Claims
- 1. A system for changing the stiffness of a ski, said system comprising:
- a support member having a fixed end portion attachable to the ski and a free end portion movable longitudinally along the ski as the ski bends;
- a set of resilient finger members extending from the free end portion of the support member and being engageable in the direction of longitudinal movement to add stiffness to the ski against bending; and
- adjustable stop means attached to the ski and being fixed relative to the support member, said stop means having multiple stopping sections and means for moving said stop means for selectively presenting at least one or more stopping sections into the paths of said resilient finger members for engaging said finger members and controlling the stiffness of the ski.
- 2. A system according to claim 1 wherein at least some of said set of finger members have different degrees of resilience.
- 3. A system according to claim 1 wherein said set of finger members comprises a pair of generally parallel, longitudinally extending resilient finger members, and said adjustable stop means comprises a stopping section engageable with said pair of finger members to compress said finger members as the ski bends, to add intermediate stiffness to the ski.
- 4. A system according to claim 1 wherein said set of finger members comprises at least one finger member of a low stiffness against bending and at least one longitudinally extending finger member which is of high stiffness against bending, and said adjustable stop means comprises a stopping section engageable with said one finger member of higher stiffness to add high stiffness to the ski.
- 5. A system according to claim 1 wherein said set of finger members comprises at least one finger member of low stiffness against bending and at least two longitudinally extending finger members of high stiffness against bending, and said adjustable stop means comprises a stopping section engageable with said two finger members to add high stiffness to the ski.
- 6. A system according to claim 1 wherein said set of finger members comprises a first pair of longitudinally extending resilient finger members which are of higher stiffness against bending, and a second pair of longitudinally extending resilient finger members of lower stiffness against bending; and wherein said adjustable stop means comprises first stopping sections first engageable with said first pair of resilient finger members during a bending of the ski, and a second stopping section engageable with said second pair of resilient finger members during a later bending of the ski.
- 7. A system according to claim 1 wherein said adjustable stop means is adjustable to present a stopping section for juxtaposition with at least one of the finger members as the ski bends.
- 8. A system according to claim 1 wherein said adjustable stop means is adjustable to present a stopping section for engagement with at least one of the finger members as the ski bends.
- 9. A system according to claim 1 wherein said adjustable stop means comprises a cam disc rotatable on a fixed axis transverse to the ski, and said stopping sections are peripheral sections extending from the periphery of said cam disc, said cam disc being rotatable to selectively present peripheral sections to said finger members to cooperate with said finger members to change the stiffness of the ski as the ski bends.
- 10. A system according to claim 9 wherein part of the periphery of said cam disc has no peripheral section engageable with said finger members as the ski bends, to generally not change the stiffness of the ski as the ski bends.
- 11. A system according to claim 9 wherein said set of finger members comprises at least one finger member of higher stiffness against bending, and two resilient finger members of lower stiffness against bending, said latter two finger members extending forwardly when mounted on a ski, and said cam disc is rotatable to present a peripheral section extending rearwardly towards said two finger members, said peripheral section being juxtaposed with said two resilient finger members when the ski bends to add stiffness to the ski.
- 12. A system according to claim 9 wherein said set of finger members includes two second forwardly extending finger members of higher stiffness against bending, and wherein said cam disc is rotatable to present second rearwardly extending peripheral sections for engaging said second finger members to stiffen the ski against bending of the ski.
- 13. A system for changing the underfoot stiffness of a ski, said system comprising:
- a support assembly having a first end portion fixable to a ski, and a second, free end portion slidable over the ski as the ski bends, said free end portion having engagement means comprising a plurality of elongated resilient finger members projecting therefrom; and
- adjustable stop means comprising a cam disc fixable to the ski and pivotable about an axis, said cam disc containing a plurality of peripheral sections at least some of which having different pivot radii;
- said cam disc being pivotal so as to locate different said peripheral sections in juxtaposition to different said finger members, wherein the contact of said fingers with said peripheral sections limits the degree to which the free end portion can slide over the ski, and therefore, the rigidity of the ski.
- 14. A system according to claim 13 wherein said support assembly comprises an elongated main member and a slide member connected to, and movable over said main member to adjust said support assembly for different sizes of ski boots, said main member being fixable to a ski, and said slide member having said free end portion and said engagement means.
- 15. A system according to claim 14 wherein said slide member has a bearing yoke support on a base plate and fixable by fastener members to a ski for retaining said slide member therein.
- 16. A system according to claim 13 wherein said cam disc is fixable to the ski by a fastener member about which said cam disc can be pivoted to locate certain of said edge surfaces in juxtaposition to certain of said finger members.
- 17. A system according to claim 13 in which said engagement means comprises at least four finger members substantially parallel and adjacent, and said cam disc has at least three peripheral sections spaced apart around the periphery of said disc.
- 18. A system according to claim 17 in which said finger members are comprised of a resilient plastic.
- 19. A system according to claim 17 wherein said cam disc is pivotable to at least three operative positions, in one of which said finger members are spaced apart from said peripheral sections, none being contactable therewith; in another of which a first of said edge surfaces is substantially in contact with both a first and second of said finger members; and in still another of which said first and second of said peripheral sections are substantially in contact with a third and fourth of said finger members.
- 20. A system according to claim 19 in which in the second described position, the first peripheral section forces the first and second fingers to engage the third and fourth fingers, respectively, when the ski is bent sufficiently.
- 21. A system according to claim 15 in which said cam disc is provided with at least one detent recess adapted to engage at least one resilient detent lug extending from said base plate.
- 22. A support plate assembly for a safety ski binding, said plate assembly comprising:
- a support plate having an elongated main member and a slide member, said main member having a first end portion adaptable to be attached to a ski in a fixed manner, and a second end portion positioned over, and connected to said slide member by connecting means, said slide member having a free end and an opposite end portion operationally fixable to the ski, said slide member having a plurality of elongated resilient finger members projecting from the free end portion;
- a slide member bearing yoke fixable to said ski for retaining said slide member in a sliding relationship; and
- adjustable stop means comprising a cam disc pivotal about a vertical axis and having a plurality of peripheral sections engageable by said finger members, at least some of said peripheral sections having different pivot radii;
- said cam disc limiting the degree to which said slide member can slide through said slide member bearing yoke by engagement of said sections with said finger members.
- 23. A system according to claim 22 and further including a lever member attached to said cam disc for moving said disc to a desired position.
- 24. A system for changing the stiffness of a ski, said system comprising:
- a first member attachable to a ski, said first member having a fixed end fixable to a ski and a free end movable on the ski as the ski bends;
- a stop member operatively associated with said free end;
- first resilient means associated with said stop member and operatively engageable with said free end of said first member as the ski bends a predetermined amount; and
- second resilient means associated with said stop member and operatively engageable with said free end after engagement of said first member with said first resilient means and upon bending of the ski beyond said predetermined amount;
