Claims
- 1. A communication network, comprising:
- a central office switching system;
- an optical fiber communication link providing a plurality of two-way communication channels to the central office switching system;
- wire circuits running to a plurality of respective customer premises;
- a switchable optical network unit, said switchable optical network unit, comprising:
- (1) an optical/electrical interface coupled to the optical fiber communication link,
- (2) a multiplexer/demultiplexer electrically coupled to the optical/electrical interface,
- (3) a plurality of line cards, each line card providing a two-way communications interface between the multiplexer/demultiplexer and one customer drop line port,
- (4) a plurality of terminals for connection to the wire circuits running to a plurality of respective customer premises,
- (5) a switch coupled between the customer drop line ports of the line cards and the terminals, providing selective connections between the customer drop line ports of the line cards and the terminals, and
- (6) a controller for automatically activating the switch in response to control signals received via the optical fiber communication link; and
- a plurality of network interface devices, one network interface device being located at each customer premises and providing a connection of at least one of the wire circuits to a customer premises wiring circuit.
- 2. A network as in claim 1, further comprising an operations control center providing the control signals.
- 3. A network as in claim 1, wherein the central office switching system comprises a host digital terminal coupled to the optical fiber communication link and a switch coupled to the host digital terminal.
- 4. A network as in claim 3, wherein the switch in the central office switching system comprises a telephone service switch.
- 5. A network as in claim 1, wherein the network interface device comprises:
- at least one customer side terminal for connection to a customer premises wiring circuit;
- a first network side terminal for connection to a primary one of the wire circuits;
- a second network side terminal for connection to an auxiliary one of the wire circuits;
- a primary/auxiliary line selection switch providing selective connections between the at least one customer side terminal and the network side terminals; and
- a controller automatically controlling the primary/auxiliary line selection switch.
- 6. A communication network, comprising:
- a central office switching system;
- an optical fiber link providing a plurality of two-way communication channels to the central office switching system;
- wire circuits running to a plurality of respective customer premises;
- a switchable optical network unit, said switchable optical network unit, comprising:
- (1) an optical/electrical interface coupled to the optical fiber link,
- (2) a multiplexer/demultiplexer electrically coupled to the optical/electrical interface,
- (3) a plurality of line cards, each line card for providing a two-way communications interface between the multiplexer/demultiplexer and one customer drop line port,
- (4) a plurality of terminals connected to the wire circuits,
- (5) a switch coupled between the customer drop line ports of the line cards and the terminals, for providing selective connections between the customer drop line ports of the line cards and the terminals, and
- (6) a controller for automatically activating the switch; and
- a plurality of network interface devices, one network interface device being located at each customer premises and providing a connection of at least one of the wire circuits to a customer premises wiring circuit.
- 7. A communication network as in claim 6, wherein the plurality of line cards comprises:
- a first group of line cards providing a first type of line sided service; and
- a second group of line cards providing a second type of line sided service different from the first type of line sided service.
- 8. A communication network as in claim 7, wherein:
- the first group of line cards provide an analog telephone service; and
- the second group of line cards provide an integrated services digital network (ISDN) type service.
- 9. A communication network as in claim 8, wherein the plurality of line cards further comprises a third group of line cards providing a broadband service.
- 10. A communication network as in claim 7, wherein:
- the first group of line cards provide a telephone service; and
- the second group of line cards provide a broadband service.
- 11. A communication network as in claim 6, wherein the optical/electrical interface comprises an interface for coupling to upstream and downstream optical fibers in the fiber link.
- 12. A communication network as in claim 6, wherein the optical/electrical interface comprises:
- a primary optical/electrical interface for coupling to a first optical fiber digital communication link; and
- an auxiliary optical/electrical interface for coupling to a second optical fiber digital communication link.
- 13. A communication network as in claim 12, wherein:
- the primary optical/electrical interface comprises a coupling to a first pair of optical fibers in the fiber link; and
- the auxiliary optical/electrical interface comprises a coupling to a second pair of optical fibers in the fiber link.
- 14. A communication network as in claim 6, further comprising a diagnostic device for conducting test measurements on the wire circuits coupled to the terminals and communicating test measurement results via the optical/electrical interface.
- 15. A communication network, comprising:
- a central office switching system;
- an optical fiber communication link providing a plurality of two-way communication channels to the central office switching system;
- at least two wire circuits running to a customer premises;
- a switchable optical network unit comprising:
- (1) an optical/electrical interface for coupling to at least one optical fiber of the optical fiber communication link,
- (2) a multiplexer/demultiplexer electrically coupled to the optical/electrical interface,
- (3) a line card for providing a two-way communications interface between the multiplexer/demultiplexer and one customer drop line port,
- (4) a first customer drop cable wiring terminal for connection to a primary drop cable wiring circuits,
- (5) a second customer drop cable wiring terminal connected to an auxiliary one of the drop cable wiring circuit,
- (6) a switch coupled between the customer drop line port of the line card and the terminals, for providing selective connections between the customer drop line port of the line card and the terminals, and
- (7) a controller for automatically activating the switch; and
- a network interface device, located at the customer premises and selectively providing a connection of at least one of the wire circuits to a customer premises wiring circuit.
- 16. A communication network as in claim 15, wherein:
- the controller receives control signals via the optical/electrical interface; and the controller activates the switch in response to the received control signals.
- 17. A communication network as in claim 16, further comprising a diagnostic device for conducting test measurements on the circuits coupled to the terminals and communicating test measurement results via the optical/electrical interface.
- 18. A communication network, comprising:
- a central office switching system;
- an optical fiber communication link providing a plurality of two-way communication channels to the central office switching system;
- a drop line running to a customer premises;
- a switchable optical network unit comprising:
- (1) an optical/electrical interface for coupling to at least one optical fiber of the optical fiber communication link,
- (2) a multiplexer/demultiplexer electrically coupled to the optical/electrical interface,
- (3) a first line card for providing a two-way communications interface between the multiplexer/demultiplexer and one customer drop line port in accord with a first service protocol,
- (4) a second line card for providing a two-way communications interface between the multiplexer/demultiplexer and one customer drop line port in accord with a second service protocol that is different from the first service protocol,
- (5) a customer drop cable wiring terminal connected to the drop line,
- (6) a switch coupled between the customer drop line ports of the first and second line cards and the terminal, for providing selective connections between the customer drop line ports of the first and second line cards and the terminal, and
- (7) a controller for automatically activating the switch; and
- network interface device, located at the customer premises and providing a connection of the drop line to a customer premises wiring circuit.
- 19. A communication network as in claim 18, wherein:
- the controller receives control signals via the optical/electrical interface; and
- the controller activates the switch in response to the received control signals.
