Claims
- 1. In a voltage regulator circuit including a transistor switch for connection to a load and an oscillator circuit, a circuit for performing synchronization and shutdown functions from a single input node, the circuit comprising:
- a synchronization circuit coupled to the oscillator circuit and to the single input node, such that the application of a synchronization signal to the input node causes the regulator circuit to be driven at a frequency determined by the synchronization signal rather than the natural frequency of the regulator circuit;
- a shutdown circuit coupled to input node, the shutdown circuit operating such that the application of a low signal causes the shutdown signal to be applied to the regulator circuit; and
- a protection circuit which prevents the regulator circuit from being driven into a shutdown state when a synchronization signal applied to the input node goes periodically low.
- 2. The voltage regulator circuit of claim 1, wherein the synchronization circuit comprises:
- first and second current sources, each having an output;
- a first transistor having a collector-emitter junction coupled to the output of the first current source and a base coupled to the output of the second current source;
- an isolation transistor having a base coupled to the output of the first current source, the isolation transistor also being coupled to the oscillator circuit; and
- a capacitor coupled between the base of the first transistor and the input node.
- 3. The synchronization circuit of claim 2 further comprising a diode coupled between the collector-emitter junction of the first transistor and a node formed between the base of the first transistor and the capacitor.
- 4. The voltage regulator circuit of claim 1, wherein the protection circuit comprises:
- a shutdown transistor having a base;
- a current source having an output coupled to the base of the shutdown transistor;
- a capacitor coupled to a node formed between base of the shutdown transistor and the output of the current source; and
- a charging transistor which periodically discharges the capacitor in response to the synchronization signal.
- 5. The voltage regulator circuit of claim 1, wherein the shutdown circuit comprises:
- a shutdown transistor having a base;
- first, second, third, and fourth current sources, each having an input and an output;
- a current mirror circuit coupled to each of the input node, the outputs of the first and second current sources, and the input of the third current source;
- a charging transistor having a base coupled to the input of the third current source;
- a capacitor coupled to the output of the fourth current source and to the charging transistor; and
- a shutdown transistor having a base coupled to the capacitor.
