Claims
- 1. A process for polymerizing at least one olefin having from 2 to 18 carbon atoms which comprises contacting said olefin under polymerization conditions with a catalyst system which comprises
- (a) a catalyst prepared by the process comprising
- (1) co-comminuting an aluminum halide; at least one electron donor; a Group IVB-VIB transition metal compound; and a support base selected from the group consisting of the Group IIA and IIIA salts and the salts of the multivalent metals of the first transition series with the exception of copper to produce a coground solid;
- (2) extracting said coground solid with an organic liquid; and
- (3) separating the solid from the liquid under such conditions that at least 5 weight percent of the aluminum in the coground solid is removed characterized in that the extraction and the separation are conducted at a temperature below the boiling point of the lowest boiling portion of the organic liquid used in the extraction but in the range of about 70.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C.; and
- (b) an organometallic cocatalyst.
- 2. A process according to claim 1 wherein there is additionally present with said cocatalyst an organic electron donor.
- 3. A process according to claim 1 wherein said aluminum halide is aluminum trichloride and said support base is magnesium dichloride.
- 4. A process according to claim 1 wherein said transition metal compound is TiCl.sub.4.
- 5. A process according to claim 4 wherein the molar ratio of MgCl.sub.2 to AlCl.sub.3 is in the range of 8/0.5 to 3, the molar ratio of MgCl.sub.2 to electron donor is in the range of 8/0.5-3, and the molar ratio of the MgCl.sub.2 to the TiCl.sub.4 is in the range of 8/0.1-1.
- 6. A process according to claim 1 wherein said electron donor is selected from aromatic ethers and esters of aromatic acids.
- 7. A process according to claim 6 wherein said electron donor is selected from anisole and ethyl benzoate.
- 8. A process according to claim 7 wherein the molar ratio of MgCl.sub.2 to anisole is in the range of 8/1-1.5 and the molar ratio of MgCl.sub.2 to ethyl benzoate is in the range of 8/1-1.5.
- 9. A process according to claim 1 wherein said extraction organic liquid is a mixture of aromatic and paraffinic hydrocarbons.
- 10. A process according to claim 9 wherein said extraction organic liquid is a mixture of toluene and heptane.
- 11. A process according to claim 4 wherein the solid recovered from step (3) is contacted with additional TiCl.sub.4.
- 12. A process according to claim 1 wherein the extraction and the separation are conducted at a temperature in the range of 90.degree. C. to 100.degree. C.
- 13. A process according to claim 1 wherein propylene homopolymer is produced using a cocatalyst comprising organoaluminum compound and at least one electron donor.
- 14. A process according to claim 13 wherein said organoaluminum compound is triethyl aluminum.
- 15. A process according to claim 14 employing a cocatalyst comprising an ester selected from the group consisting of ethyl anisate, methyl p-anisate, methyl p-toluate, and ethyl benzoate.
- 16. A process according to claim 15 wherein said cocatalyst further comprises a hydrocarbyl trialkoxy silane.
- 17. A process according to claim 16 wherein said silane is phenyl triethoxy silane.
- 18. A process according to claim 17 wherein said ester is methyl p-toluate.
- 19. A process for polymerizing at least one olefin having from 2 to 18 carbon atoms which comprises contacting said olefin under polymerization conditions with a catalyst system whic comprises
- (a) a catalyst prepared by the process comprising
- (1) co-comminuting an aluminum halide; at least one electron donor; a Group IVB-VIB transition metal compound; and a support base selected from the group consisting of the Group IIA and IIIA salts and the salts of the multivalent metals of the first transition series with the exception of copper to produce a coground solid;
- (2) extracting said coground solid with an organic liquid consisting essentially of a mixture of toluene and heptane wherein the toluene is about 30 to 60 weight percent of said liquid; and
- (3) separating the solid from the liquid under such conditions that at least 5 weight percent of the aluminum in the coground solid is removed; and
- (b) an organometallic cocatalyst.
- 20. A process according to claim 19 wherein TiCl.sub.4 is included in the extraction liquid.
- 21. A process according to claim 19 wherein the extraction and separation are conducted under such conditions that at least 10 weight percent of the aluminum in the coground solid is removed.
- 22. A process according to claim 21 wherein the extraction and separation are conducted under such conditions that at least about 25 weight percent of the aluminum in the coground solid is removed.
- 23. A process according to claim 22 wherein the extraction and the separation are conducted at a temperature in the range of about 70.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C.
- 24. A process according to claim 22 wherein the extraction and the separation are conducted at a temperature in the range of about 90.degree. C. to about 100.degree. C.
