Claims
- 1. A composition to control the growth of at least one microorganism selected from the group consisting of bacteria, fungi, and mixtures thereof comprising a synergistic microbicidally effective mixture of
- (A) a halogenated acetophenone having the formula ##STR2## in which X is a halogen and Y is a halogen or hydrogen; and (B) at least one organic acid selected from the group consisting of undecylenic acid, lauric acid, oxalic acid, glycolic acid, citric acid, malic acid, their respective salts, and mixtures thereof.
- 2. The composition of claim 1, wherein said bacteria or fungi is Trichoderma harzianum or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
- 3. The composition of claim 1, wherein X is Br, F, Cl or I and Y is H, Br, F, Cl or I.
- 4. The composition of claim 1, wherein the halogenated acetophenone is 2-bromo-4'-hydroxyacetophenone.
- 5. The composition claim 1, wherein the weight ratio of (A) to (B) is from about 0.01:99 to about 99:0.01.
- 6. The composition of claim 5, wherein the weight ratio of (A) to (B) is from about 1:30 to about 30:1.
- 7. The composition of claim 6, wherein the weight ratio of (A) to (B) is from about 1:5 to about 5:1.
- 8. The composition of claim 1, wherein the weight ratio of concentrations are about 0.01 to about 3000 ppm of halogenated acetophenone, and from about 0.1 ppm to about 1% by weight of the organic acid.
- 9. The composition of claim 8, wherein the weight ratio of concentrations are from about 0.1 to 1000 ppm of halogenated acetophenone, and form about 0.1 to 5000 ppm of the organic acid.
- 10. The composition of claim 9, wherein the weight ratio of concentrations are from about 0.1 to 500 ppm of halogenated acetephenone, and from about 0.1 to 2000 ppm of the organic acid.
- 11. The composition of claim 1, wherein said organic acid is undecylenic acid or a salt thereof.
- 12. The composition of claim 1, wherein said organic acid is lauric acid or a salt thereof.
- 13. The composition of claim 1, wherein said organic acid is oxalic acid or a salt thereof.
- 14. The composition of claim 1, wherein said organic acid is glycolic acid or a salt thereof.
- 15. The composition of claim 1, wherein said organic acid is citric acid or a salt thereof.
- 16. The composition of claim 1, wherein said organic acid is malic acid or a salt thereof.
- 17. A method of controlling the growth of at least one microorganism selected from the group consisting of bacteria, fungi, and mixtures thereof in or on a product, material or medium susceptible to attack by said microorganism comprising the step of applying to said product, material or medium a composition comprising a synergistic microbicidally effective mixture of
- (A) a halogenated acetophenone having the formula ##STR3## in which X is a halogen and Y is a halogen or hydrogen; and (B) at least one organic acid selected from the group consisting of undecylenic acid, lauric acid, oxalic acid, glycolic acid, citric acid, malic acid, their respective salts, and mixtures thereof.
- 18. The method of claim 17, wherein said bacteria or fungi is Trichoderma harzianum or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
- 19. The method of claim 17, wherein X is Br, F, Cl or I and Y is H, Br, F, Cl or I.
- 20. The method of claim 17, wherein the halogenated acetophenone is 2-bromo-4'-hydroxyacetophenone.
- 21. The method of claim 17, wherein said product, material or medium is wood pulp, wood chips, lumber, paints, leather, adhesives coatings, animal hides, tanning liquors, paper mill liquors, metalworking fluids, petrochemicals, pharmaceutical formulations, cooling tower water, cosmetics, toiletry formulations, textiles, geological drilling lubricants or agrochemical compositions for crop or seed protection.
- 22. The method of claim 17, wherein said composition is in the form of a solid, dispersion, emulsion or solution.
- 23. The method of claim 17, wherein said components (A) and (B) are added separately to the product, material or medium.
- 24. The method of claim 17, wherein said components (A) and (B) are first combined and then added to the product material or medium.
- 25. The method of claim 17, wherein the weight ratio of concentrations are from about 0.01 to about 3000 ppm of halogenated acetophenone, and from about 0.1 ppm to about 1% by weight of the organic acid.
- 26. The method of claim 25, wherein the weight ratio of concentrations are from about 0.1 to 1000 ppm of halogenated acetophenone, and from about 0.1 to 5000 ppm of the organic acid.
- 27. The method of claim 26, wherein the weight ratio of concentrations are from about 0.1 to 500 ppm of halogenated acetephenone, and from about 0.1 to 2000 ppm of the organic acid.
- 28. The method of claim 17, wherein said organic acid is undecylenic acid or a salt thereof.
- 29. The method of claim 17, wherein said organic acid is lauric acid or a salt thereof.
- 30. The method of claim 17, wherein said organic acid is oxalic acid or a salt thereof.
- 31. The method of claim 17, wherein said organic acid is glycolic acid or a salt thereof.
- 32. The method of claim 17, wherein said organic acid is citric acid or a salt thereof.
- 33. The method of claim 17, wherein said organic acid is malic acid or a salt thereof.
- 34. A method for preventing spoilage of a product, material or medium caused by bacteria or fungi comprising the step of applying to said product, material or medium, a composition comprising a synergistic microbicidally effective mixture of
- (A) a halogenated acetophenone having the formula ##STR4## in which X is a halogen and Y is a halogen or hydrogen; and (B) at least one organic acid selected from the group consisting of undecylenic acid, lauric acid, oxalic acid, glycolic acid, citric acid, malic acid, their respective salts, and mixtures thereof.
- 35. The method of claim 34, wherein said material is seeds or crops.
- 36. The method of claim 34, wherein X is Br, F, Cl or I and Y is H, Br, F, Cl or I.
- 37. The method of claim 34, wherein the halogenated acetophenone is 2-bromo-4'-hydroxyacetophenone.
- 38. The method of claim 34, wherein said organic acid is undecylenic acid or a salt thereof.
- 39. The method of claim 34, wherein said organic acid is lauric acid or a salt thereof.
- 40. The method of claim 34, wherein said organic acid is oxalic acid or a salt thereof.
- 41. The method of claim 34, wherein Said organic acid is glycolic acid or a salt thereof.
- 42. The method of claim 34, wherein said organic acid is citric acid or a salt thereof.
- 43. The method of claim 34, wherein said organic acid is malic acid or a salt thereof.
- 44. A composition to control the growth of at least one microorganism selected from the group consisting of bacteria, fungi, and mixtures thereof comprising a synergistic microbicidal effective mixture of
- (A) a halogenated acetophenone having the formula ##STR5## in which X is a halogen and Y is a halogen or hydrogen; with the proviso that when X represents Br, Y represent a halogen; and
- (B) at least one organic acid selected from the group consisting of benzoic acid, sodium benzoate, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, their respective salts and mixtures thereof.
- 45. The composition of claim 44, wherein said bacteria or fungi is Trichoderma harzianum or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
- 46. The composition claim 44, wherein the weight ratio of (A) to (B) is from about 0.01:99 to about 99:0.01.
- 47. The composition of claim 46, wherein the weight ratio of (A) to (B) is from about 1:30 to about 30:1.
- 48. The composition of claim 47, wherein the weight ratio of (A) to (B) is from about 1:5 to about 5:1.
- 49. The composition of claim 44, wherein the weight ratio of concentrations are about 0.01 to about 3000 ppm of halogenated acetophenone, and from about 0.1 ppm to about 1% by weight of the organic acid.
- 50. The composition of claim 49, wherein the weight ratio of concentrations are from about 0.1 to 1000 ppm of halogenated acetophenone, and form about 0.1 to 5,000 ppm of the organic acid.
- 51. The composition of claim 50, wherein the weight ratio of concentrations are from about 0.1 to 500 ppm of halogenated acetephenone, and from about 0.1 to 2000 ppm of the organic acid.
- 52. The composition of claim 44, wherein said organic acid is benzoic acid or a salt thereof.
- 53. The composition of claim 44, wherein said organic acid is sodium benzoate.
- 54. The composition of claim 44, wherein said organic acid is p-hydroxybenzoic acid or a salt thereof.
- 55. The composition of claim 44, wherein said organic acid is methyl paraben or a salt thereof.
- 56. The composition of claim 44, wherein said organic acid is propyl paraben or a salt thereof.
- 57. A method of controlling the growth of at least one microorganism selected from the group consisting of bacteria, fungi, and mixtures thereof in or on a product, material, or medium susceptible to attack by said microorganism comprising the step of applying to said product, material or medium a composition comprising a synergistic microbicidal effective mixture of
- (A) a halogenated acetophenone having the formula ##STR6## in which X is a halogen and Y is a halogen or hydrogen; with the proviso that when X represents Br, Y represents a halogen; and
- (B) at least one organic acid selected from the group consisting of benzoic acid, sodium benzoate, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, their respective salts, and mixtures thereof.
- 58. The method of claim 57, wherein said bacteria or fungi is Trichoderma harzianum or Pseudomonas aeruginosa.
- 59. The method of claim 57, wherein said product, material, or medium is wood pulp, wood chips, lumber, paints, leather, adhesive coatings, animal hides, tanning liquors, paper mill liquors, metalworking fluids, petrochemicals, pharmaceutical formulations, cooling tower water, cosmetics, toiletry formulations, textiles, geological drilling lubricants, or agrochemical compositions for crop or seed protection.
- 60. The method of claim 57, wherein said composition is in the form of a solid, dispersion, emulsion or solution.
- 61. The method of claim 57, wherein said components (A) and (B) are added separately to the product, material, or medium.
- 62. The method of claim 57, wherein said components (A) and (B) are first combined and then added to the product, material or medium.
- 63. The method of claim 57, wherein the weight ratio of concentrations are from about 0.01 to about 3000 ppm of halogenated acetophenone, and from about 0.1 ppm to about 1% by weight of the organic acid.
- 64. The method of claim 63, wherein the weight ratio of concentrations are from about 0.1 to 1000 ppm of halogenated acetophenone, and from about 0.1 to 5000 ppm of the organic acid.
- 65. The method of claim 64, wherein the weight ratio of concentrations are from about 0.1 to 500 ppm of halogenated acetophenone, and from about 0.1 to 2000 ppm of the organic acid.
- 66. The method of claim 57, wherein said organic is benzoic acid or a salt thereof.
- 67. The method of claim 57, wherein said organic acid is sodium benzoate.
- 68. The method of claim 57, wherein said organic acid is p-hydroxybenzoic acid or a salt thereof.
- 69. The method of claim 57, wherein said organic acid is methyl paraben or a salt thereof.
- 70. The method of claim 57, wherein said organic acid is propyl paraben or a salt thereof.
- 71. A method for preventing spoilage of a product, material, or medium caused by bacteria or fungi comprising the step of applying to said product, material, or medium, a composition comprising synergistic microbicidal effective mixture of
- (A) a halogenated acetophenone having the formula ##STR7## in which X is a halogen and Y is a halogen or hydrogen; with the proviso that when X represents Br, Y represents a halogen; and
- (B) at least one organic acid selected from the group consisting of benzoic acid, sodium benzoate, p-hydroxybenzoic acid, methyl paraben, propyl paraben, their respective salts and mixtures thereof.
- 72. The method of claim 71, wherein said material is seeds or crops.
- 73. The method of claim 71, wherein said organic acid is benzoic acid or a salt thereof.
- 74. The method of claim 71, wherein said organic acid is sodium benzoate.
- 75. The method of claim 71, wherein said organic acid is p-hydroxybenzoic acid or a salt thereof.
