Claims
- 1. An articulatable surgical instrument having a handle with a shaft connected thereto, said shaft having a head assembly including a surgical component articulatably mounted to the distal end thereof via flexible neck means, said flexible neck means comprising a flexible material having at least one axial kerf therein enabling said flexible material to bend along said at least one kerf, said articulatable surgical instrument further including articulation means proximate said handle for remotely articulating said head assembly along one or more bend radii defined by said flexible neck means.
- 2. The articulatable surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said flexible neck includes a plurality of said kerfs and a plurality of ribs separating said kerfs.
- 3. The articulatable surgical instrument of claim 2, wherein said kerfs and ribs are equally spaced along said flexible neck means.
- 4. The articulatable surgical instrument of claim 2, wherein said kerfs comprise annular grooves in said flexible neck means.
- 5. The articulatable surgical instrument of claim 2, wherein said kerfs comprise herringbone-shaped grooves in said flexible neck means.
- 6. The articulatable surgical instrument of claim 2, wherein said kerfs and ribs are unequally spaced along said flexible neck means, thereby dictating the bend radii of said flexible neck means.
- 7. The articulatable surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said flexible material is selected from the consisting of polycarbonate, nylon, high density polyethylene, rubber, neoprene, polyester, polytetrafluoroethylene, polypropylene, polyetherimide, and polyvinyl chloride.
- 8. The articulatable surgical instrument of claim 1, wherein said articulation means comprises actuation means proximate said handle and force transfer means connecting said actuation means to said head assembly.
- 9. The articulatable surgical instrument of claim 8, wherein said force transfer means comprises at least one flexible member connected at a distal end to said head assembly at a point spaced from an axis of said head assembly.
- 10. The articulatable surgical instrument of claim 9, wherein said at least one flexible member is slideably received through said flexible neck means.
- 11. The articulatable surgical instrument of claim 10, wherein said at least one flexible member is selected from the group consisting of rods, bands, ribbons, straps, cables, chains, and wire.
- 12. The articulatable surgical instrument of claim 9, including two said flexible members, a first flexible member articulating said head assembly in a first direction, and a second flexible member articulating said head assembly in a second direction opposite said first direction.
- 13. The articulatable surgical instrument of claim 10, wherein said at least one flexible member comprises a ribbon fastened at a distal end to a proximal end of said head assembly, and fastened at a proximal end to a rigid pusher rod, said rigid pusher rod being fastened at a proximal end to said actuation means, said actuation means comprising means for pushing and pulling said pusher rod with respect to said shaft.
