Apparatuses and methods consistent with example embodiments relate to a passive discharge for high voltage electronics, and, more particularly, to a safe, switchable passive discharge for vehicles and other high voltage electronics.
Vehicles, such as cars, trucks, sport utility vehicles, crossovers, mini-vans, and other vehicles, include a powertrain system that includes, for example, a propulsion unit, a transmission, drive shafts, wheels, and other suitable components. The propulsion unit may include one or more of an internal combustion engine, a fuel cell, and an electric motor. A hybrid vehicle may include a powertrain system including more than one propulsion unit. For example, a hybrid vehicle may include both an internal combustion engine and an electric motor that operate cooperatively to propel the vehicle.
In an electric-powered vehicle, such as a hybrid vehicle or a purely electric vehicle, the electronics incorporate a high voltage (HV) battery, often referred to as a rechargeable energy storage system (RESS), as well as other electronic devices and components such as inverters, direct current (DC)/DC converters, and on-board chargers (OBCs) to manage energy output and regeneration within the vehicle. One of the safety requirements for each component is to dissipate any residual high voltage energy from internal high voltage capacitors when the components are powered off or in a defined sleep state that occurs when the main HVDC battery has been decoupled from vehicle electronic components. This decoupling is often accomplished via an HV contactor at the HVDC battery.
When the HVDC contactor is decoupled, residual energy must be dissipated within a specified period of time. Typical requirements are that residual energy must be dissipated from high voltage internal components within about 1-2 minutes to less than about 60 volts (V). This may be accomplished using a passive resistive load. However, an effect of this resistive load is that during normal operation, whenever the HVDC contactor is closed, energy is lost through the resistive load and dissipated as heat. This energy loss can be a substantial loss over a period of time, generally referred to as a drive cycle, which will reduce the overall vehicle range.
Example embodiments may address at least the above problems and/or disadvantages and other disadvantages not described above. Also, example embodiments are not required to overcome the disadvantages described above, and may not overcome any of the problems described above.
According to an aspect of an example embodiment, a high voltage (HV) system is provided including: an HV module; a passive resistance load coupled to the HV module; a control circuit coupled to the passive resistance load, wherein the control circuit is operable in a first state in which the control circuit closes an electric circuit between the HV module and the passive resistance load and a second state in which the control circuit opens the electric circuit between the HV module and the passive resistance load; and an isolated power supply coupled to the control circuit, wherein the isolated power supply controls the control circuit to be in one of the first state and the second state. The HV module may include one or more HV electrical components including, but not limited to, an inverter.
The control circuit may include a junction-gate field-effect transistor (JFET).
A first one of a drain and a source of the JFET may be operably coupled to the HV module, a second one of the drain and the source of the JFET may be operably coupled to the passive resistance load, and a gate of the JFET may be operably connected to the isolated power supply.
The isolated power supply may include an integrated circuit.
The passive resistance load may be between about 50,000.00 ohms and about 60,000.00 ohms.
According to an aspect of another example embodiment, a vehicle is provided comprising: a chassis; a plurality of wheels; a transmission operably coupled to the plurality of wheels; an electric motor operably coupled to the transmission; and a battery electrically coupled to the electric motor; wherein the electric motor comprises the HV system described above.
According to an aspect of another example embodiment, a control method is provided including: providing a discharge circuit operably connecting the HV module to a passive resistive load and a control circuit; an isolated power supply, operably coupled to the control circuit and controlling the control circuit to switch between a first state in which the control circuit opens the discharge circuit and a second state in which the closes the discharge circuit; a control circuit closing the discharge circuit, thereby connecting the HV electronics to the passive resistive load and discharging the HV module.
According to an aspect of another example embodiment, a non-transitory computer-readable medium is provided, storing thereon executable instructions that, when executed by a processor, facilitate performance of a method comprising: providing a discharge circuit operably connecting the HV module to a passive resistive load and a control circuit; an isolated power supply, operably coupled to the control circuit and controlling the control circuit to switch between a first state in which the control circuit opens the discharge circuit and a second state in which the closes the discharge circuit; a control circuit closing the discharge circuit, thereby connecting the HV electronics to the passive resistance load and discharging the HV module.

The passenger compartment 18 may be disposed rearward of the engine compartment 20, as shown, though this is variable. The vehicle 10 may include any suitable propulsion system including, but not limited to: an internal combustion engine; one or more electric motors; one or more fuel cells; and a hybrid propulsion system comprising a combination of one or more internal combustion engines and one or more electric motors. According to one or more example embodiments, the vehicle 10 may include a petrol or gasoline fuel engine, such as a spark ignition engine. Alternately or additionally, the vehicle 10 may include a diesel fuel engine, such as a compression ignition engine. The engine compartment 20 houses and/or encloses at least some components of the propulsion system of the vehicle 10. Additionally, or alternatively, propulsion controls, such as an accelerator actuator (e.g., an accelerator pedal), a brake actuator (e.g., a brake pedal), a steering wheel, and other such components are disposed in the passenger compartment 18 of the vehicle 10. The propulsion controls may be actuated or controlled by a driver of the vehicle 10 and may be connected, either directly or via other components, to corresponding components of the propulsion system, such as a throttle, a brake, a vehicle axle, a vehicle transmission, and the like. The propulsion controls may communicate signals to a vehicle computer (e.g., drive by wire) which in turn may control the corresponding propulsion components of the propulsion system.
According to one or more example embodiments, the vehicle 10 may include a transmission in operable communication with a crankshaft via a flywheel, a clutch, a fluid coupling or another means. The transmission may be a manual transmission or an automatic transmission. The vehicle 10 may include one or more pistons, in the case of an internal combustion engine or a hybrid vehicle, which cooperatively operate with the crankshaft to generate force, which is translated through the transmission to one or more axles, which turn the wheels 22.
When the vehicle 10 includes an electric motor, at least one battery or fuel cell provide energy to the electric motor to turn the wheels 22. In a case in which the vehicle 10 includes a battery to provide energy to an electric motor, when the battery is depleted, it may be connected to an electric grid (e.g., using a wall socket) to recharge the battery cells. Additionally, or alternatively, the vehicle 10 may employ regenerative braking which uses an electric motor of the vehicle 10 as a generator to convert kinetic energy lost to deceleration back into stored energy in the battery.
The vehicle 10 may additionally include an automatic vehicle propulsion system, such as a cruise control, an adaptive cruise control module or mechanism, an automatic braking control, another automatic vehicle propulsion system, or a combination thereof. The vehicle 10 may be an autonomous or semi-autonomous vehicle. The vehicle 10 may include additional or fewer features than those generally illustrated or described herein.

According to this example embodiment, the dissipation of excess high voltage charge is fail safe: when power to the microcontroller is lost and/or the circuit is no longer powered, the power will flow to the passive resistance load and will be dissipated.
One or more example embodiments described herein may eliminate the passive resistive energy loss during normal operation. One or more example embodiments may save 2.3 to 2.6 Watts continuous on 400V systems or 13-19 Watts continuous on 800V systems
According to one or more example embodiments, a controller may perform methods described herein. However, these methods are not meant to be limiting, and any type of software executed on a controller can perform one or more methods described herein. For example, any suitable controller, such as a processor executing software within a computing device onboard the vehicle 10, can perform one or more methods described herein.

Implementations of the systems, algorithms, methods, instructions, etc., described herein can be realized in hardware, software, or any combination thereof. The hardware may include, but is not limited to, for example: computers, intellectual property (IP) cores, application-specific integrated circuits (ASICs), programmable logic arrays, optical processors, programmable logic controllers, microcode, microcontrollers, servers, microprocessors, and digital signal processors.
