Claims
- 1-33. (Canceled) without prejudice.
- 34. A needle adapted for use in a surgical suture device, the needle having an elongate configuration with an axis extending between a proximal end and a distal end, the needle comprising:
distal portions of the needle defining a sharp needle tip along the axis of the needle, with the axis dividing the needle into a first side and a second side; slot portions of the needle defining a slot along the first side, the slot being positioned to extend outwardly with progressive distal positions along the axis; and void portions defining a void along the second side of the needle proximally of the distal portions defining the sharp needle tip and distally of the slot portions defining the slot.
- 35. The needle recited in claim 34 wherein the slot portions include:
distal slot portions extending laterally of the axis a first distance; and proximal slot portions extending laterally of the axis a second distance less than the first distance.
- 36. The needle recited in claim 34 wherein the void portions are first void portions and the void is a first void, and the needle assembly further comprises:
second void portions defining a second void along the second side of the needle generally proximal of the first void portions and the first slot portions.
- 37. The needle recited in claim 36 wherein the first void portions have a first axial length and the second void portions have a second axial length greater than the first axial length.
- 38. The needle recited in claim 35, wherein:
the distal slot portions extend laterally to a first ledge having a generally parallel relationship with the axis, the first ledge being disposed the first distance from the axis; and the proximal slot portions extend laterally to a second ledge disposed the second distance from the axis.
- 39. The needle recited in claim 34 wherein the distal portions are equally bifurcated by the axis.
- 40. The needle recited in claim 35, wherein:
the first void portions have the general shape of a crescent with a first radius; and the second void portions have the general shape of a second crescent having a second radius greater than the first radius.
- 41. The needle recited in claim 34 being formed of a material enabling the needle to be bent at least 90 degrees and subsequently straightened.
- 42. The needle recited in claim 41 wherein the material comprises nitinol.
- 43. The needle recited in claim 35, wherein:
the slot portions define the slot with a base and a channel extending laterally of the base; the distal slot portions and the proximal slot portions define the channel with a width and the slot portions further comprise base slot portions defining the base of the slot with a configuration of a circle having a diameter greater than the width of the channel.
- 44. A needle adapted for use in a surgical suture device, the needle having an elongate configuration with an axis extending between a proximal end and a distal end, the axis dividing the needle into a notch side and a void side, the needle comprising:
a sharp distal tip; a notch-side edge extending proximally of the tip; a notch-side ramp included in the notch-side edge and disposed proximally of the distal tip; a notch-side ledge included in the notch-side edge and disposed proximally of the notch-side ramp; a notch edge included in the notch-side edge and disposed proximally of the notch-side ledge; a void-side edge extending proximally of the tip; and a void edge included in the void-side edge and disposed generally laterally opposite the notch-side ledge of the notch-side edge.
- 45. The needle recited in claim 44 wherein the void edge is a first void edge and the needle further comprises:
a second void edge included in the void-side edge and disposed proximally of the first void edge.
- 46. The needle recited in claim 45 wherein the first void edge defines a first void having the shape of a first crescent; and
the second void has the shape of a second crescent.
- 47. The needle recited in claim 46, wherein:
the first crescent has a first radius; and the second crescent has a second radius greater than the first radius.
- 48. The needle recited in claim 44 wherein the notch edge includes:
a distal notch edge extending laterally from the axis a first distance; and a proximal notch edge extending laterally from the axis a second distance less than the first distance.
- 49. The needle recited in claim 48, wherein:
the distal notch edge extends outwardly with progressive distal positions along the axis.
