Claims
- 1. A method for managing a distribution facility, the method comprising:
receiving descriptions of multiple orders from an order-management subsystem; determining that a particular order among the multiple orders is currently fillable, based the descriptions from the order-management subsystem; in response to determining that the particular order is currently fillable, automatically communicating with a rate subsystem to obtain shipping rate information; automatically assigning the particular order to a carrier, based on the information from the rate subsystem; and in response to assigning the particular order to the carrier, automatically causing a transportation subsystem to transport items for the particular order to one or more distribution stations.
- 2. The method of claim 1, wherein:
the method further comprises receiving notification of a manufacturing event from the transportation subsystem; and the step of determining that the particular order is currently fillable is performed automatically, in response to receiving the notification of the manufacturing event from the transportation subsystem.
- 3. The method of claim 2, wherein the step of receiving notification of a manufacturing event comprises receiving data which indicates that the distribution facility has received an item.
- 4. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of automatically assigning the particular order to a carrier comprises:
obtaining shipping instructions from a database; and assigning the carrier based at least in part on the shipping instructions.
- 5. The method of claim 4, wherein the step of automatically assigning the particular order to a carrier further comprises:
obtaining order information from an order-management subsystem; and assigning the carrier based at least in part on the order information.
- 6. One or more computer-usable media including encoded logic for use in for managing a distribution facility, the encoded logic comprising logic that performs the steps of:
receiving descriptions of multiple orders from an order-management subsystem; determining that a particular order among the multiple orders is currently fillable, based the descriptions from the order-management subsystem; in response to determining that the particular order is currently fillable, automatically communicating with a rate subsystem to obtain shipping rate information; automatically assigning the particular order to a carrier, based on the information from the rate subsystem; and in response to assigning the particular order to the carrier, automatically causing a transportation subsystem to transport items for the particular order to one or more distribution stations.
- 7. The one or more computer-usable media of claim 6, wherein the logic automatically determines that the particular order is currently fillable, in response to notification of a manufacturing event from the transportation subsystem.
- 8. The one or more computer-usable media of claim 7, wherein the manufacturing event comprises the distribution facility receiving one of the requested items.
- 9. The one or more computer-usable media of claim 6, wherein the carrier assignment is based at least in part on shipping instructions obtained from a database.
- 10. The one or more computer-usable media of claim 9, wherein the carrier assignment is based at least in part on order information obtained from an order-management subsystem.
- 11. A data processing system, for use in a distribution facility that ships items according to customer orders, the data processing system comprising:
processing resources; and instructions that, when executed by the processing resources, perform the steps of:
receiving descriptions of multiple orders from an order-management subsystem; determining that a particular order among the multiple orders is currently fillable, based the descriptions from the order-management subsystem; in response to determining that the particular order is currently fillable, automatically communicating with a rate subsystem to obtain shipping rate information; automatically assigning the particular order to a carrier, based on the information from the rate subsystem; and in response to assigning the particular order to the carrier, automatically causing a transportation subsystem to transport items for the particular order to one or more distribution stations.
- 12. The data processing system of claim 11, further comprising:
at least one input device that detects at least one manufacturing event, the data processing system determining that the particular order is currently fillable automatically, in response to the at least one input device detecting the at least one manufacturing event.
- 13. The data processing system of claim 12, wherein the at least one input device comprises a scanner.
- 14. The data processing system of claim 13, wherein the manufacturing event comprises the distribution facility receiving one of the requested items.
- 15. The data processing system of claim 11, wherein the carrier assignment is based at least in part on shipping instructions obtained from a database.
- 16. The data processing system of claim 15, wherein the carrier assignment is based at least in part on order information obtained from an order-management subsystem.
