Claims
- 1. A method for ordering and delivering supplies to assembly plants comprising:
dividing a facility into a plurality of staging areas; assigning each of said plurality of staging areas to each of a plurality of assembly plants; accepting incoming supply orders from each of said plurality of assembly plants; creating a plurality of outgoing supply orders, each of said outgoing supply orders comprising a delivery time, quantity, and staging area number, and being based upon production schedules for said assembly plants; transmitting said outgoing supply orders to a plurality of suppliers; receiving the supplies requested in the outgoing supply orders at said facility in accordance with said delivery times for said outgoing supply orders; unloading said supplies and transporting them to said staging areas in accordance with said delivery times and with said staging area numbers for said outgoing supply orders; and transporting said supplies from said staging areas to said plurality of assembly plants in accordance with said delivery times and with said staging areas assigned to said assembly plants.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein unloading said supplies and transporting them to said staging areas in accordance with said staging area numbers for said outgoing supply orders comprises unloading said supplies and transporting them to said staging areas in accordance with bar code labels on said supplies.
- 3. The method of claim 2 wherein said bar code labels identify said delivery time, said staging area number, and said assembly line location.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein said bar code labels further comprise an identifier for said facility.
- 5. The method of claim 2 wherein suppliers for said supplies label said supplies with said bar code labels.
- 6. The method of claim 1 wherein transporting supplies comprises transporting supplies with a transporter selected from the group consisting of trucks, vans, and railroad cars.
- 7. A system for delivering supplies to assembly plants, comprising:
a plurality of order entry computers for entering supply order requests for said assembly plants; an order consolidation computer for accepting and consolidating the supply order requests from said order entry computers; a communication link at the order consolidation computer for transmitting consolidated supply orders to supplier computers, said consolidated supply orders comprising a delivery time, quantity, and staging area number; a facility for receiving supplies requested in said consolidated supply orders, said facility divided into a plurality of staging areas wherein each staging area is assigned to an assembly plant and is identified by a staging area number; a supply label reader for locating delivery times and staging area numbers associated with said supplies requested in said consolidated supply orders and for staging said supplies in said staging areas in accordance with said delivery times and staging area numbers; and a transporter for transporting supplies from said staging areas to said assembly plants.
- 8. The system of claim 7 wherein said supply label reader is adapted to read bar code labels on said supplies.
- 9. The system of claim 8 wherein said bar code labels identify a delivery time, a staging area number, and an assembly line location.
- 10. The system of claim 9 wherein said bar code labels further comprise an identifier for said facility.
- 11. The system of claim 8 wherein suppliers for said supplies label said supplies with bar code labels.
- 12. The system of claim 7 wherein said transporter is selected from the group consisting of trucks, vans, and railroad cars.
- 13. The system of claim 7 wherein said order consolidation computer consolidates the incoming supply orders according to assembly plant production schedule timing requirements by determining when supplies are required at said assembly plants.
- 14. A method for ordering and delivering supplies to a plurality of assembly plants comprising:
accepting incoming supply orders from each of said plurality of assembly plants; consolidating said supply orders from each of said plurality of assembly plants in accordance with the time supplies are needed at each of said plurality of assembly plants based upon production schedules of said assembly plants; creating a plurality of outgoing supply orders, each of said outgoing supply orders comprising a delivery time determined in accordance with the time supplies are needed at each of said plurality of assembly plants based upon said production schedules of said assembly plants, transmitting said outgoing supply orders to a plurality of suppliers; labeling said supplies from said plurality of suppliers, each of said labels for said supplies comprising a delivery time; receiving said labeled supplies at a facility; unloading said labeled supplies and transporting them to a plurality of staging areas in accordance with said delivery times on said labels, each of said staging areas being assigned to one of said plurality of assembly plants; and transporting said supplies from said staging areas to said assigned assembly plants in accordance with said delivery times on said labels for said supplies.
- 15. The method of claim 14 wherein labeling said supplies comprising labeling said supplies with bar code labels.
- 16. The method of claim 15 wherein labeling said supplies with bar code labels comprises labeling said supplies with bar code labels at said suppliers.
- 17. The method of claim 14 wherein labeling said supplies further comprises labeling said supplies with assembly line location information.
- 18. The method of claim 17 wherein labeling said supplies with assembly line location information further comprises labeling said supplies with assembly line location information at said suppliers.
- 19. The method of 14 wherein labeling said supplies further comprises labeling said supplies with an identifier for said facility.
- 20. The method of claim 14 wherein transporting supplies comprises transporting supplies with a transporter selected from the group consisting of trucks, vans, and railroad cars.
