Claims
- 1. An apparatus, comprising: circuitry which is selectively operable in one of a normal mode and a reduced power mode and which includes a processors; power supply means for supplying power to said circuitry; a manually actuatable power buttons; means for identifying as an operator-specified configuration condition which is associated with said power button a selected one of first and second conditions, wherein said first condition indicates that, in response to manual operation of said power button when said circuitry is in said normal mode, said circuitry is to be placed in said reduced power mode, and wherein said second condition indicates that, in response to manual operation of said power button when said circuitry is in said normal mode, said power supply means is to be deactuated; means responsive to manual operation of said power button when said circuitry is in said normal mode and said configuration condition is said first condition for placing said circuitry in said reduced power mode in a manner avoiding information loss; and control means coupled to said power supply means and having means responsive to manual operation of said power button when said circuitry is in said normal mode for respectively inhibiting and providing an operator perceptible warning when said configuration condition is respectively said first condition and said second condition, wherein said warning indicates that a transition is about to be made to a state where said power supply means is deactuated and requests operator confirmation that said power supply means is to be deactuated.
- 2. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said control means includes means for deactuating said power supply means in response to operator confirmation that said power supply means is to be deactuated, and for otherwise maintaining said circuitry in said normal mode.
- 3. An apparatus according to claim 2, including a display and a keyboard, wherein said control means displays said warning on said display, and is responsive to said keyboard for accepting said operator confirmation from said keyboard.
- 4. An apparatus according to claim 3, wherein said warning is a textual message.
- 5. An apparatus according to claim 1, wherein when said circuitry is respectively in said normal mode and said reduced power mode, said processor is respectively in a normal mode and a reduced power mode.
- 6. A method of operating an apparatus having circuitry which is selectively operable in one of a normal mode and a reduced power mode and which has a processor, having power supply means for supplying power to said circuitry, and having a manually actuatable power button, said method comprising the steps of: identifying as an operator-specified configuration condition which is associated with said power button a selected one of first and second conditions, wherein said first condition indicates that, in response to manual operation of said power button when said circuitry is in said normal mode, said circuitry is to be placed in said reduced power mode, and wherein said second condition indicates that, in response to manual operation of said power button when said circuitry is in said normal mode, said power supply means is to be deactuated; responding to manual operation of said power button when said circuitry is in said normal mode and said configuration condition is said first condition by placing said circuitry in said reduced power mode in a manner avoiding information loss; and responding to manual operation of said power button when said circuitry is in said normal mode by respectively inhibiting and providing an operator perceptible warning when said configuration condition is respectively said first condition and said second condition, wherein said warning indicates that a transition is about to be made to a state where said power supply means is deactuated and requests operator confirmation that said power supply means is to be deactuated.
- 7. A method according to claim 6, including the steps of deactuating said power supply means in response to operator confirmation that said power supply means is to be deactuated, and maintaining said circuitry in said normal mode in response to an operator indication that said power supply means is to remain actuated.
- 8. A method according to claim 7, including the steps of providing a display and a keyboard, displaying said warning on said display, and accepting said operator confirmation from said keyboard.
- 9. A method according to claim 8, including the step of displaying said warning as a textual message.
- 10. A method according to claim 6, including the step of operating said processor respectively in a normal operational mode and a reduced power mode when said circuitry is respectively being operated in said normal mode thereof and said reduced power mode thereof.
