Claims
- 1. A handle for a surgical instrument comprising:
- a body defining a grip portion and including a ratchet formed thereon;
- a tool mounted on said body;
- a trigger arm pivotally mounted on said body and operatively connected to said tool;
- a bellcrank lever having a first arm and a second arm extending from a point of juncture with said first arm at an angle to said first arm, said bellcrank lever being pivotally mounted to said trigger arm at said point of juncture, said bellcrank lever being selectively pivotally moveable between a first position relative to said trigger arm and a second position relative to said trigger arm; and
- a trigger arm pawl pivotally connected to said first arm such that said first arm can pivot relative to said pawl, said pawl being moved into engagement with said ratchet when said bellcrank lever is in said first position so as to prevent relative movement between said trigger arm and said body, said pawl being moved to a position disengaged from said ratchet when said bellcrank lever is in said second position.
- 2. The handle defined in claim 1 wherein said toggle joint mechanism includes a first member pivotally connected to said pawl at a first end and pivotally connected to said bellcrank lever at a second end to form a toggle joint.
- 3. The handle defined in claim 1 wherein said trigger arm is pivotally movable between a first position and a second position relative to said body, said handle further including a spring urging said trigger arm toward said first position relative to said body.
- 4. A handle for a surgical instrument comprising:
- a body having a grip portion and including a ratchet formed thereon, said body defining a tool mount adapted to support a surgical tool on said body;
- an arm pivotally mounted on said body so as to be movable relative to said body between a first position relative to said body and a second position relative to said body, said arm defining a connection portion which adapts said arm to being selectively operatively connected to a surgical tool mounted on said body such that movement of said arm between said first position and said second position will operate the tool; and
- a locking mechanism including:
- a pawl moveably mounted on said arm, said pawl being selectively movable relative to said arm between an engaged position, wherein said pawl is moved into engagement with said ratchet to prevent relative movement between said arm and said body, and a disengaged position, wherein said pawl is disengaged from said ratchet; and
- a lever mounted on said arm, said lever having a first portion and a second portion, said lever being mechanically connected to said pawl such that movement of said first portion of said lever generally toward said grip portion moves said pawl toward one of said engaged position and said disengaged position, and movement of said second portion of said lever generally toward said grip portion moves said pawl toward the other one of said engaged position and said disengaged position.
- 5. The handle defined in claim 4, wherein said locking mechanism further includes a toggle arm having first and second ends, said first end being pivotally connected to said pawl, said second end being pivotally connected to said lever.
- 6. The handle defined in claim 4, wherein said arm defines a bore therein and said pawl is linearly slidably mounted within said bore in said arm.
- 7. The handle defined in claim 4, wherein said arm has a recess formed therein, a portion of said lever being disposed within said recess.
- 8. The handle defined in claim 4 further including a spring urging said arm toward said first position of said arm relative to said body.
- 9. The handle defined in claim 4, wherein said ratchet is defined as a surface formed on said body having a plurality of parallel teeth formed in said surface, said pawl having parallel teeth formed thereon which engage said teeth formed on said ratchet when said pawl is in said engaged position.
- 10. The handle defined in claim 4, wherein said lever is a bellcrank lever, said first portion of said lever forming a first lever arm, said second portion of said lever forming a second lever arm extending at an angle to said first lever arm at an intersection of said first and second lever arms, said lever being pivotally mounted to said arm at said intersection of said first and second arms.
- 11. A surgical instrument comprising:
- a handle including:
- a body including a ratchet formed thereon;
- a trigger arm pivotally mounted on said body; and
- a locking mechanism including:
- a pawl moveably mounted on said trigger arm, said pawl being selectively movable relative to said trigger arm between an engaged position, wherein said pawl is moved into engagement with said ratchet to prevent relative movement between said trigger arm and said body, and a disengaged position, wherein said pawl is disengaged from said ratchet; and
- a bellcrank lever having first and second arms formed at an angle to one another, said bellcrank lever being pivotally mounted on said trigger arm at a pivot point positioned at the intersection of said first and second arms, wherein pivotal movement of said bellcrank lever operatively moves said pawl between said engaged and disengaged positions;
- a shaft portion having first and second ends, said first end being attached to said handle, said shaft portion including:
- a hollow tube; and
- an actuating member disposed within said tube, said actuating member being attached to said trigger arm such that pivotal movement of said trigger arm relative to said handle moves said actuating member relative to said tube; and
- a tool attached to said second end of said shaft portion, said tool including a pair of mutually relatively movable portions selectively actuable by movement of said actuating member relative to said tube.
- 12. The surgical instrument defined in claim 11, wherein said locking mechanism further includes a toggle arm having first and second ends, said first end being pivotally connected to said pawl, said second end being pivotally connected to said first arm of said bellcrank lever.
- 13. The surgical instrument defined in claim 11, wherein said pawl is linearly slidably mounted within a bore formed in said trigger arm.
- 14. The surgical instrument defined in claim 11, wherein said body of said handle has a recess formed therein, a portion of said bellcrank lever being disposed positioned within said recess.
- 15. The surgical instrument defined in claim 11 further including a spring urging said trigger arm to a first position relative to said body.
- 16. The surgical instrument defined in claim 11, wherein said pawl has teeth formed thereon which engage teeth formed on said ratchet when said pawl is in said engaged position.
- 17. The surgical instrument defined in claim 11, further including a pair of yoke arms formed on said second end of said shaft, said pair of mutually relatively moveable portions of said tool including a pair of mutually relatively moveable jaws pivotally mounted on said yoke arms.
- 18. The surgical instrument defined in claim 17, wherein said tool further includes an electrical connector selectively connectable to a source of electrical power and an electrical contact fixed to one of said pair of jaws, said electrical contact being electrically connected to said electrical connector.
