Claims
- 1. Means for articulatably mounting a surgical component to a shaft, comprising flexible neck means, said flexible neck means comprising first and second longitudinal sections, each said longitudinal section having a plurality of teeth and kerfs therein, the teeth and kerfs of the first section being offset from the teeth and kerfs of the second section, whereby application of axial pressure to said sections resulting in forces acting in a direction normal to said longitudinal sections causing engagement of the teeth of the first longitudinal section with the kerfs of the second longitudinal section, thereby articulating said flexible neck means.
- 2. The means for articulatably mounting a surgical component of claim 1, wherein said means further comprises means for applying said axial pressure to said first and second longitudinal sections.
- 3. The means for articulatably mounting a surgical component to a shaft of claim 2, wherein said means for applying said axial pressure comprises a flexible tube slideably positioned about said flexible neck means.
- 4. The means for articulatably mounting a surgical component to a shaft of claim 3, wherein said offset teeth and kerfs are achieved by providing a first kerf angle to the teeth of the first longitudinal section and a second kerf angle to the teeth of the second longitudinal section, said first and second kerf angles being different from each other.
- 5. The means for articulatably mounting a surgical component to a shaft of claim 4, wherein said first kerf angle is about 30.degree., and wherein said second kerf angle is about 50.degree..
- 6. The means for articulatably mounting a surgical component to a shaft of claim 5, wherein said flexible neck means includes an axial channel therein for slideably receiving surgical actuation means therethrough.
