Claims
- 1. A surface-covering article, comprising:
a top layer made of a first type of resin; a bottom layer made of a second type of resin, the second type of resin of the bottom layer chemically bonding with the first type of resin of the top layer to join the bottom layer and the top layer; and a layer of reinforcing material disposed between the top layer and bottom layer to distribute a load force throughout the layer of reinforcing material when the load force is applied to the surface-covering article.
- 2. The surface covering article of claim 1, wherein the layer of reinforcing material is porous to allow bonding of the first type of resin of the top layer to the second type of resin of the bottom layer through the reinforcing material.
- 3. The surface-covering article of claim 1 wherein the reinforcing layer comprises fiberglass.
- 4. The surface-covering article of claim 1 wherein the reinforcing layer comprises a fine spun fiberglass.
- 5. The surface-covering article of claim 1 wherein the layer of reinforcing material comprises a decorative pattern.
- 6. The surface-covering article of claim 1 further comprising a layer of decorative material disposed between the top layer and the bottom layer.
- 7. The surface covering article of claim 6, wherein the layer of reinforcing material is porous to allow bonding of the first type of resin of the top layer to the second type of resin of the bottom layer through the decorative material.
- 8. The surface-covering article of claim 1 wherein the first type of resin and the second type of resin is selected from the group consisting of phenols, saturated polyesters, unsaturated polyesters, polymers, methylmethacrylates, acrylics, bisphenols, isophthatics, orthophthalics, terephalics, thrixotropics, non-thrixotropics, bisphenol fumerates, urethanes, thermoplastics, and epoxies.
- 9. The surface covering article of claim 1, wherein the first type of resin of the top layer and the second type of resin of the bottom layer are the same type of resin base.
- 10. A method of installing a surface-covering article on a substrate, comprising:
applying a first resin to the substrate surface; setting a surface-covering article capable of bonding with the first resin layer in the first resin layer; applying a second resin layer to a top surface of the surface-covering article; and curing the first resin layer and the second resin layer to encapsulate the surface-covering article between the first resin layer and the second resin layer and bond the first resin layer to the substrate surface.
- 11. The method of claim 10 wherein each of the first resin layer and the second resin layer is selected from the group consisting of phenols, saturated polyesters, unsaturated polyesters, polymers, methylmethacrylates, acrylics, bisphenols, isophthatics, orthophthalics, terephalics, thrixotropics, non-thrixotropics, bisphenol fumerates, urethanes, thermoplastics, and epoxies.
- 12. The method of claim 10 wherein the surface covering article comprises a top surface, a bottom surface, and a reinforcing layer disposed between the top surface and the bottom surface.
- 13. The method of claim 12 wherein the reinforcing layer comprises a fine spun fiberglass.
- 14. The method of claim 12 wherein the layer of reinforcing material comprises a decorative pattern.
- 15. The method of claim 12 wherein the surface-covering articles comprises a layer of decorative material disposed between the top layer and the bottom layer.
- 16. The method of claim 10 wherein the first resin layer and the second resin layer have the same type of resin base.
- 17. The method of claim 10 wherein the first resin layer and the second resin layer have a different type of resin base.
- 18. The method of claim 10 further comprising applying a resin layer to the substrate surface prior to applying the first resin layer when the substrate surface is not level.
- 19. A floor covering comprising:
a resin-based slurry layer disposed on the surface of a substrate; a surface-covering article set in the slurry layer; and a resin-based top coat applied to a top surface of the surface-covering article; the top coat boning with the slurry layer to encapsulate the surface-covering article between the slurry layer and the top coat.
- 20. The floor covering of claim 19 wherein the surface covering article comprises a top surface, a bottom surface, and a reinforcing layer disposed between the top surface and the bottom surface.
