Claims
- 1. A supported molten metal catalyst in which a molten metal, which functions as a catalyst, is coated on the surface of a porous support said molten metal catalyst being selected so that it is molten under the reaction conditions of the process which it catalyzes wherein the molten metal is platinum.
- 2. The supported molten metal catalyst of claim 1 in which the molten metal is in the form of a thin film coating.
- 3. The supported molten metal catalyst of claim 1 in which the molten metal is in the form of microdroplets.
- 4. The supported molten metal catalyst of claim 1 in which the dispersed metal crystallites are selected from the transition metals vanadium, chromium, platinum, palladium, rhodium, nickel, silver, molybdenum, manganese, rhenium, iron, ruthenium, osmium, cobalt, and copper.
- 5. The supported molten metal catalyst of claim 1 in which the porous support is selected from the group consisting of MgO, CaO, Ca2SiO4, BaO, Ca3SiO5, ThO2, ZrO2, CeO2, Cr2O3, La2O3, Al2O3, TiO2, MgAl2O4, ZnCr2O4, ZnAl2O4, CaSiO3, and MgCr2O4.
- 6. The supported molten metal catalyst of claim 1 in which the support is not inert and itself possesses a catalytic function.
- 7. A supported molten metal catalyst comprising molten metal coated on the surface of a porous support and microcrystallites of solid metal or metal compounds dispersed in the molten metal wherein the molten metal is molten under the reaction conditions of the process which the catalyst catalyzes and wherein the molten metal is platinum.
