Claims
- 1. A support post to be secured to a dental implant for supporting a prosthesis thereon, comprising:
- an implant-contacting region on the post including a unitary interface means secured to the post for abutting with said implant;
- a supragingival core section extending from the implant-contacting region adapted to extend above a gingival surface of a dental patient for supporting at least a prosthesis thereon, said interface means having material properties different from those from which said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section are made and adapted to extend upwardly from said implant and terminate at a point within a transgingival region below said gingival surface; and
- said supragingival core section is hollow with a passageway extending therethrough and said interface means extending completely along the bottom surface of said support post to prevent contact between the support post and an implant with which it is to be used.
- 2. The support post of claim 1, wherein said interface means further comprises an upper portion extending coaxially with said passageway.
- 3. The support post of claim 1, further comprising a shoulder portion extending centrally from an inner wall defining said passageway to provide a shoulder for the head of a screw for use in securing said support post to an implant.
- 4. The support post of claim 1, wherein said interface means is opaque to x-rays and said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section are transparent to x-rays.
- 5. A support post to be secured to a dental implant for supporting a prosthesis thereon, comprising:
- an implant-contacting region on the post including interface means attached to the post for abutting with said implant, said interface means being made of a material having a hardness no greater than that of the implant with which it is to be used;
- a supragingival core section extending from the implant-contacting region adapted to extend above a gingival surface of a dental patient for supporting at least a prosthesis thereon, said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section of said support post being made of a material having a greater hardness than the implant with which it is to be used, said interface means adapted to extend upwardly from said implant and terminate at a point within a transgingival region below said gingival surface; and
- said supragingival core section is hollow with a passageway extending therethrough and said interface means extending completely along the bottom surface of said support post to prevent contact between the support post and an implant with which it is to be used.
- 6. The support post of claim 5, wherein said interface means further comprises an upper portion extending coaxially with said passageway.
- 7. The support post of claim 5, further comprising a shoulder portion extending centrally from an inner wall defining said passageway to provide a shoulder for the head of a screw for use in securing said support post to an implant.
- 8. The support post of claim 5, wherein said interface means is opaque to x-rays.
- 9. The support post of claim 5, wherein said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section are transparent to x-rays.
- 10. The support post of claim 9, wherein said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section are made of ceramic material and said interface means is made of the same material as the implant with which it is to be used.
- 11. The support post of claim 10, wherein said interface means is made of at least one of titanium and a dilute alloy of titanium.
- 12. A support post to be secured to a dental implant for supporting a prosthesis thereon, comprising:
- an implant-contacting region on the post including interface means attached to the post for abutting with said implant, said interface means being opaque to x-rays;
- a supragingival core section extending from the implant-contacting region adapted to extend above a gingival surface of a dental patient for supporting at least a prosthesis thereon, said interface means having material properties different from said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section, said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section being transparent to x-rays, said interface means adapted to extend upwardly from said implant and terminate at a point within a transgingival region below said gingival surface; and
- said supragingival core section is hollow with a passageway extending therethrough and said interface means extending completely along the bottom surface of said support post to prevent contact between the support post and an implant with which it is to be used.
- 13. The support post of claim 12, wherein said interface means further comprises an upper portion extending coaxially with said passageway.
- 14. The support post of claim 12, further comprising a shoulder portion extending centrally from an inner wall defining said passageway to provide a shoulder for the head of a screw for use in securing said support post to an implant.
- 15. The support post of claim 12, wherein said interface means is made of the same material as the implant with which it is to be used.
- 16. The support post of claim 12, wherein said interface means is made of at least one of titanium and a dilute alloy of titanium.
- 17. The support post of claim 12, wherein said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section are made of ceramic material.
- 18. A support post to be secured to a dental implant for supporting a prosthesis thereon, comprising:
- an implant-contacting region on the post including a unitary interface means secured to the post for abutting with said implant;
- a supragingival core section extending from the implant-contacting region adapted to extend above a gingival surface of a dental patient for supporting at least a prosthesis thereon, said interface means having material properties different from those from which said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section are made and adapted to extend upwardly from said implant and terminate at a point within a transgingival region below said gingival surface; and
- said supragingival core section is hollow with a passageway extending therethrough and said interface means extending along the bottom surface of said support post to prevent contact between the support post and an implant with which it is to be used.
- 19. The support post of claim 18, wherein said interface means further comprises an upper portion extending coaxially with said passageway.
- 20. The support post of claim 18, further comprising a shoulder portion extending centrally from an inner wall defining said passageway to provide a shoulder for the head of a screw for use in securing said support post to an implant.
- 21. The support post of claim 18, wherein said interface means is opaque to x-rays and said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section are transparent to x-rays.
- 22. A support post to be secured to a dental implant for supporting a prosthesis thereon, comprising:
- an implant-contacting region on the post including interface means attached to the post for abutting with said implant, said interface means being made of a material having a hardness no greater than that of the implant with which it is to be used;
- a supragingival core section extending from the implant-contacting region adapted to extend above a gingival surface of a dental patient for supporting at least a prosthesis thereon, said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section of said support post being made of a material having a greater hardness than the implant with which it is to be used, said interface means adapted to extend upwardly from said implant and terminate at a point within a transgingival region below said gingival surface; and
- said supragingival core section is hollow with a passageway extending therethrough and said interface means extending along the bottom surface of said support post to prevent contact between the support post and an implant with which it is to be used.
- 23. The support post of claim 22, wherein said interface means further comprises an upper portion extending coaxially with said passageway.
- 24. The support post of claim 22, further comprising a shoulder portion extending centrally from an inner wall defining said passageway to provide a shoulder for the head of a screw for use in securing said support post to an implant.
- 25. The support post of claim 22, wherein said interface means is opaque to x-rays.
- 26. The support post of claim 22, wherein said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section are transparent to x-rays.
- 27. The support post of claim 26, wherein said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section are made of ceramic material and said interface means is made of the same material as the implant with which it is to be used.
- 28. The support post of claim 27, wherein said interface means is made of at least one of titanium and a dilute alloy of titanium.
- 29. A support post to be secured to a dental implant for supporting a prosthesis thereon, comprising:
- an implant-contacting region on the post including interface means attached to the post for abutting with said implant, said interface means being opaque to x-rays;
- a supragingival core section extending from the implant-contacting region adapted to extend above a gingival surface of a dental patient for supporting at least a prosthesis thereon, said interface means having material properties different from said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section, said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section being transparent to x-rays, said interface means adapted to extend upwardly from said implant and terminate at a point within a transgingival region below said gingival surface; and
- said supragingival core section is hollow with a passageway extending therethrough and said interface means extending along the bottom surface of said support post to prevent contact between the support post and an implant with which it is to be used.
- 30. The support post of claim 29, wherein said interface means further comprises an upper portion extending coaxially with said passageway.
- 31. The support post of claim 29, further comprising a shoulder portion extending centrally from an inner wall defining said passageway to provide a shoulder for the head of a screw for use in securing said support post to an implant.
- 32. The support post of claim 29, wherein said interface means is made of the same material as the implant with which it is to be used.
- 33. The support post of claim 29, wherein said interface means is made of at least one of titanium and a dilute alloy of titanium.
- 34. The support post of claim 29, wherein said implant-contacting region and supragingival core section are made of ceramic material.
