- a plurality of spaced detents located on the distal edge of the periphery of said backup member and projecting radially outward from said backup member for securing said backup member to said anvil to prevent dislodgement of said backup member from said anvil.
- 2. The stapling instrument of claim 1, wherein:
- said anvil has a recess for receiving said plurality of detents to retain said backup member thereon.
- 3. The stapling instrument of claim 1, wherein:
- said anvil is annular in shape and has an inner annular groove formed therein; and
- said backup member comprises an annular washer mounted on said anvil adjacent to said groove; and
- said detents are formed on said washer and received in said groove to retain said washer on said anvil.
