Claims
- 1. A thermoplastic composition, comprising at least one thermoplastic polymer and a fire retardant filler comprising substantially amorphous sodium aluminocarbonate particles having a surface coating thereon, said surface coating comprising an organofunctional silane or an organofunctional titanate.
- 2. A thermoplastic composition as defined by claim 1, wherein the filler is included in an amount of at least about 10 weight percent.
- 3. A thermoplastic composition as defined by claim 2, wherein the filler is included in an amount of about 10 to about 70 weight percent.
- 4. A thermoplastic composition as defined by claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyolefins, polyamides, polyacrylates, polyvinylchlorides, polystyrenes, elastomers, and mixtures thereof.
- 5. A thermoplastic composition as defined by claim 4, comprising a polyolefin and sodium aluminocarbonate particles having a surface coating thereon comprising an organofunctional silane.
- 6. A thermoplastic composition as defined by claim 5, wherein said polyolefin is selected from the group consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, polybutylene, and mixtures thereof.
- 7. A thermoplastic composition as defined by claim 4, comprising a polyamide and sodium aluminocarbonate particles having a surface coating thereon comprising an organofunctional silane.
- 8. A thermoplastic composition as defined by claim 1, wherein the sodium aluminocarbonate comprises not more than about 10 percent crystalline structure.
- 9. A thermoplastic composition as defined by claim 1, wherein the sodium aluminocarbonate includes magnesium.
- 10. A thermoplastic composition as defined by claim 1, wherein the thermoplastic polymer is uncrosslinked.
- 11. A thermoset composition comprising at least one thermosetting resin and a fire retardant filler comprising substantially amorphous sodium aluminocarbonate particles having a surface coating thereon, said surface coating comprising an organofunctional silane or an organofunctional titanate.
- 12. A thermoset composition comprising at least one thermosetting resin and a fire retardant filler comprising substantially amorphous sodium aluminocarbonate particles having a surface coating thereon, said thermosetting resin being selected from the group consisting of methacrylate-based polyesters, epoxides, alkyds, and mixtures thereof, and said surface coating comprising an organofunctional silane or an organofunctional titanate.
- 13. A thermoset composition as defined by claim 12, wherein the filler is included in an amount of at least about 10 weight percent.
- 14. A thermoset composition as defined by claim 13, wherein the filler is included in an amount of about 10 to about 70 weight percent.
- 15. A thermoset composition as defined by claim 12, comprising a polyester and sodium aluminocarbonate particles having a surface coating thereon comprising an organofunctional silane.
- 16. A thermoset composition as defined by claim 12, wherein the sodium aluminocarbonate comprises not more than about 10 percent crystalline structure.
- 17. A thermoset composition as defined by claim 12, wherein the sodium aluminocarbonate includes magnesium.
