Claims
- 1. A switched reluctance motor comprising:
- a stator including n stator coil phases for selectively creating magnetic fields in at least n soft magnetic poles;
- a rotor rotatably mounted coaxially with the stator including a number m of soft magnetic pole phases;
- a first commutator plate comprising at least n first contact plates wherein each of the n coil phases of the stator is electrically coupled to a separate one of the n contact plates;
- a first switching device;
- a first rotatably mounted brush consecutively providing electrical contact between each first contact plate and the first switching device;
- a second switching device;
- a second commutator plate comprising at least n second contact plates wherein each of the n coil phases of the stator is electrically coupled to a separate one of the n contact plates;
- a second rotatably mounted brush consecutively providing electrical contact between each second contact plate and the second switching device, wherein, when the first switching device is closed and the second switching device is open, the rotor rotates in a first direction and wherein, when the second switching device is closed and the first switching device is open, the rotor rotates in a second direction opposite to the first direction.
- 2. A switched reluctance motor according to claim 1, wherein the first and second rotatable mounted brushes are mounted in a single brush housing and wherein the single brush housing is mounted between the first and second commutator plates.
- 3. A switched reluctance motor according to claim 2, wherein the first and second commutator plates are mounted so that the first contact plates face the second contact plates.
- 4. A switched reluctance motor comprising:
- a stator including a plurality of phase coils;
- a rotor rotatably mounted coaxially with the stator;
- a first commutator plate comprising a plurality of first contact plates wherein each phase coil of the plurality of phase coils is electrically coupled to a separate one of the plurality of first contact plates;
- a first switching device;
- a first rotatably mounted brush consecutively providing electrical contact between each first contact plate and the first switching device;
- a second switching device;
- a second commutator plate comprising a plurality of second contact plates wherein each phase coil of the plurality of phase coils is electrically coupled to a separate one of the plurality of second contact plates;
- a second rotatably mounted brush consecutively providing electrical contact between each second contact plate and the second switching device, wherein, when the first switching device is closed and the second switching device is open, the rotor rotates in a first direction and wherein, when the second switching device is closed and the first switching device is open, the rotor rotates in a second direction opposite to the first direction.
- 5. A switched reluctance motor according to claim 4, wherein the first and second rotatably mounted brushes are mounted in a single brush housing and wherein the single brush housing is mounted between the first and second commutator plates.
- 6. A switched reluctance motor according to claim 5, wherein the first and second commutator plates are mounted so that the first contact plates face the second contact plates.
- 7. A switched reluctance motor comprising:
- a stator including a plurality of phase coils;
- a rotor rotatably mounted coaxially with the stator;
- a first commutator plate comprising a plurality of first contact plates wherein each phase coil of the plurality of phase coils is electrically coupled to a member of the plurality of first contact plates;
- a first switching device;
- a first rotatably mounted brush consecutively providing electrical contact between each first contact plate and the first switching device;
- a second switching device;
- a second commutator plate comprising a plurality of second contact plates wherein each phase coil of the plurality of phase coils is electrically coupled to a member of the plurality of second contact plates;
- a second rotatably mounted brush consecutively providing electrical contact between each second contact plate and the second switching device, wherein, when the first switching device is closed and the second switching device is open, the rotor rotates in a first direction and wherein, when the second switching device is closed and the first switching device is open, the rotor rotates in a second direction opposite to the first direction.
- 8. A switched reluctance motor according to claim 7, wherein the first and second rotatably mounted brushes are mounted in a single brush housing, and wherein the single brush housing is mounted between the first and second commutator plates.
- 9. A switched reluctance motor according to claim 8, wherein the first and second commutator plates are mounted so that the first contact plates face the second contact plates.
- 10. A switched reluctance motor comprising:
- a stator including a plurality of phase coils;
- a rotor rotatably mounted coaxially with the stator;
- a first commutator plate comprising a plurality of first contact plates wherein each phase coil of the plurality of phase coils is electrically coupled to a member of the plurality of first contact plates;
- a first switching device;
- a first pair of rotatably mounted diametrically opposed brushes consecutively providing electrical contact between each first contact plate and the first switching device;
- a second switching device;
- a second commutator plate comprising a plurality of second contact plates wherein each phase coil of the plurality of phase coils is electrically coupled to a member of the plurality of second contact plates;
- a second pair of rotatably mounted diametrically opposed brushes consecutively providing electrical contact between each second contact plate and the second switching device, wherein, when the first switching device is closed and the second switching device is open, the rotor rotates in a first direction and wherein, when the second switching device is closed and the first switching device is open, the rotor rotates in a second direction opposite to the first direction.
- 11. A switched reluctance motor according to claim 10, wherein the first and second pairs of rotatably mounted brushes are mounted in a single brush housing, and wherein the single brush housing is mounted between the first and second commutator plates.
- 12. A switched reluctance motor according to claim 11, wherein the first and second commutator plates are mounted so that the first contact plates face the second contact plates.
- 13. A switched reluctance motor in accordance with claim 10 wherein the first and second pair of brushes face opposite axial directions.
- 14. A switched reluctance motor in accordance with claim 10 wherein the first pair of rotatably mounted diametrically opposed brushes are electrically connected to each other.
- 15. A switched reluctance motor in accordance with claim 10 wherein the second pair of rotatably mounted diametrically opposed brushes are electrically connected to each other.
