Claims
- 1. A knee prosthesis for unicompartmental implantation into a knee joint comprising:
a body having a substantially elliptical shape in plan and a pair of opposed faces; a peripheral edge extending between the faces and having a first side, a second side opposite the first side, a first end and a second end opposite the first end; at least one keel member extending from one of the faces; a first dimension D defined by the first end and the second end; and a second dimension F defined by the first side and the second side, where the dimension F is from about 0.25 to about 1.5 of the dimension D.
- 2. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 1 wherein the body includes two separate keel members, a first one of the keel members being angularly disposed with a second one of the keel members.
- 3. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 1 wherein the at least one keel member is wedge shaped.
- 4. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 1 wherein the at least one keel member includes a raised portion extending from its associated face.
- 5. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 4 wherein the raised portion is adjacent the peripheral edge.
- 6. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 2 wherein at least one of the keel members is wedge shaped and includes a raised portion adjacent the peripheral edge.
- 7. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 6 wherein the first one of keel members intersects the second one of the keel members.
- 8. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 1 wherein the at least one keel member has a raised portion adjacent one of the ends of the body and a tapered portion adjacent the other of the ends of the body.
- 9. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 1 wherein the at least one keel member has a raised portion adjacent one of the sides of the body and a tapered portion adjacent the other of the sides of the body.
- 10. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 2 wherein each keel member has a raised portion and a tapered portion, the raised portion of the first one of the keel members being adjacent the raised portion of the second one of the keel members.
- 11. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 2 wherein each keel member has a raised portion and a tapered portion, the tapered portion of the first one of the keel members being adjacent the tapered portion of the second one of the keel members.
- 12. 12. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 10 wherein the raised portion of each keel is adjacent the peripheral edge and the tapered portion of each keel terminates adjacent a respective one of the first and second sides of the body.
- 13. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 11 wherein the raised portion of each keel is adjacent the peripheral edge and the tapered portion of each keel terminates adjacent a central region of the body.
- 14. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 2 wherein the first one of the keel members includes a raised portion adjacent one of the ends of the body and a tapered portion extending towards the other of the ends of the body, the second one of the keel members being non-tapered and extending from one of the sides of the body to the other of the sides of the body.
- 15. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 1 wherein one of the opposed faces is convex and the other of the opposed faces is concave, the at least one keel member extending from the convex face.
- 16. The knee prosthesis as defined in claim 1 wherein one of the opposed faces is concave and the other of the opposed faces is planar, the at least one keel member extending from the planar face.
- 17. A method of providing an implantable knee prosthesis for unicompartmental implantation into a knee joint comprising:
providing a body having a substantially elliptical shape in plan and a pair of opposed faces; extending a peripheral edge between the faces; extending at least one keel member from one of the faces; and dimensioning the faces to be defined by a dimension D extending between opposite ends of the body, and a dimension F extending between opposite sides of the body, the dimension F being in the range of about 0.25 to about 1.5 of the dimension D.
- 18. The method as defined in claim 17 further comprising:
providing the body with two separate keel members.
- 19. The method as defined in claim 18 further comprising:
angularly orienting a first one of the keel members with a second one of the keel members.
- 20. The method as defined in claim 17 further comprising:
removing at least a portion of a meniscus in the knee joint; measuring for a length dimension of the prosthesis; measuring for a thickness dimension of the prosthesis; inserting a trial component into the knee joint; verifying sizing for the trial component; removing the trial component; and inserting the prosthesis.
- 21. The method as defined in claim 17 further comprising;
forming the at least one keel member in a wedge shape.
