Claims
- 1. A method of substantially maintaining an established error count for data transmitted on a WDM optical communication network, said method comprising:
obtaining a previous interval FEC error count associated with data transmitted on one of a plurality of channels of said network; comparing said previous interval FEC error count to a reference error count associated with said channel; adjusting one of a plurality of operational parameters associated with said channel in response to said comparison; and repeating said obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps to adjust each of said plurality of said operational parameters on an automatic periodic basis.
- 2. A method according to claim 1, wherein said previous interval FEC error count is for a previous 15-minute FEC error count reporting interval.
- 3. A method according to claim 1, wherein said reference error count for each periodic adjustment comprises said previous FEC error count for a prior one of said periodic adjustments.
- 4. A method according to claim 1, wherein said plurality of operational parameters comprises transmitter operational parameters associated with a transmitter of said data.
- 5. A method according to claim 4, wherein plurality of operational parameters comprises: wavelength, RZ coefficient, phase modulation magnitude, and phase angle.
- 6. A method according to claim 5, wherein said one of a plurality of operational parameters comprises wavelength, and wherein said repeating step comprises repeating said obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps to adjust RZ coefficient, phase modulation magnitude, and then phase angle in order.
- 7. A method according to claim 1, wherein said plurality of operational parameters comprises receiver operational parameters associated with a receiver of said data.
- 8. A method according to claim 7, wherein said plurality of operational parameters comprises: CDR sampling phase, limiting amplifier threshold, and CDR decision threshold.
- 9. A method according to claim 8, wherein said one of a plurality of operational parameters comprises CDR sampling phase, and wherein said repeating step comprises repeating said obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps to adjust limiting amplifier threshold and then CDR decision threshold in order.
- 10. A method according to claim 1, wherein said plurality of operational parameters comprises a transmitted amplitude of a signal representing said data.
- 11. A method according to claim 1, wherein said repeating step comprises:
repeating said obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps to adjust each of said plurality of said operational parameters at a different time and on an automatic periodic basis.
- 12. A method according to claim 1, wherein said repeating step comprises repeating said obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps to adjust each of said plurality of said operational parameters for each of said plurality of channels on an automatic periodic basis.
- 13. A machine-readable medium whose contents cause a computer system to perform a method of substantially maintaining an established error count for data transmitted on a WDM optical communication network, said method comprising:
obtaining a previous interval FEC error count associated with data transmitted on one of a plurality of channels of said network; comparing said previous interval FEC error count to a reference error count associated with said channel; adjusting one of a plurality of operational parameters associated with said channel in response to said comparison; and repeating said obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps to adjust each of said plurality of said operational parameters on an automatic periodic basis.
- 14. A machine-readable medium according to claim 13, wherein said previous interval FEC error count is for a previous 15-minute FEC error count reporting interval.
- 15. A machine-readable medium according to claim 13, wherein said reference error count for each periodic adjustment comprises said previous FEC error count for a prior one of said periodic adjustments.
- 16. A machine-readable medium according to claim 13, wherein said plurality of operational parameters comprises transmitter operational parameters associated with a transmitter of said data.
- 17. A machine-readable medium according to claim 16, wherein plurality of operational parameters comprises: wavelength, RZ coefficient, phase modulation magnitude, and phase angle.
- 18. A machine-readable medium according to claim 17, wherein said one of a plurality of operational parameters comprises wavelength, and wherein said repeating step comprises repeating said obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps to adjust RZ coefficient, phase modulation magnitude, and then phase angle in order.
- 19. A machine-readable medium according to claim 13, wherein said plurality of operational parameters comprises receiver operational parameters associated with a receiver of said data.
- 20. A machine-readable medium according to claim 19, wherein said plurality of operational parameters comprises: CDR sampling phase, limiting amplifier threshold, and CDR decision threshold.
- 21. A machine-readable medium according to claim 20, wherein said one of a plurality of operational parameters comprises CDR sampling phase, and wherein said repeating step comprises repeating said obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps to adjust limiting amplifier threshold and then CDR decision threshold in order.
- 22. A machine-readable medium according to claim 13, wherein said plurality of operational parameters comprises a transmitted amplitude of a signal representing said data.
- 23. A machine-readable medium according to claim 13, wherein said repeating step comprises:
repeating said obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps to adjust each of said plurality of said operational parameters at a different time and on an automatic periodic basis.
- 24. A machine-readable medium according to claim 13, wherein said repeating step comprises repeating said obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps to adjust each of said plurality of said operational parameters for each of said plurality of channels on an automatic periodic basis.
- 25. A method of substantially maintaining an established error count for data transmitted on a WDM optical communication network, said method comprising:
obtaining a previous interval FEC error count associated with each of a plurality of channels of said network; identifying one of said channels having a highest associated one of said previous interval FEC error counts compared to the other ones of said channels; adjusting an operational parameter associated with said one of said channels; repeating said obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps on an automatic periodic basis.
- 26. A method according to claim 25, wherein operational parameter comprises a transmitted amplitude of a signal representing data transmitted on said one of said channels.
- 27. A method according to claim 25, wherein said previous interval FEC error count is for a previous 15-minute FEC error count reporting interval.
- 28. A method according to claim 25, said method further comprising comparing said highest associated one of said previous interval FEC error counts with a reference error count, and wherein said adjusting step comprises adjusting said operational parameter associated with said one of said channels in response to said comparison.
- 29. A method according to claim 28, wherein said reference error count for each periodic adjustment comprises said highest associated one of said previous interval FEC error counts for a prior one of said periodic adjustments.
- 30. A machine-readable medium whose contents cause computer system to perform a method of substantially maintaining an established error count for data transmitted on a WDM optical communication network, said method comprising:
obtaining a previous interval FEC error count associated with each of a plurality of channels of said network; identifying one of said channels having a highest associated one of said previous interval FEC error counts compared to the other ones of said channels; adjusting an operational parameter associated with said one of said channels; repeating said obtaining, comparing and adjusting steps on an automatic periodic basis.
- 31. A machine-readable medium according to claim 30, wherein operational parameter comprises a transmitted amplitude of a signal representing data transmitted on said one of said channels.
- 32. A machine-readable medium according to claim 30, wherein said previous interval FEC error count is for a previous 15-minute FEC error count reporting interval.
- 33. A machine-readable medium according to claim 30, said method further comprising comparing said highest associated one of said previous interval FEC error counts with a reference error count, and wherein said adjusting step comprises adjusting said operational parameter associated with said one of said channels in response to said comparison.
- 34. A machine-readable medium according to claim 33, wherein said reference error count for each periodic adjustment comprises said highest associated one of said previous interval FEC error counts for a prior one of said periodic adjustments.
