Claims
- 1. An insecticidal composition comprising as essential ingredients an effective insecticidal amount of (A) a non-organophosphorus insecticidal ingredient, plus (B) an activity-enhancing amount of a capsaicinoid, the weight ratio of (B) to (A) being between about 1:10 and 1:500.
- 2. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the weight ratio of (B) to (A) is between about 1:10 and 1:200-400.
- 3. A composition according to claim 1, wherein the weight ratio of (B) to (A) is approximately 1:100 to 1:400.
- 4. A composition of claim 1 wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is capsaicin.
- 5. A composition of claim 4, wherein the insecticide is selected from the group consisting of thiodicarb, methomyl, and pyrethrins.
- 6. A composition of claim 1 wherein the capsaicinoid is in the form of an essentially lipid-free and optionally aqueous solution thereof in a polyol.
- 7. A composition of claim 1, wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is a capsaicinoid and the insecticide is a carbamate-based insecticide.
- 8. A composition of claim 1, wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is a capsaicinoid and the insecticide is an amitraz-based insecticide.
- 9. A composition of claim 1, wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is a capsaicinoid and the insecticide is a pyrethroid- or pyrethrin-based insecticide.
- 10. An insecticidal composition comprising a mixture of (A) a non-organophosphorus insecticidal ingredient or ingredients, and (B) an activity-enhancing amount of capsaicin in a ratio between about 1:10 to 1:500 by weight, the concentration of the insecticidal ingredient or ingredients being an insecticidally-effective concentration.
- 11. A composition of claim 10 in the form of a dilutable concentrate.
- 12. A concentrate of claim 11 wherein the composition is diluted with water.
- 13. A method of killing insects comprising the step of spraying a combination of (A) an effective insecticidal amount of a non-organophosphorus insecticidal ingredient, plus (B) an activity-enhancing amount of a capsaicinoid, upon the insect or upon its habitat, the weight ratio of (B) to (A) being between about 1:10 and 1:500.
- 14. A method of claim 13 wherein the capsaicinoid is in the form of an essentially lipid-free and optionally aqueous solution thereof in a polyol.
- 15. A method for controlling insects comprising contacting insects or their habitat with an insecticidally-active composition of claim 1.
- 16. A method of claim 15, wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is a capsaicinoid and the insecticide is a pyrethroid- or pyrethrin-based insecticide.
- 17. A method of claim 15, wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is a capsaicinoid and the insecticide is a carbamate-based insecticide.
- 18. A method of claim 15, wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is a capsaicinoid and the insecticide is an amitraz-based insecticide.
- 19. A method for controlling insects comprising contacting insects or their habitat with an insecticidally-active composition of claim 2.
- 20. A method for controlling insects comprising contacting insects or their habitat with an insecticidally-active composition of claim 3.
- 21. A method of controlling insects which comprises applying, to the insects or their habitat, an insecticidally-effective amount of a composition of claim 10.
- 22. A method of claim 21, wherein the concentration of active ingredients in the composition is between about 0.001 and 20% by weight.
- 23. A method of claim 21, wherein the concentration of active ingredients in the composition is between about 0.005 and 10% by weight.
- 24. A method of claim 21, wherein the habitat is living plants.
- 25. A method of claim 24, wherein the plants are cotton, soybeans, corn, garden vegetables, fruits, or flowers.
- 26. A method of claim 24, wherein the plants are cotton plants.
- 27. The method of claim 24, wherein the composition is applied by spraying.
- 28. The method of claim 27, wherein the composition is applied by aerial spraying.
- 29. A method of claim 21, wherein the weight ratio is between about 1:100 and 1:400 by weight.
- 30. A method according to claim 21 in which active ingredients are applied at a rate of about 0.8 to about 5.5 pounds per acre.
- 31. A method of claim 21, wherein the composition is applied at a rate of about 2.2 to about 5.36 pounds per acre.
- 32. A method of claim 21, wherein the composition is applied at a rate of about 0.45 to about 2.25 pounds per acre.
- 33. A method of claim 21, wherein the insect controlled is selected from boll worms, army worms, bud worms, loopers, and beetles.
- 34. A method of claim 21, wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is oleoresin capsicum.
- 35. A method of claim 21, wherein the insecticidal ingredient is selected from the group consisting of thiodicarb, methomyl, and pyrethrins.
- 36. A method of claim 35, wherein the insect controlled is selected from the group consisting of bud worms, boll worms, cabbage loopers, army worms, and beetles, and the habitat protected is a plant selected from the group consisting of cotton, beans, corn, garden vegetables, fruits, and flowers.
- 37. A method of enhancing the insecticidal activity of a non-organophosphorus insecticide composition comprising the step of including in said composition an effective insecticidal-activity-enhancing amount of a capsaicinoid, the weight ratio of capsaicinoid to insecticide being between about 0.1 and about 20% by weight.
- 38. A method of claim 37 wherein the weight ratio of capsaicinoid to insecticide is between about 0.2 and about 10% by weight.
- 39. A method of claim 38 wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is capsaicin.
- 40. A method of claim 37 wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is capsaicin.
- 41. A method of claim 40, wherein the enhancement relates to the protection of a plant selected from the group consisting of cotton, beans, corn, garden vegetables, fruits, and flowers against an insect selected from the group consisting of bud worms, boll worms, cabbage loopers, army worms, and beetles.
- 42. A method of claim 41 wherein the enhancement is of an insecticide selected from the group consisting of thiodicarb, methomyl, and pyrethrins.
- 43. A method of claim 42 wherein the capsaicin is in the form of an essentially lipid-free and optionally aqueous solution thereof in a polyol.
- 44. A method of claim 40, wherein the insecticide is selected from the group consisting of thiodicarb, methomyl, and pyrethrins.
- 45. A method of claim 37 wherein the capsaicinoid is in the form of an essentially lipid-free and optionally aqueous solution thereof in a polyol.
- 46. A method of claim 26, wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is a capsaicinoid and the insecticide is an amitraz-based insecticide.
- 47. A method of claim 37, wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is a capsaicinoid and the insecticide is a pyrethroid- or pyrethrin-based insecticide.
- 48. A method of claim 37, wherein the insecticidal activity enhancer is a capsaicinoid and the insecticide is a carbamate-based insecticide.
