Claims
- 1. A system for remotely reading and monitoring utility usage, comprising:
a utility meter having a disk configured to rotate at a speed that is related to utility usage; a piece of lightweight tape applied to the disk, having at least one highly reflective section and at least one substantially non-reflective section so as to produce contrasting sections of reflective material and non-reflective material on the lightweight tape; an optical sensor; a circuit card capable of interpreting the readings of the optical sensor; and a device for transmitting data to a remote location.
- 2. The system of claim 1, wherein the lightweight tape and at least one optical sensor are retrofitted to an existing utility meter.
- 3. The system of claim 1, where the lightweight tape, at least one optical sensor and a circuit card are retrofitted to an existing utility meter.
- 4. The system of claim 1, wherein the lightweight tape is a mylar tape.
- 5. The system of claim 1, wherein the lightweight tape is applied to a surface of the rotating disk and at least one optical sensor is aligned with the lightweight tape as it is carried through revolutions on the rotating disk so as to read the reflective and non-reflective sections of the lightweight tape as the rotating disk revolves with utility usage.
- 6. The system of claim 5, wherein the optical sensor reads the reflective and non-reflective sections of the lightweight tape and reports “sensing” or “non-sensing” states data to the circuit card;
the sensing state occurs when the optical sensor is reading a reflective or non-reflective section of the lightweight tape; and the non-sensing state occurs when the optical sensor is reading the rotating disk and not the lightweight tape.
- 7. The system of claim 1, wherein the lightweight tape has more than one reflective section and more than one non-reflective section.
- 8. The system of claim 7, further comprising a lightweight tape having reflective and non-reflective sections wherein the reflective sections have a predefined width and spacing and the non-reflective sections have a predefined width and spacing.
- 9. The system of claim 8, wherein the reflective sections have equivalent widths and spacing and the non-reflective sections have equivalent widths and spacing.
- 10. The system of claim 8, wherein the widths and spacing of the non-reflective sections are non-equivalent so that the optical sensor may detect the rotational direction of the rotating disk.
- 11. The system of claim 1, further comprising a second optical sensor wherein a first optical sensor and the second optical sensor are both aligned with the lightweight tape so as to read the reflective and non-reflective sections and determine rotational speed and direction of rotation of the rotating disk.
- 12. The system of claim 11, wherein the first and second optical sensors read the reflective and non-reflective sections of the lightweight tape and report “sensing” or “nonsensing” states data to the circuit card;
the sensing state occurs when at least one of the optical sensors is reading a reflective or non-reflective section of the lightweight tape; the non-sensing state occurs when both the first and second optical sensors are reading the rotating device and not the lightweight tape.
- 13. A system for remotely reading and monitoring utility usage with a utility meter, a lightweight tape, an optical sensor and a circuit card, comprising:
means for measuring the number of revolutions and rotational speed of a rotating disk, wherein each revolution is related to the amount of utility usage; and means for determining the direction of rotation of the rotating disk.
- 14. The system of claim 13, wherein the means for measuring the number of revolutions and rotational speed of the rotating disk comprises:
a lightweight tape, having reflective and non-reflective sections; application of the lightweight tape to the rotating disk; aligning an optical sensor with the lightweight tape so as to read the sections of the lightweight tape as the tape passes by the optical sensor with each revolution of the rotating disk; connecting the optical sensor to a circuit card; interpreting the optical sensor readings; and transferring said read data to a remote location.
- 15. The system of claim 14, wherein the lightweight tape is a mylar tape.
- 16. The system of claim 13, wherein the means for determining the direction of rotation of the rotating disk comprises:
a lightweight tape, having multiple reflective sections with predefined widths and spacing, and having multiple non-reflective sections with predefined widths and spacing; applying the lightweight tape to the rotating disk; aligning an optical sensor with the lightweight tape so as to read the reflective and nonreflective sections of the lightweight tape as the tape passes by the optical sensor with each revolution of the rotating disk; configuring the widths and spacing of the reflective and non-reflective sections of the lightweight tape so as to distinguish a forward movement of the rotating disk from a backward movement of the rotating disk when the lightweight tape is read by the optical sensor; connecting the optical sensor to a circuit card; and interpreting the optical sensor readings.
- 17. The system of claim 16, wherein the lightweight tape is a reflective mylar tape.
- 18. The system of claim 13, wherein the lightweight tape, at least one optical sensor, a circuit card and a transmission device are retrofitted to an existing utility meter.
- 19. A method for remotely reading and monitoring utility consumption, comprising:
providing a lightweight tape having at least one highly reflective section and at least one substantially non-reflective section; applying the lightweight tape to a disk of a utility meter configured for rotation; and installing at least one optical sensor in the utility meter, the optical sensor being disposed for periodic alignment with the lightweight tape as it is carried through the rotations of the disk.
- 20. The method of claim 19, further comprising the step of applying the lightweight tape to a surface of the rotating device of a utility meter.
- 21. The method of claim 19, further comprising the step of retrofitting an existing utility meter with the lightweight tape, at least one optical sensor and a circuit card.
- 22. The method of claim 19, further comprising the step of manufacturing the lightweight tape from mylar.
- 23. The method of claim 19, further comprising the step of configuring the lightweight tape to have multiple reflective sections with predefined widths and spacing, and to have multiple non-reflective sections with predefined widths and spacing.
- 24. The method of claim 23, further comprising the step of variably configuring the widths and spacing of the reflective and non-reflective sections of the lightweight tape so as to enable a monitoring program to distinguish a rotational direction of the rotating disk.
- 25. The method of claim 19, further comprising the step of reading the reflective and non-reflective sections of the lightweight tape as it revolves with the rotating device to produce data signals.
- 26. The method of claim 25, further comprising the step of interpreting the data signals from the optical sensor to the circuit card.
- 26. The method of claim 25, further comprising the step of transmitting the data signals to a remote location.
