Claims
- 1. A surgical retractor comprising:
a frame; first and second retractor blades coupled to the frame, the retractor blades having retraction surfaces configured to engage an incision in a patient's body, wherein the first and second retractor blades are relatively movable toward or away from each other along a first axis to position the blades closer or away from each other, and wherein at least one of the retractor blades is coupled to the frame so as to be rotatable with respect thereto about a second axis which is generally perpendicular to the first axis; a rotational locking mechanism for locking said at least one retractor blade against rotation with respect to the frame; a foot coupled to a component selected from the group consisting of the frame and the first and second retractor blades, the foot having a support surface configured to engage a surface of the patient's body adjacent the incision, wherein the foot is movable independently of relatively moving the retractor blades along the first axis; and an actuator for moving said at least one retractor blade away from the other retractor blade along the first axis.
- 2. The surgical retractor of claim 1, wherein the frame comprises a frame member and the first retractor blade is coupled to the frame member by a first arm, while the second retractor blade is coupled to the frame member by a second arm.
- 3. The surgical retractor of claim 2, wherein one of the first and second arms is fixed to the frame member while the other arm is movable with respect to the frame member along the first axis, and said at least one retractor blade is coupled to the movable arm.
- 4. The surgical retractor of claim 2, wherein the frame member comprises an elongated bar, the first arm comprises an inner portion coupled to the elongated bar and an outer portion coupled to the first retractor blade, and the second arm comprises an inner portion coupled to the elongated bar and an outer portion coupled to the second retractor blade.
- 5. The surgical retractor of claim 4, wherein the inner and outer portions of each of the first and second arms are joined by a hinge and are rotatable relative to each other about an axis generally parallel to said first axis.
- 6. The retractor of claim 2, wherein one of the first and second arms is coupled to a link member by a connection which permits the link member to rotate about the second axis with respect to said one arm, said at least one retractor blade being secured to the link member so as to rotate therewith.
- 7. The retractor of claim 6, wherein the link member is movable between two positions with respect to said one arm, one of the positions permitting and the other of the positions preventing rotation of the link member and said at least one retractor blade about the second axis.
- 8. The retractor of claim 6, wherein the foot is coupled to the link member adjacent said at least one retractor blade.
- 9. The retractor of claim 8, wherein the foot is attached to the link member by at least one member so that the foot is adjustable with respect to the link member.
- 10. The retractor of claim 9, wherein said at least one member has a connector element which detachably engages one of a plurality of mating connector elements provided on the foot.
- 11. The retractor of claim 9, further comprising a pawl and ratchet mechanism for preventing relative movement of the foot and the link member.
- 12. The retractor of claim 1, wherein the foot is adjustable with respect to the frame along a third axis which is generally perpendicular to the first and second axes.
- 13. The retractor of claim 12, wherein the foot comprises a plate having a convex exterior, the foot plate being rotatable with respect to the frame about the third axis.
- 14. The retractor of claim 13, wherein each of the first and second retractor blades is rotatable about an axis generally parallel to the third axis.
- 15. The retractor of claim 1, wherein one of the first and second retractor blades comprises a generally C-shaped blade element and the other retractor blade comprises a generally L-shaped blade element, the generally L-shaped blade element including a lifting surface for engaging the interior of one side of an incision.
- 16. The retractor of claim 15, wherein the first and second retractor blades each comprise a retraction surface divided by at least one indexing tab into a portion for engaging part of a patient's rib and a portion for engaging soft tissue located adjacent the rib.
- 17. The retractor of claim 1, wherein said at least one retractor blade is coupled to a link member which is coupled to an arm movably carried by the frame, and the rotational locking mechanism comprises two portions provided on the link member each of which is configured to engage the arm, one of said portions permitting and the other of said portions preventing the link member and said at least one retractor blade to rotate with respect to the arm and frame.
- 18. A surgical retractor comprising:
a frame member; first and second retractor blades coupled to the frame member, the retractor blades having retraction surfaces configured to engage an incision in a patient's body; the retractor blades being relatively movable with respect to the frame member toward or away from the each other along a first axis to position the retractor blades closer or away from each other; at least one of the retractor blades being rotatable about a second axis which is generally perpendicular to the first axis; a rotational locking mechanism for selectively locking said at least one retractor blade against rotation about the second axis; a foot coupled to the frame member, the foot having a support surface configured to engage a surface of a patient's body; and an actuator for imparting relative movement to the retractor blades along the first axis.
- 19. The surgical retractor of claim 20, wherein the foot is movable relative to the frame along a third axis which is transverse to the first axis.
- 20. A surgical retractor comprising:
a frame member; first and second retractor blades coupled to the frame member, the retractor blades having retraction surfaces configured to engage an incision in a patient's body, wherein one of the retractor blades is movable with respect to the frame member along a first axis to position the retractor blades closer or away from each other; a foot coupled to the frame member, the foot having a support surface configured to engage a surface of a patient's body, wherein the foot and the frame member are adjustable in a linear direction along an axis which is transverse to the first axis; a locking mechanism for locking the foot and the frame member in a selected relative position along said axis which is transverse to the first axis; and an actuator for moving said at least one retractor blade with respect to the other retractor blade along the first axis.
