Claims
- 1. An apparatus comprising:a computer system having a microprocessor capable of operating in a protected mode, a memory and a disk drive, said disk drive including a write only register which receives disk drive configuration data from said computer system, said computer system including a system responsive to a transfer of disk drive configuration data to said write only register associated with said disk drive for storing in a shadow location of said memory, a duplicate of said disk drive configuration data when said disk drive configuration data is initially loaded into said write only register.
- 2. An apparatus according to claim 1, including means for selectively providing and terminating power to said disk drive, and means for transferring said data from said shadow location of said memory to said write only register in said disk drive after power for said disk drive is turned off and the back on.
- 3. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said computer system capable of operating in a protected mode includes a processor having first and second operational modes, wherein in said first operational mode said processor has a predetermined set of operational capabilities and first subset of said operation capabilities and is inhibited from performing a second subset of said operational capabilities different from said first subset, and control means responsive to a transfer of data to said write only register in said disk drive for saving information from said processor, thereafter forcing said processor to said first operation mode, and thereafter effecting said storing of said data in said shadow location of said memory.
- 4. An apparatus comprising:a computer system capable of operating in a protected mode having a memory and one or more peripheral devices, at least one of said one or more peripheral devices including a write only register associated therewith which receives peripheral device configuration data from said computer system, said computer system including a system responsive to a transfer of peripheral device configuration data to said write only register associated with said peripheral device for storing in said memory, a duplicate of said peripheral device configuration data when said peripheral device configuration data is first loaded into said write only register.
- 5. An apparatus according to claim 4, including means for selectively providing and terminating power to said peripheral device, and means for transferring said data from said storage part of said memory to said write only register in said peripheral device after power for said peripheral device is turned off and the back on.
- 6. An apparatus according to claim 4, wherein said computer system includes a processor having first and second operational modes, wherein in said first operational mode said processor has a predetermined set of operational capabilities and in said second operational mode said processor can perform a first subset of said operation capabilities and is inhibited from performing a second subset of said operational capabilities different from said first subset, and control means responsive to a transfer of data to said write only register in said peripheral device for saving information from said processor, thereafter forcing said processor to said first operation mode, and thereafter effecting said storing of said data in said storage part of said memory.
