- 8. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of placing a suture formed of a plastic material relative to body tissue includes placing a suture formed by a plurality of strands of plastic material relative to body tissue, said step of flowing the plastic material of the retainer around the plastic material of the suture includes flowing the plastic material of the retainer around and between the strands of the suture.
- 9. A method as set forth in claim 1 wherein said step of placing a suture formed of a plastic material relative to body tissue includes placing a suture having a transformation temperature range which is above 190° Celsius, said step of heating at least a portion of the retainer to a temperature in the transition temperature range of the plastic material of the retainer includes heating the portion of the retainer to a temperature which is below 190° Celsius.
- 10. A method of suturing body tissue, said method comprising the steps of placing a suture formed of a plastic material relative to the body tissue, inserting a portion of the suture into an opening in a retainer formed of a plastic material, heating at least a portion of the retainer, and, thereafter, bonding the plastic material of the retainer to the plastic material of the suture, said steps of heating at least a portion of the retainer and bonding the plastic material of the retainer to the plastic material of the suture being performed without significant deformation of the plastic material of the suture.
- 11. A method as set forth in claim 10 wherein an outer side surface area on a portion of the suture inserted into the opening in the retainer has a first configuration prior to and after performance of said steps of heating at least a portion of the retainer and bonding the plastic material of the retainer to the plastic material of the suture.
- 12. A method as set forth in claim 10 further including the step of flowing the plastic material of the retainer around the plastic material of the suture after heating at least a portion of the retainer.
- 13. A method as set forth in claim 10 wherein said step of inserting a portion of the suture into an opening in a retainer includes inserting a first portion of the suture into a first opening in the retainer, said method further including the step of inserting a second portion of the suture into a second opening in the retainer, said step of heating at least a portion of the retainer includes heating a portion of the retainer disposed between the first and second openings.
- 14. A method of suturing body tissue, said method comprising the steps of placing a suture formed of a plastic material relative to the body tissue, inserting a first portion of the suture into a first opening in a retainer formed of a plastic material, inserting a second portion of a suture into a second opening in the retainer, thereafter, heating a portion of the retainer disposed between the first and second openings in the retainer, and bonding the plastic material of the retainer to the suture.
- 15. A method as set forth in claim 14 wherein said step of heating a portion of the retainer disposed between the first and second openings in the retainer includes moving a heating element into a recess formed in the retainer at a location between the first and second openings in the retainer.
- 16. A method of suturing body tissue, said method comprising the steps of placing a suture relative to body tissue, inserting a portion of the suture into an opening in a retainer formed of a plastic material, heating a portion of the plastic material of the retainer, flowing the heated plastic material of the retainer around an outer side surface of the suture without flowing the material of the suture, and bonding the plastic material of the retainer to the suture.
