Claims
- 1. A method of navigating a linear Web tour on the World-Wide Web, the linear Web tour including a plurality of websites at respective remote information nodes, the plurality of websites associated by a series of exclusive forward links, each website having a plurality of individual media elements, including a base media element, the method comprising the steps of:
downloading and displaying a first base media element of a first website of the linear Web tour on a display device at a user location; responding to commands of a user to download and display selected individual media elements of the first website of the linear Web tour on the display device, the first website having an exclusive forward link to a second website of the linear Web tour; displaying a forward link button on the display device; receiving a first signal in response to an action of the user indicating an activation of the forward link button; downloading and displaying a second base media element of the second website on the display device; and responding to commands of a user to download and display selected individual media elements of the second website of the linear Web program on the display device at the user location, the second website having an exclusive forward link to a third website of the linear Web tour.
- 2. The method of claim 1 wherein at least one of the base media elements is a homepage of the corresponding one of the plurality of websites.
- 3. The method of claim 1 wherein the step of responding to commands of a user to download and display selected individual media elements of the first website comprises displaying the selected individual media elements of the first website in a framed window.
- 4. The method of claim 3 wherein the step of displaying the forward link button comprises displaying the forward link button outside of the framed window.
- 5. The method of claim 4 further comprising:
displaying to the user a plurality of indicators, each indicator representative of a respective website of a selected portion of the linear Web tour.
- 6. The method of claim 5 wherein at least one indicator includes text indicative of the respective website.
- 7. The method of claim 5 further comprising:
receiving a second signal in response to an action of the user indicating selection of a selected website of the selected portion of the Web tour; downloading and displaying a base media element for the selected website on the display device; and responding to commands of a user to download and display selected individual media elements of the selected website of the linear Web tour on the display device at the user location.
- 8. The method of claim 7 wherein receiving the second signal comprises recognizing an action of the user to select an indicator corresponding to the selected website.
- 9. The method of claim 1 wherein the second website comprises a home page and wherein responding to commands of a user to download and display selected individual media elements of the second website includes displaying the home page of the second website.
- 10. The method of claim 1 wherein each of the selected ones of the plurality of websites is stored at a remote information node.
- 11. The method of claim 1 wherein responding to commands of a user to download and display selected individual media elements of the second website includes downloading the selected individual media elements of the second website from the common remote information node.
- 12. The method of claim 1 further comprising:
displaying a back link button on the display device; and receiving a first signal in response to an action of the user indicating an activation of the back link button.
- 13. In a distributed hypermedia data network including a plurality of websites at respective remote information nodes, each website having a plurality of individual media elements, including a base media element, associated by a indexed tree, a system for navigating a linear Web tour comprising selected ones of the plurality of websites at a user location associated by a series of exclusive forward links, the system comprising:
a plurality of remote information nodes coupled to the distributed hypermedia network, each of the remote information nodes storing at least one of the selected ones of the plurality of websites; a subscriber station, in communication with the plurality of remote information nodes, for displaying a base media element of a first website of the linear Web tour on a display device at the user location, for responding to commands of a user to download and display selected individual media elements of the first website of the linear Web tour on the display device, the first website having an exclusive forward link to a second website of the linear Web tour, for displaying a forward link button on the display device, for receiving a first signal in response to an action of the user indicating an activation of the forward link button, for displaying the base media element of the second website on the display device; and for responding to commands of a user to download and display selected individual media elements of the second website of the linear Web tour on the display device at the user location, the second website having an exclusive forward link to a third website of the linear Web tour.
- 14. A method of creating a linear Web tour comprising a linear linked-sequence of program elements on the World-Wide Web, the World-Wide Web including a plurality of websites at respective remote information nodes, each website having a plurality of individual media elements, the method comprising;
selecting a first base media element corresponding to a first web page; selecting a second base media element corresponding to a Web page; and wherein the linear linked-sequence of program elements includes the first base media element and the second base media element.
- 15. The method of 14 wherein the step of selecting a first base media element includes responding to a command of a user to select the first Web page as the first base media element.
- 16. The method of claim 14 wherein selecting a first base media element includes automatically selecting a first web page as the first base media element.
- 17. The method of claim 14 further comprising:
assigning the first base media element to a first program element of the linear linked-sequence of program elements.
- 18. The method of claim 14 further comprising:
responding to a command of a user to assign the first base media element as a selected one of the linear linked-sequence of program elements; and assigning the first base media element to the selected one of the linear linked-sequence of program elements.
- 19. A method of creating a linear Web tour comprising a linear linked-sequence of program elements on the World-Wide Web, wherein the World-Wide Web includes a plurality of websites at respective remote information nodes, each website having a plurality of individual media elements, the method comprising:
receiving at least one criteria from a user at a user location; evaluating a plurality of individual media elements; selecting a first base media element corresponding to a first individual media element, that meets the criteria, of the plurality of individual media elements; selecting a second base media element corresponding to a second individual media element that meets the criteria; and wherein the linear linked-sequence of program elements includes the first base media element and the second base media element.
- 20. The method of claim 19, wherein a director manually performs the steps of receiving at least one criteria, evaluating a plurality of media elements, selecting a first media element and selecting a second media element.
- 21. The method of claim 19 wherein at least one criteria comprises user preferences.
- 22. The method of claim 21 wherein the first base media element comprises a shopping website.
- 23. The method of claim 20 further comprising delivering the linear linked-sequence of program elements to the user by email.
