Claims
- 1. A powered surgical handpiece comprising:
a housing having a distal end with an accessory opening dimensioned to receive the proximal end of a cutting accessory and a lock slot contiguous with the accessory opening dimensioned to receive a first lock tab that extends outwardly from the proximal end of the cutting accessory; a power generating unit disposed within said housing for actuating the cutting accessory, said power generating unit including a coupling member for transferring power generated by said power generating unit to the cutting accessory; a lock ring slidably fitted in the distal end of said housing so as to surround the accessory opening and the lock slot; a biasing member disposed between said housing and said lock ring for holding said lock ring in a locked state wherein a section of said lock ring is disposed in the handpiece lock slot; and a release button integral with said lock ring that is depressed to slide said lock ring from the locked state to a release state in which said lock ring is clear of the lock slot.
- 2. The powered surgical handpiece of claim 1, wherein:
said handpiece is formed with a groove that opens into the accessory opening, the groove intersecting the lock slot and being positioned to accommodate the section of said lock ring that is disposed in the lock slot, wherein the groove and the lock slot each have a depth, the depth of the groove being greater than the depth of the lock slot; and said lock ring and said handpiece are collectively dimensioned so that when said lock ring is slid to the release state, said lock ring seats in a portion of the groove below the lock slot.
- 3. The powered surgical handpiece of claim 1, wherein said handpiece is further formed to have an auxiliary slot separate from the lock slot that opens into the accessory opening for receiving a second lock tab that extends outwardly from the proximal end of the cutting accessory.
- 4. The powered surgical handpiece of claim 1, wherein said handpiece is further formed to have an auxiliary slot separate from the lock slot that opens into the accessory opening for receiving a second lock tab that extends outwardly from the proximal end of the cutting accessory; and
said lock ring is shaped to define an auxiliary indentation that at least partially subtends the area subtended by the handpiece auxiliary slot.
- 5. The powered surgical handpiece of claim 1, wherein:
said biasing member extends between a surface of said housing and said lock ring or said release button so as to bias said lock ring and said housing so that the release button is urged away from said housing; and a cover plate is fitted over said lock ring and secured to said housing to hold said lock ring to said housing.
- 6. The powered surgical handpiece of claim 1, wherein:
said housing includes a body and a collet that is attached to an end of said body to form the distal end of said housing, said collet being formed to define the accessory opening and the lock slot; and said lock ring is slidably secured to said collet and said biasing member extends between said collet and said lock ring.
- 7. The powered surgical handpiece of claim 1, wherein said power generating unit is a motor, said motor having an output shaft that extends into the opening and the power generating unit coupling member is integral with said output shaft.
- 8. A powered surgical tool comprising:
a handpiece, said handpiece having a distal end and an accessory opening that extends inwardly from the distal end that is dimensioned to receive an outer hub of a cutting accessory; a motor disposed in said handpiece body, said motor having a rotating output shaft and a coupling member attached to said output shaft for releasably coupling a drive hub of the cutting accessory to said output shaft so that said output shaft and said drive hub rotate in unison; a coupling assembly attached to said handpiece body for releasably holding the cutting accessory outer hub to said handpiece body, said coupling assembly comprising:
a handpiece being formed to define a lock slot that extends longitudinally inwardly from the distal end that is contiguous with the accessory opening, the lock slot being dimensioned to receive a first lock tab that extends from an outer surface of the cutting accessory out hub; a lock ring mounted to said handpiece, said lock ring positioned to surround the accessory opening and the lock slot, said lock ring being slidably mounted to said handpiece and positioned to selectively intersect the lock slot; a biasing member disposed between said handpiece and said lock ring for urging said lock ring into a locked state in which a section of said lock ring intersects the lock slot; and a release button integral with said lock ring that is depressed to slide said lock ring from the locked state to a release state wherein said lock ring is spaced from the lock slot.
- 9. The powered surgical tool of claim 8, wherein:
said handpiece is formed with a groove that opens into the accessory opening, the groove being positioned to intersect the lock slot, wherein the groove and the lock slot each have a depth, the depth of the groove being greater than the depth of the lock slot; and said lock ring and said handpiece are collectively dimensioned so that when said lock ring is slid to the release state, said lock ring seats in a portion of the groove below the lock slot.
- 10. The powered surgical tool of claim 8, wherein:
said handpiece is further formed to have an auxiliary slot separate from the lock slot that opens into the accessory opening for receiving a second lock tab that extends outwardly from the cutting accessory outer hub; and said lock ring is shaped to define an auxiliary indentation that at least partially subtends the area subtended by the handpiece auxiliary slot.
- 11. The powered surgical tool of claim 8, wherein said coupling assembly is formed so that said lock slot and said release button are located opposite each other.
- 12. The powered surgical tool of claim 8, wherein:
said handpiece includes a housing and a collet that is attached to an end of said housing to form the distal end of said housing, said collet being formed to define a distal section of the accessory opening and the lock slot; and said lock ring is slidably secured to said collet and said biasing member extends between said collet and said lock ring.
- 13. The powered surgical handpiece of claim 12, wherein:
said collet is formed to define: a base that is disposed in said housing, a head that extends forward from said base, said head being the distal end of said housing; and a skirt that extends rearwardly from said head that surrounds said base and is spaced away from said housing so as to define an annular space around said base, said skirt being located within said housing; and a coil is disposed in said body within the annular space defined by said base and said skirt of said housing.
- 14. A cutting accessory, said cutting accessory comprising:
a drive hub, said drive hub formed with at least one geometric feature for causing said drive hub to engage an output shaft of a handpiece motor; a drive shaft that extends forward from said drive hub; an outer hub, said outer hub being disposed over said drive hub and having: a base dimensioned to be fitted into a complementary handpiece opening, said base having an open proximal end in which at least a portion of said drive hub is located, a circumferentially extending outer surface, and a head integral and located forward of said base, said head being shaped to define a bore through which said drive shaft extends; a lock tab integral with said base that extends outwardly from the outer surface of said outer hub base, said lock tab shaped to have a distal facing surface located adjacent said outer hub and a side surface that extends from a position adjacent the proximal end of said base to the distal facing surface, the side surface being tapered such that the depth of said lock tab increases along the side surface from the position adjacent the proximal end of said base towards the distal-facing surface; and an outer housing that extends forward from said outer hub head and at least partially surrounds said drive shaft.
- 15. The cutting accessory of claim 14, wherein said lock tab is further formed to have a proximal facing surface that extends laterally away from the outer surface of said outer hub base, the proximal facing surface being adjacent the proximal end of said base and said side surface extends between the proximal facing surface and the distal facing surface.
- 16. The cutting accessory of claim 14, wherein at least two said lock tabs extend outwardly from said outer hub base, said lock tabs being spaced apart from each other.
- 17. The cutting accessory of claim 14, wherein said outer hub is shaped so that said base has a circular cross sectional profile with a constant diameter.
- 18. A cutting accessory for coupling to a powered surgical handpiece, said cutting accessory including:
a drive hub, said drive hub being formed with at least one geometric feature for causing said drive hub to engage an output shaft of a motor integral with the handpiece; a drive shaft that extends forward from said drive hub; an outer hub, said outer hub being disposed over said drive hub and having: a base dimensioned to be fitted in a complementary opening in the handpiece, said base having an open proximal end in which said drive hub is seated; and a head integral with and located forward of said base, said head being shaped to define a bore through which said drive shaft extends; a seal formed from elastomeric material attached to the open proximal end of said outer hub base, said seal being shaped to define at least one rib that is located outside of said outer hub that surrounds said drive hub; and an outer housing that extends distally from said outer hub head and that at least partially surrounds said drive shaft.
- 19. The cutting accessory of claim 18, wherein:
said outer hub base has an inner wall that defines the open end of said base; and said seal includes a base section disposed against the inner wall of said hub base and said at least one rib is located proximal to the base section.
- 20. The cutting accessory of claim 18, wherein said seal is formed to have at least two ribs that surround said drive hub, said ribs being laterally spaced apart from each other.
- 21. The cutting accessory of claim 18, wherein at least two of said ribs have different outer diameters.
- 22. The cutting accessory of claim 18. wherein said outer hub base has an outer surface with a circular cross-sectional profile.
- 23. A cutting accessory comprising:
a drive hub, said drive hub having: a neck with a diameter, said neck having attached thereto a geometric feature for coupling said drive hub to a handpiece motor; and a head integral with and located at the distal end of said neck, said neck having a diameter, the diameter of said head being greater than the diameter of said neck; a drive shaft connected to said drive hub head that extends forward of said drive hub; an outer hub at least partially disposed over said drive hub, said outer hub having: a base having an inner wall that defines a proximal end opening, said drive hub head and at least a portion of said drive hub neck being disposed in the proximal end opening; and a head integral with and disposed over said base, said head having a bore through which said drive shaft extends; at least one stop member formed of material that yields upon application of pressure, that extends inwardly from the inner wall of said outer hub base, said at least one stop member defining an open section within the outer hub base proximal end opening that has a diameter greater than the diameter of said drive hub neck and less than the diameter of said drive hub head, said stop member being positioned in said outer hub base so that the open section defined by said stop member subtends a portion of said drive hub neck; and an outer housing that extends forward from said outer hub head that at least partially surrounds said drive shaft.
- 24. The cutting accessory of claim 23, wherein a ring of elastomeric material extends circumferentially around the inner wall of said outer hub base, said ring surrounding a portion of said drive hub stem and said at least one stop is formed integrally with said ring and extends inwardly from said ring.
- 25. The cutting accessory of claim 23, wherein at least two said stop members that are spaced apart from each other extend inwardly from the inner wall of said outer hub base, said stop members collectively having inner surfaces that define the open section with the outer hub base proximal end opening that has a diameter greater than the diameter of said drive hub neck and less than the diameter of said drive hub head.
- 26. The cutting accessory of claim 23, wherein said drive hub is further shaped to have a stem that extends proximally from said neck, said stem being located proximal to said outer hub and said stem is formed with the geometric feature for coupling said drive hub to the handpiece motor.
- 27. A cutting accessory for actuation by a powered surgical handpiece, said cutting accessory comprising:
a drive hub, said drive hub formed with at least one geometric feature for causing said drive hub to engage an output shaft of a handpiece motor; a drive shaft that extends forward from said drive hub; an outer hub disposed over said drive hub, said outer hub having: a base that has an inner wall that defines an outer hub proximal end opening, said drive hub being at least partially seated in the outer hub proximal end opening; and a head disposed over said base, said head having a bore through which said drive shaft extends; a seal formed of flexible material located adjacent the inner wall of said outer hub base, said seal shaped to have: a first and second longitudinally spaced apart end sections, each said end section abutting and circumferentially surrounding the inner wall of said outer hub base; a main section that extends between said end sections, said main section having an outer surface that is spaced inwardly relative to said end sections so that the main section has an outer surface that is spaced inwardly of the inner wall of said outer hub base; an RFID chip and coil assembly disposed between the inner wall of said outer hub base, said seal main section and said seal end sections; and an outer housing that extends forward from said outer hub head and that at least partially surrounds said drive shaft.
- 28. The cutting accessory of claim 27, wherein:
said outer hub base is formed with at least one lateral opening, said at least one lateral opening being in registration with one of said seal end sections; and said end section with which said lateral opening is in registration is formed with a lock tab that extends through said lateral opening.
- 29. The cutting accessory of claim 27, wherein said outer hub base and said seal are collectively dimensioned so insertion of said seal against the inner wall of said outer hub base causes said seal end sections to form a moisture tight barrier between said outer hub base and said seal.
- 30. The cutting accessory of claim 27, wherein:
said seal is formed so that there is a recess in the outer surface of the main section outer surface; and said RFID chip is seated in said recess of said seal main section.
- 31. The cutting accessory of claim 27, wherein:
said outer hub base has a proximal end, the outer hub proximal end opening being open from the proximal end; and said seal is further formed to define at least one rib that is located outside of the proximal end of said outer hub base, said at least one rib surrounding the outer hub proximal end opening.
- 32. The cutting accessory of claim 27, wherein:
said drive hub is shaped to have a proximally-located neck that has a diameter and a distally located head that has a diameter, the diameter of said head being greater than the diameter of said neck; said seal is shaped to have at least one stop tab that extends inwardly from the inner surface of said seal towards said drive hub stem, and said at least one stop tab is dimensioned so that said stop tab has an inner surface that defines an open section within the outer hub proximal end opening that has a diameter greater than the diameter of said drive hub neck and less than the diameter of said drive neck head.
