Claims
- 1. A device for counting particles on a sample surface, comprising:
a scanner having at least one opening for receiving particles from a sample surface; a particle counter for counting particles passed therethrough; a conduit having a first end connected to the scanner and a second end connected to the particle counter, wherein the conduit includes first and second tubes; the particle counter includes a pump for producing an airstream flowing from the scanner opening, through the first tube, through the particle counter, and back to the scanner via the second tube, for carrying the particles to the particle counter for quantitation; a sensor for measuring a rate of flow of the airstream; and a controller for controlling a speed of the pump in response to the measured rate of flow of the airstream to maintain the airstream at a constant flow rate while the particle counter quantitates the particles in the airstream.
- 2. The device of claim 1, further comprising:
a filter for filtering the airstream before the airstream flows back to the scanner.
- 3. The device of claim 2, wherein the particle counter further comprising:
a particle detector for counting the particles in the airstream coming from the scanner; a filter cartridge port through which the airstream flows after passing through the particle detector; and a filter cartridge removably connected to the filter cartridge port for capturing the particles from the airstream after being counted by the particle detector.
- 4. The device of claim 1, wherein the particle counter further comprises a rechargeable battery for powering the pump, the sensor and the controller.
- 5. The device of claim 1, wherein the particle counter further comprises:
a heat-sink for dissipating heat generated by the pump; and a circulating fan for normalizing air temperature inside the particle counter.
- 6. The device of claim 1, wherein the particle counter further comprises a touch sensitive display screen for displaying data and softkeys for operating the particle counter.
- 7. The device of claim 6, wherein the display screen includes a zoom mode in which selected displayed data is magnified.
- 8. The device of claim 1, wherein the controller provides different levels of password protected access for different sets of data.
- 9. The device of claim 1, wherein the particle counter further comprises a data port for remote access to data stored by the particle counter via at least one of an external computer and an external network.
- 10. A device for counting particles on a sample surface, comprising:
a scanner having at least one opening for receiving particles from a sample surface; a conduit having a first end connected to the scanner and a second end terminating in a first connector, wherein the conduit includes first and second tubes; a particle counter for counting particles passed therethrough, the particle counter including:
a port for receiving the first connector, and a pump for producing an airstream flowing from the scanner opening, through the first tube, through the particle counter, and back to the scanner via the second tube, for carrying the particles to the particle counter for quantitation; electronic indicia disposed in at least one of the first connector, the conduit and the scanner for identifying at least one characteristic of the scanner; and a controller for detecting the electronic indicia via the port and first connector, and for controlling the particle counter in response to the detected electronic indicia.
- 11. The device of claim 10, wherein the at least one characteristic includes a size of the scanner.
- 12. The device of claim 10, wherein the controller adjusts the speed of the pump in response to the detected electronic indicia.
- 13. The device of claim 10, wherein formulas used by the controller to calculate data analysis from the counted particles is varied in response to the detected electronic indicia.
- 14. The device of claim 10, wherein the first connector and port seal themselves when disconnected from each other.
- 15. The device of claim 10, further comprising a release button that unlatches the first connector from the port.
- 16. The device of claim 10, further comprising:
a purge filter for filtering airflow passed therethrough; a second conduit having a first end connected to the purge filter and a second end terminating in a second connector, wherein the conduit includes first and second tubes, and wherein the second connector is connectable to the port so that when the pump is activated, the purge filter filters contamination from the particle counter.
- 17. A device for counting particles on a sample surface, comprising:
a scanner having at least one opening for receiving particles from a sample surface; a particle counter for analyzing particles passed therethrough; a conduit having a first end connected to the scanner and a second end connected to the particle counter, wherein the conduit includes first and second tubes; the particle counter includes:
a pump for producing an airstream flowing from the scanner opening, through the first tube, through the particle counter, and back to the scanner via the second tube, for carrying the particles to the particle counter, a particle detector for counting the particles in the airstream coming from the scanner, a filter cartridge port through which the airstream flows after passing through the particle detector, and a filter cartridge removably connected to the filter cartridge port for capturing the particles in the airstream after being counted by the particle detector.
- 18. The device of claim 17, wherein the particle counter further comprising:
a filter for filtering the airstream before the airstream flows back to the scanner.
- 19. The device of claim 17, wherein the particle counter further comprising:
a sensor for detecting the presence of the filter cartridge in the filter cartridge port; and a controller for controlling the pump in response to the sensor.
- 20. The device of claim 19, wherein the particle counter further comprising:
a dummy cartridge removably connectable to the filter cartridge port for passing the airstream without filtration, wherein the sensor detects the presence of the dummy cartridge in the filter cartridge port.
- 21. The device of claim 17, wherein the filter cartridge port includes a sliding tray, and wherein the filter cartridge inserts into the tray.
- 22. The device of claim 21, wherein the tray includes a locking lever to secure the tray in place.
