Claims
- 1. An antibacterial composition effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria comprising in combination (1) a diphenyl ether compound having the formula ##STR6## wherein X is a halogen and X.sub.1 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and halogen; and (1) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of 3,4,4'-trichlorocarbanilide - and 3,3'4-trichlorocarbanilides the ratio of (1) to (2) being about 1:3 to 3:1.
- 2. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the diphenyl ether compound is polychlorinated.
- 3. A composition as defined in claim 2 wherein the diphenyl ether is 4,2',4'-trichloro-2-hydroxy diphenyl ether.
- 4. A composition as defined in claim 2 wherein the diphenyl ether is 4,4'-dichloro-2-hydroxy diphenyl ether.
- 5. A composition as defined in claim 1 wherein the ratio of (1) to (2) is about 1:1.
- 6. A composition as defined in claim 3 wherein compound (2) is 3,4,4'-trichlorocarbanilide.
- 7. A composition as defined in claim 6 which comprises equal parts by weight of (1) and (2).
- 8. A composition as defined in claim 6 wherein the ratio of component (1) to (2) is about 1:3.
- 9. An antibacterial detergent composition effective against both gram-negative and gram-positive baterial comprising a detergent selected from the group consisting of soaps and non-soap synthetic anionic, nonionic, cationic and amphoteric detergents and from about 0.01% to about 5% by weight of a mixture of (1) of diphenyl ether compound having the formula ##STR7## wherein X is a halogen and X.sub.1 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and halogen; and (2) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of 3,4,4' trichlorocarbanilide - and 3,3'4-trichlorocarbanilide the ratio of (1) to (2) being about 1:3 to 3:1.
- 10. A composition as defined in claim 9 wherein the diphenyl ether compound (1) is 4,2',4' trichloro - 2-hydroxy diphenyl ether and compound (2) is 3,4,4' trichlorocarbanilide.
- 11. A composition as defined in claim 10 wherein the detergent is soap.
- 12. A composition as defined in claim 8 wherein the detergent is a coco-tallow soap.
- 13. A composition as defined in claim 9, wherein the detergent is an alkyl benzene sulfonate.
- 14. An antibacterial composition effective against both gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria comprising a synthetic, non-soap detergent selected from the group consisting of anionic, nonionic, cationic and amphoteric detergents, and from about 0.01% to about 5% by weight of a mixture of (1) a diphenyl ether compound having the formula: ##STR8## wherein X is a halogen and X.sub.1 is a member selected from the group consisting of hydrogen and halogen; and (2) at least one compound selected from the group consisting of 3,4,4' trichlorocarbanilide - and 3,3',4-trichlorocarbanilide the ratio of (1) to (2) being about 1:9 to about 9:1.
- 15. An antibacterial composition as defined in claim 14 wherein the diphenyl ether compound (1) is 4,2,4' trichloro-2-hydroxy diphenyl ether and compound (2) is 3,4,4' trichlorocarbanilide.
- 16. A composition as defined in claim 15 wherein said detergent is an anionic synthetic detergent.
- 17. A composition as defined in claim 15 wherein said detergent is a nonionic synthetic detergent.
- 18. A composition as defined in claim 11 wherein the ratio of component (1) to (2) is 1:3.
