Claims
- 1. A suspension fork assembly for a steerable wheel, comprising
- an elongated inner tube;
- an elongated outer tube coaxially mounted together with said inner tube, said inner tube and said outer tube being adapted to telescope with respect to each other;
- a self-contained cartridge type shock absorber disposed in the inner and outer tubes such that the shock absorber is removable as a unit, the shock absorber having a first end attached to the inner tube and a second end attached to the outer tube.
- 2. A suspension fork assembly according to claim 1 wherein the cartridge type shock absorber comprises an outer cartridge housing and an internal piston shaft, the outer cartridge housing being connected to said inner tube and the internal piston shaft being connected to said outer tube.
- 3. A bicycle having suspension system, comprising
- a frame comprising a head tube;
- a first steering tube mounted in the head tube and couple to a handlebar stem of the bicycle;
- a second steering tube fitting and telescoping within the first steering tube and coupled to a bicycle fork; and
- a self-contained shock absorbing system disposed within the first and second steering tubes such that the shock absorbing system is removable as a unit, the shock absorbing system comprising a cartridge cylinder having a first chamber containing hydraulic fluid.
- 4. A bicycle according to claim 3, wherein the shock absorbing system further comprises:
- a piston located within the cartridge cylinder, and
- a piston shaft having a first end coupled to the first steering tube and a second end connected to the piston within the cartridge cylinder.
- 5. A bicycle according to claim 4, further comprising:
- a hand operated controller;
- a tuning shaft extending within the piston shaft and having a first end coupled to the hand operated controller for permitting variation in damping provided by the shock absorbing system.
- 6. A bicycle according to claim 3, wherein the cartridge cylinder further comprises a second chamber containing a spring element.
- 7. A bicycle according to claim 6, wherein said spring element is an air shock and the first and second chambers are separated by a floating piston.
- 8. A suspension fork assembly for a steerable wheel, comprising
- an elongated inner tube;
- an elongated outer tube coaxially mounted together with said inner tube, said inner tube and outer tubes being adapted to telescope with respect to each other;
- a cartridge type shock absorber disposed in the inner and outer tubes the shock absorber having a first end attached to the inner tube and a second end attached to the outer tube, wherein the shock absorber comprises
- an outer cylinder cartridge having an open first end and a closed second end;
- a hydraulic piston and cylinder combination comprising:
- a tubular piston shaft axially disposed within the outer cylinder cartridge with an outer end extending externally thereto through the open first end and an inner end disposed within the outer cylinder cartridge,
- a first piston assembly connected to the tubular piston shaft at a central location thereto,
- a second piston assembly connected to the tubular piston shaft at the inner end thereof,
- a bulkhead attached to the outer cylinder cartridge between the first piston and the second piston forming a first fluid chamber between the bulkhead and the first piston and a second fluid chamber between the bulkhead and the second piston,
- a fluid passage within the tubular piston shaft, and
- flow restriction mechanism associated with the fluid passage to provide a desired fluid flow constriction between the first and second fluid chambers; and
- a gas chamber formed between the second piston and the closed end of the cylinder cartridge, said gas chamber having an gas pressure acting as a spring applying a pressure force upon the second piston.
- 9. A suspension fork assembly according to claim 8 wherein the shock absorber further comprises:
- a floating piston between the second piston and the gas chamber, the floating piston being separate from the second piston and axially movable relative thereto;
- an intermediate fluid chamber between the second piston and the floating piston;
- an air/fluid seal associated with the floating piston between the floating piston and the outer cylinder cartridge.
- 10. A suspension fork assembly according to claim 8 wherein the shock absorber further comprises an actuator operably connected to the flow restriction mechanism for operably adjusting the desired fluid flow constriction between the first and second fluid chambers.
- 11. A suspension system for a bicycle having a front wheel and handlebars, the suspension system being located between the front wheel and the handlebars and comprising:
- an outer tube;
- an inner tube fitting and telescoping within the outer tube; and
- a self-contained shock absorbing cartridge that is readily inserted within the inner and outer tubes such that the shock absorbing cartridge is removable as a unit, the shock absorbing cartridge damping telescoping movement between the inner and outer tubes.
- 12. A front fork assembly for a bicycle frame, comprising
- an elongated inner tube;
- an elongated outer tube coaxially mounted together with said inner tube, said inner tube and outer tubes being adapted to telescope with respect to each other, said outer tube adapted to be mounted in a bicycle frame;
- a self-contained cartridge type shock absorber disposed in said inner and outer tubes such that said shock absorber is removable as a unit, said shock absorber having a first end attached to the said tube and a second end attached to said outer tube.
- 13. A suspension fork assembly according to claim 12 wherein said cartridge type shock absorber comprises an outer cartridge housing and an internal piston shaft, said outer cartridge housing being connected to said inner tube and said internal piston shaft being connected to said outer tube.
- 14. A front fork assembly for a bicycle frame, comprising
- an elongated inner tube;
- an elongated outer tube coaxially mounted together with said inner tube, said inner tube and outer tubes being adapted to telescope with respect to each other, said outer tube adapted to be mounted in a bicycle frame;
- a cartridge type shock absorber disposed in said inner and outer tubes, said shock absorber having a first end attached to the said inner tube and a second end attached to said outer tube,
- wherein said shock absorber comprises
- an outer cylinder cartridge having an open first end and a closed second end;
- a hydraulic piston and cylinder combination comprising:
- a tubular piston shaft axially disposed within the outer cylinder cartridge with an outer end extending externally thereto through the open first end and an inner end disposed within the outer cylinder cartridge,
- a first piston assembly connected to the tubular piston shaft at a central location thereto,
- a second piston assembly connected to the tubular piston shaft at the inner end thereof,
- a bulkhead attached to the outer cylinder cartridge between the first piston and the second piston forming a first fluid chamber between the bulkhead and the first piston and a second fluid chamber between the bulkhead and the second piston,
- a fluid passage within the tubular piston shaft, and
- flow restriction mechanism associated with the fluid passage to provide a desired fluid flow constriction between the first and second fluid chambers; and
- a gas chamber formed between the second piston and the second closed end of the cylinder cartridge, said gas chamber having an gas pressure acting as a spring applying a pressure force upon the second piston.
- 15. A front fork assembly according to claim 14 further comprising:
- a floating piston between the second piston and the gas chamber, the floating piston being separate from the second piston and axially movable relative thereto;
- an intermediate fluid chamber between the second piston and the floating piston;
- an air/fluid seal associated with the floating piston between the floating piston and the outer cylinder cartridge.
- 16. A front fork assembly according to claim 14 further comprising an actuator operable connected to the flow restriction mechanism for operably adjusting the desired fluid flow constriction between the first and second fluid chambers.
- 17. A suspension assembly having a front wheel and handlebars, the suspension system being located between the front wheel and the handlebars and comprising:
- an outer tube;
- an inner tube fitting and telescoping within the outer tube; and
- a shock absorbing cartridge that is readily inserted within the inner and outer tubes for damping telescoping movement between the inner and outer tubes,
- wherein the cartridge is removably installed as a unit between the inner tube and the outer tube and comprises:
- an outer cylinder having an open first end and a closed second end; and
- a hydraulic piston and cylinder combination comprising:
- a tubular piston shaft axially disposed within the outer cylinder with an outer end extending externally thereto through the open first end and an inner end disposed within the outer cylinder,
- a first piston assembly connected to the tubular piston shaft within the outer cylinder, and
- a fluid passage within the tubular piston shaft.
- 18. A suspension system according to claim 17 further comprising:
- a gas chamber formed within the outer cylinder said gas chamber having a gas pressure acting as a spring.
- 19. A suspension system according to claim 18 further comprising a floating piston positioned between the first piston assembly and the gas chamber.
- 20. A suspension fork assembly for a steerable wheel, comprising
- an elongated inner tube;
- an elongated outer tube coaxially mounted together with said inner tube, said inner tube and said outer tube being adapted to telescope with respect to each other;
- a cartridge type shock absorber disposed in the inner and outer tubes, said cartridge type shock absorber comprising an outer cartridge housing and an internal piston shaft, the outer cartridge housing being connected to said inner tube and the internal piston shaft being connected to said outer tube, wherein the piston shaft comprises a hollow tube.
- 21. A front fork assembly for a bicycle frame, comprising
- an elongated inner tube;
- an elongated outer tube coaxially mounted together with said inner tube, said inner tube and outer tubes being adapted to telescope with respect to each other, said outer tube adapted to be mounted in a bicycle frame;
- a cartridge type shock absorber disposed in said inner and outer tubes, said shock cartridge type shock absorber comprising an outer cartridge housing and an internal piston shaft, said outer cartridge housing being connected to said inner tube and said internal piston shaft being connected to said outer tube, wherein the piston shaft comprises a hollow tube.
- 22. A bicycle having a suspension system, comprising:
- a frame comprising a head tube;
- a first steering tube mounted in the head frame and coupled to a handlebar stem of the bicycle;
- a second steering tube fitting and telescoping within the first steering tube and coupled to a bicycle fork; and
- a shock absorbing system disposed within the first and second steering tubes,
- wherein the shock absorbing system comprises:
- a cartridge cylinder having a first chamber containing hydraulic fluid and
- a bulkhead located in the first chamber fixed to the cartridge cylinder for dividing the first chamber into two communicating portions.
