Claims
- 1. A process which comprises reacting a cyclopentenone having the formula ##STR17## wherein R.sub.5 is H or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 alkyl, and Aryl is selected from the group consisting of phenyl and phenyl substituted with halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkoxy and trifluoromethyl; with a peroxy organic acid followed by thermolysis to form a cyclopentenonylalkenyl compound having the formula ##STR18## (ii) protecting the 4-hydroxyl group of the cyclopentenonyl moiety of the preceding compound with a protective group P.sub.2, said group P.sub.2 being stable to conjugate addition conditions, to form a compound having the formula ##STR19## (iii) reacting the preceding compound with a lithiocuprate reagent capable of furnishing a prostaglandin beta-chain having the formula ##STR20## wherein P.sub.3 is a protective group stable to conjugate addition conditions, to form a compound having the formula ##STR21## and (iv) hydrolyzing the protective groups P.sub.2 and P.sub.3 to obtain a compound having the formula ##STR22##
- 2. The process of claim 1 wherein R.sub.5 is methyl.
- 3. The process of claim 1 wherein P.sub.2 and P.sub.3 are selected from the class consisting of trimethylsilyl and tetrahydropyranyl, and P.sub.2 and P.sub.3 are the same.
- 4. The process of claim 1, which includes the additional step of resolving and separating at least one optically active isomer.
- 5. The process of claim 1 wherein said reagent is a lithio-cuprate-1-pentyne.
