one of said plurality of bows curves in a substantially vertical plane.
- 15. A sunshade for use below an inside surface of a roof in an automotive vehicle, said sunshade comprising:
- a plurality of roof bows having ends with polymeric end fittings;
- a flexible sheet spanning between said plurality of bows, said flexible sheet having a trailing edge;
- first and second side rails on said vehicle;
- a first C-shaped channel longitudinally extending in a fore and aft direction, said first channel being disposed below said inside surface of said roof and inwardly opening toward a centerline of said vehicle, said first channel being located proximate said first side rail;
- a second C-shaped channel longitudinally extending in a fore and aft direction, said second channel being disposed below said inside surface of said roof and inwardly opening toward said centerline of said vehicle, said second channel being located proximate said second side rail;
- a third C-shaped channel longitudinally extending in a fore and aft direction disposed substantially below and adjacent said first channel;
- a cable longitudinally moving at least one of said plurality of roof bows;
- a roller mechanism axially disposed in a cross car manner substantially perpendicular to said channels, said trailing edge of said flexible sheet being affixed to said roller mechanism;
- each of said channels having a substantially parallel segment; and
- an electric motor operably driving said cable and causing rotation of said roller mechanism;
- wherein said roof is made from a substantially transparent material and said flexible sheet covers at least a majority of said inside surface of said roof when said material is in a functional position;
- said end fittings of said plurality of bows being engagable with at least said first and second channels such that said plurality of bows and said flexible sheet are slidable between a stowed position and said functional position.
- 16. The sunshade of claim 15 further comprising:
- a sunroof having a movable transparent panel.
- 17. The sunshade of claim 15 wherein said actuator includes:
- a fractional horsepower electric motor.
- 18. The sunshade of claim 15 wherein:
- at least one of said plurality of bows is flexed from a substantially straight attitude when in its stowed position to a curved attitude when in its functional position.
- 19. The sunshade of claim 15 wherein said flexible sheet is comprised of:
- an upper layer of material; and
- a lower layer of material;
- said plurality of bows being positioned in pockets formed between said upper and lower layers of material, said upper and lower layers of material being attached to each other.
- 20. The sunshade of claim 15 further comprising:
- a fourth channel and said second channel integrally formed as part of a track;
- a second set of bows having ends slidable in said third and fourth channels; and
- a second flexible sheet spanning between said second set of bows.
- 21. A method for operating a sunshade having a plurality of roof bows for substantially covering below a roof of an automotive vehicle, said method comprising:
- (a) moving said plurality of roof bows from a stowed position to a functional position;
- (b) curving at least one of said plurality of roof bows such that said at least one of said plurality of roof bows is curved when in said functional position;
- (c) moving said plurality of roof bows from said functional position to said stowed position;
- (d) straightening said at least one of said plurality of roof bows such that said at least one of said plurality of roof bows is straight when in said stowed position; and
- (e) moving a leading bow to said functional position whereat said leading bow has a substantially horizontal curve.
- 22. The method of claim 21 further comprising the steps of:
- (a) providing a first track having a channel extending in a fore and aft direction;
- (b) providing a second track having a channel extending in a fore and aft direction; and
- (c) sliding ends of said plurality of bows within said channels.
- 23. The method of claim 22 further comprising the step of angling said channels of said tracks in relation to one another thereby causing said at least one of said plurality of bows to straighten and curve when moving from said stowed position to said functional position.
- 24. The method of claim 21 further comprising:
- (a) rolling at least a majority of said plurality of bows around a roller mechanism when moving said plurality of bows from said functional position to said stowed position.
- 25. The method of claim 21 further comprising spanning a flexible sheet between said plurality of bows.
- 26. A sunshade for retractably and substantially covering adjacent a roof of an automotive vehicle, said sunshade comprising:
- a plurality of roof bows slidable proximate with an inside surface of said roof;
- said plurality of bows movable from a stowed position wherein at least one of said plurality of bows is straight, to a functional position wherein said at least one of said plurality of bows is curved in at least one plane;
- a flexible sheet spanning between said plurality of bows;
- a first cable coupled to at least one of said plurality of bows;
- a second cable;
- a direct current electric motor driving said first cable in a first direction to move said plurality of bows and said flexible sheet from said stowed position to said functional position;
- a roller mechanism including:
- (a) an inner shaft having ends;
- (b) a gear coupled for rotation with said inner shaft, said second cable enmeshing with and rotating said gear;
- (c) an outer tube coaxially surrounding said inner shaft, said flexible sheet being attached to and wrapping around said outer tube; and
- (d) a torsion spring coupling said outer tube to said inner shaft;
- said electric motor alternately driving said second cable in a second direction opposite said first direction to rotate said roller mechanism thereby moving said plurality of bows and said flexible sheet from said functional position to said.
- 27. A sunshade for use below an inside surface of an automotive vehicle roof, said sunshade comprising:
- a plurality of roof bows having ends;
- a flexible sheet spanning between said plurality of bows, said flexible sheet having a trailing edge;
- a first track longitudinally extending in a fore and aft direction, said first track being disposed below said inside surface of said roof, said first track having a plurality of longitudinally extending channels;
- a second track longitudinally extending in a fore and aft direction, said second track being disposed below said inside surface of said roof, said second track having a plurality of longitudinally extending channels;
- a roller mechanism axially disposed in a cross car manner substantially perpendicular to said tracks, said trailing edge of said flexible sheet being affixed to said roller mechanism;
- at least one of said channels having an access slot and an abutting surface slidably receiving said ends of said plurality of roof bows, said access slot having a flanged portion expanding toward said roller mechanism, outer and inner wall surfaces of said flanged portion being angled and expanded above and below a nominal portion of said access slot of said at least one channel, said flanged portion being located between said roller mechanism and said nominal portion; and
- an actuator supplying rotatable motion to said roller mechanism;
- said plurality of bows being engagable with said channels of said tracks such that said plurality of bows and said flexible sheet are slidable between a stowed position and a functional position.
- 28. A sunshade for use below an inside surface of an automotive vehicle roof, said sunshade comprising:
- a flexible rod serving as a leading roof bow;
- a plurality of trailing roof bows oriented substantially parallel to said leading bow;
- a flexible sheet spanning between said bows, said flexible sheet having an edge;
- a first track longitudinally extending in a fore and aft direction, said first track being disposed below said inside surface of said roof, said first track having a longitudinally extending channel;
- a second track longitudinally extending in a fore and aft direction, said second track being disposed below said inside surface of said roof, said second track having a longitudinally extending channel; and
- a roller mechanism axially disposed in a cross car manner, said edge of said flexible sheet being affixed to said roller mechanism;
- whereby said leading bow and said plurality of trailing bows are engagable with said channels of said tracks such that said bows and said flexible sheet are slidable between a stowed position and a functional position.
- 29. The sunshade of claim 28 further comprising polymeric end fittings disposed on ends of said rod, said end fittings riding in said channels.
- 30. The sunshade of claim 28 wherein said plurality of trailing bows are spring steel strips.
- 31. The sunshade of claim 28 wherein at least one of said bows is a glass fiber rod suitable for flexing in a horizontal direction and a vertical direction.
- 32. A sunshade for use below an inside surface of an automotive vehicle roof, said sunshade comprising:
- a plurality of roof bows;
- a flexible sheet spanning between said plurality of bows, said flexible sheet having an edge;
- a first track longitudinally extending in a fore and aft direction;
- a second track longitudinally extending in a fore and aft direction;
- a roller mechanism axially disposed in a cross car manner substantially perpendicular to said tracks, said edge of said flexible sheet being affixed to said roller mechanism; and
- an actuator remotely located substantially below a shelf and away from said tracks and roller mechanism, energization of said actuator causing said plurality of bows and said flexible sheet to move between a stowed position and a functional position, a majority of said flexible sheet being rolled around said roller mechanism in said stowed position adjacent to said roof.
- 33. The sunshade of claim 32 wherein said shelf is a package shelf of said automotive vehicle.
- 34. The sunshade of claim 33 wherein said actuator is a fractional horsepower direct current electric motor.
- 35. The sunshade of claim 33 further comprising a cable coupling said actuator to at least one of said plurality of bows, said actuator operatively pushing and pulling said cable.
- 36. The sunshade of claim 32 further comprising polymeric end fittings molded upon ends of said plurality of bows, each of said end fittings having a substantially rectangular cross sectional shape.
- 37. The sunshade of claim 32 wherein a hole is substantially vertically disposed within each of said ends of said plurality of bows.
- 38. The sunshade of claim 32 wherein each of said ends of said plurality of bows have a rounded top view shape.
- 39. The sunshade of claim 32 wherein said flexible sheet is a vinyl sheet having pockets for receiving said plurality of bows.
- 40. In combination, an automotive vehicle having an inside surface of a roof and a sunshade, said combination comprising:
- a plurality of roof bows, at least one of said plurality of roof bows being substantially flexible, all of said plurality of roof bows being located substantially below a plane of said roof in all positions of said plurality of roof bows, said plane being defined by a top surface of said roof;
- a flexible vinyl sheet spanning between said plurality of bows, said flexible sheet having an edge, a plurality of pockets in said sheet operably receiving said plurality of roof bows;
- a first track longitudinally extending in a fore and aft direction and being entirely disposed adjacent to said inside surface of said roof;
- a second track longitudinally extending in a fore and aft direction and being entirely disposed adjacent to said inside surface of said roof;
- a roller mechanism axially disposed adjacent to said roof in a cross car manner substantially perpendicular to said tracks, said edge of said flexible sheet being affixed to said roller mechanism;
- a fractional horsepower direct current electric motor located substantially below a package shelf of said automotive vehicle, energization of said motor causing said plurality of bows and said flexible sheet to move between a stowed position and a functional position, a majority of said flexible sheet being rolled around said roller mechanism in said stowed position; and
- a cable operably serving to move at least one of said plurality of bows, said motor operatively pushing and pulling said cable.
