Claims
- 1. An amide crosslinked synthetic polymeric element formed of a crosslinked copolymer of a water soluble blend of ethylenically unsaturated monomers comprising at least 50% by weight of a monomer providing carboxylic acid groups and an amino group containing monomer, and wherein the crosslinks are amide linkages formed between the carboxylic acid groups and the amino groups, wherein the element is an extruded water absorbent water insoluble fiber, film, foam, filament, or coating, having a gel capacity of at least 15 grams 0.9% NaCl saline per gram dry polymer.
- 2. An amide crosslinked synthetic polymeric element according to claim 1, wherein the monomer providing the carboxylic acid groups is a mixture of free acrylic acid and water soluble alkali metal salts of free acrylic acid in a ratio of 1:1 to 1:10 and the total amount of said mixture is at least 50% by weight of the monomers, further wherein the amino group containing monomer is 3-amino-1-propanol vinyl ether, 2-diethylamino ethyl methacrylate, or allylamine, and wherein the monomer blend includes 0 to 45% by weight of the monomers of plasticizing monomer selected from C1-24 alkyl (meth) acrylates.
- 3. A synthetic polymeric element formed of a cross linked linear copolymer of a water soluble blend ethylenically unsaturated monomers comprising a monomer providing at least 50% by weight carboxylic acid groups and 0.1 to 15% by weight of an amino group containing monomer, and wherein the cross links are amide cross linkages formed between the carboxylic acid groups and the amino groups, wherein the element is an extruded water absorbent water insoluble fiber, film, filament, foam, or coating having a gel capacity of at least 15 grams 0.9% NaCl saline per gram dry polymer made by extruding said linear copolymer in the form of the fiber or film and then forming said amide cross linkages between the carboxylic acid groups and the amino groups.
- 4. A synthetic polymeric element according to claim 3, wherein the monomer providing the carboxylic acid groups is a mixture of free acrylic acid and water soluble alkali metal salts of free acrylic acid in a ratio of 1:1 to 1:10, and the total amount of said mixture is at least 50% by weight of the monomers, wherein the amino groups containing monomers are of amino vinyl ethers, amino vinyl esters, or allylamines, and wherein the monomer blend includes 0 to 45% by weight of the monomers of plasticizing monomer selected from C1-24 alkyl (meth) acrylates.
- 5. A synthetic polymeric element according to claim 4, wherein the monomer blend contains 0 to 45% by weight plasticizing monomer selected from alkyl esters of ethylenically unsaturated acids, acrylonitriles, styrenes, or vinyl esters.
- 6. A synthetic polymeric element according to claim 4, wherein the blend comprises 0.1 to 10% by weight of the amino group containing monomer, 60 to 89.9% by weight acrylic acid or water soluble salt of acrylic acid, and 0 to 30% by weight methyl acrylate.
