Claims
- 1. An adjustable guard rail assembly for use adjacent railway trackwork, comprising:
- a) a plurality of chairs spaced apart along a length of said trackwork, each chair including;
- i) a forward extending portion having a surface tangential to a rail head of said trackwork,
- ii) an elevated portion adapted to support a guard rail, said elevated portion having a first support surface proximate said trackwork, and a second support surface extending in an upward direction along one edge of said first support surface,
- b) a guard rail communicating with said first support surface of each said chair, the guard rail including a front portion having a wheel engaging surface, and a thinner back portion including a friction engaging surface for providing continuous engagement with said second support surface of each said chair as said guard rail is adjusted to any selected position toward or away from said trackwork, said guard rail further including a top surface having at least two recessed portions formed therein, each said recessed portion having an elongated aperture extending through said thinner back portion, each aperture being elongated in a direction parallel to said friction engaging surface, and
- c) fastening means for attaching said guard rail to said spaced apart chairs.
- 2. The invention recited in claim 1 wherein said friction engaging surface of said guard rail includes at least two spaced apart tail pieces positioned along the length of said guard rail, each said tail piece extending from said thinner back portion in a direction away from said wheel engaging surface, and each said tail piece including said friction engaging surface for providing continuous engagement with said second surface of each said chair as said guard rail is adjusted to any selected position toward or away from said trackwork.
- 3. The invention recited in claim 1 wherein said second support surface and said friction engaging surface are parallel.
- 4. The invention recited in claim 3 wherein said second support surface is angled toward said trackwork.
- 5. The invention recited in claim 1 wherein each said recessed portion is parallel to said second support surface.
- 6. The invention recited in claim 1 wherein said fastening means includes;
- a) a first friction plate having a configuration shaped to fit within said recessed portion, said friction plate including an elongated aperture corresponding to said elongated aperture of said recessed portion, and a top surface having a plurality of upward pointing serrations, and
- b) a second, smaller friction plate including an aperture communicating with said elongated aperture of said first friction plate, said second friction plate having a bottom surface including a plurality of downward pointing serrations for engagement with said upward pointing serrations of said first friction plate.
- 7. The invention recited in claim 6 wherein said serrations are perpendicular to said wheel engaging surface.
- 8. The invention recited in claim 6 wherein said fastening means includes a threaded fastener extending through said first and said second friction plates, said threaded fastener providing means for attaching said guard rail to said chairs.
- 9. The invention recited in claim 1 wherein said adjustable guard rail assembly is adjacent a railway switch point.
