- 5. Apparatus for applying segments of heat shrinkable material to an article having a cylindrical body and at least one end portion adjoining and sloping inwardly from such body said apparatus comprising:
- (a) at least one pair of spaced, opposing, axially aligned chucks for gripping the ends of such articles and for spinning them about their cylindrical axes
- (b) means for moving such pair of chucks along a closed path
- (c) means for spinning said chucks about their common axis during such movement to wrap the material about the body
- (d) an extensible-retractable tongue means insertable when extended between a free standing edge or edges of the material and the end portion or portions of the article associated with at least one of said chucks and serving when in extended position to provide a continuation of the cylindrical body of the article, and
- (e) means for cyclicly operating such extensible--retractable tongue means to cause it to assume extended position during movement of the chucks through a portion of such closed path and to assume retracted portion during movement of the chucks through another portion of such closed path.
- 6. The apparatus of claim 5 in combination with a segment transport, a wrapping means and a seam forming means
- (a) said segment transport being in the form of a rotary vacuum drum adapted to pick up in sequence segments of such heat shrinkable material at a segment receiving station and to rotate each segment to a segment applying station in tangent contact with an article carried by a pair of said chucks, said vacuum drum being provided with a means to apply glue to at least one end of a segment carried thereby
- (b) said wrapping means being downstream from said segment applying station and acting in cooperation with said chucks to wrap each applied segment about its container
- (c) said seam forming means being downstream from said wrapping means and being in the form of a rotary member in tangent relation to said articles carried by said pairs of chucks.
- 7. The apparatus of claim 6 in combination with heat applying means for applying heat to the free standing end portion or portions of such segment applied to said article.
- 8. In the method of applying segments of sheet material to articles each having a cylindrical body and having at least one end portion adjoining the cylindrical body and sloping inwardly therefrom, and wherein said articles and segments are transported separately and simultaneously along separate paths by an article transport and a segment transport, respectively, and wherein the article with the leading end of a segment adhesively attached thereto is then caused to rotate about its cylindrical axis to accomplish wrapping of the segment around the article and to adhesively form a seam at the overlap of the trailing and leading ends of the segment, the improvement which comprises
- (a) providing such segments in the form of heat shrinkable sheet material each having a leading end, a trailing end, a length between the leading and trailing ends which is greater than the circumference of the cylindrical body and having a width which is greater than the height of the cylindrical body
- (b) transporting each article and its intended segment along separate paths to a position where the leading end of the segment is tangent to the cylindrical body of the article
- (c) applying pressure at such tangent position between the segment transport and the article sufficient to adhesively secure the leading end of the segment to the cylindrical body of the article
- (d) spinning the article with a segment so attached and wrapping of the segment about the article,
- (e) then forming an adhesive seam between the trailing and leading ends of the segment, thereby forming an article with a segment wrapped tightly about and adhesively secured to its body with a free standing edge or edges projecting beyond the body and
- (f) interposing between the free standing edge or edges of the segment and the sloping portion or portions of the article an extensible-retractable tongue or tongues which provide a continuation of said body portion and which assist in seam formation.
- 9. The method of claim 8 wherein the segment is transported by a rotary vacuum drum, the article is transported by a rotary article transport, the two transports bring the leading end of each segment into tangent contact with an article, and the article transport, after attachment of the leading end, spins the article to wrap the segment around it.
- 10. The method of claim 8 wherein heat is applied to the free standing edge or edges after seam formation to shrink them onto the sloping end portion or portions.
