Claims
- 1. A method for creating a rights expression for association with an item for use in a system for controlling use of the item in accordance with the rights expression, said method comprising:
specifying rights expression information indicating a manner of use of an item; and generating a modulated light signal based representation of said rights expression information, wherein said modulated light signal based representation is configured to be interpreted by an interpreter of a system for controlling use of said item to permit enforcement of said rights expression based on said rights expression information.
- 2. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein said modulated light signal is within a visible spectrum of a human.
- 3. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein said modulated light signal is not within a visible spectrum of a human.
- 4. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
transmitting said modulated light signal to cause a device to enforce said rights expression information.
- 5. The method as recited in claim 4, further comprising:
transmitting said modulated light signal via a light fixture.
- 6. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein said modulated signal based representation comprises modulated light pulses.
- 7. The method as recited in claim 6, further comprising:
varying characteristics of said modulated light pulses to correspond to a plurality of interpretations for said rights expression information.
- 8. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
transmitting said modulated light signal to a computing device via a display device to cause said computing device to enforce said rights expression information.
- 9. The method as recited in claim 1, wherein said rights expression information includes conditions that must be satisfied in order to exercise a manner of use of at least one of digital content, a service, an abstract object, a resource, and goods.
- 10. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
generating said modulated light signal based representation of said rights expression information including a first modulated light signal that is interpreted if a second modulated light signal is present in a predetermined manner.
- 11. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
determining that said modulated light signal based representation of said rights expression information is unaltered as a condition for interpretation of said modulated light signal based representation.
- 12. The method as recited in claim 1, further comprising:
configuring said modulated light signal based representation as a pointer to one of another modulated light signal based representation associated with said rights expression information, and information associated with said rights expression information.
- 13. A system for creating a rights expression for association with an item to facilitate controlling use of the item in accordance with the rights expression, said system comprising:
means for specifying rights expression information indicating a manner of use of an item; and means for generating a modulated light signal based representation of said rights expression information, wherein said modulated light signal based representation is configured to be interpreted by an interpreter of a system for controlling use of said item to permit enforcement of said rights expression based on said rights expression information.
- 14. The system as recited in claim 13, wherein said modulated light signal is within a visible spectrum of a human.
- 15. The system as recited in claim 13, wherein said modulated light signal is not within a visible spectrum of a human.
- 16. The system as recited in claim 13, further comprising:
means for transmitting said modulated light signal to cause a device to enforce said rights expression information.
- 17. The system as recited in claim 16, further comprising:
means for transmitting said modulated light signal via a light fixture.
- 18. The system as recited in claim 13, wherein said modulated signal based representation comprises modulated light pulses.
- 19. The system as recited in claim 18, further comprising:
means for varying characteristics of said modulated light pulses to correspond to a plurality of interpretations for said rights expression information.
- 20. The system as recited in claim 13, further comprising:
means for transmitting said modulated light signal to a computing device via a display device to cause said computing device to enforce said rights expression information.
- 21. The system as recited in claim 13, wherein said rights expression information includes conditions that must be satisfied in order to exercise a manner of use of at least one of digital content, a service, an abstract object, a resource, and goods.
- 22. The system as recited in claim 13, further comprising:
means for generating said modulated light signal based representation of said rights expression information including a first modulated light signal that is interpreted if a second modulated light signal is present in a predetermined manner.
- 23. The system as recited in claim 13, further comprising:
means for determining that said modulated light signal based representation of said rights expression information is unaltered as a condition for interpretation of said modulated light signal based representation.
- 24. The system as recited in claim 13, further comprising:
means for configuring said modulated light signal based representation as a pointer to one of another modulated light signal based representation associated with said rights expression information, and information associated with said rights expression information.
- 25. The system as recited in claim 13, wherein said means for specifying and said means for generating comprise devices of a computer system.
- 26. The system as recited in claim 13, wherein said means for specifying and said means for generating comprise computer readable instructions recorded on a medium.
- 27. In a system for controlling use of the item in accordance with a rights expression associated with said item, a rights expression comprising:
rights expression information indicating a manner of use of an item; and a modulated light signal representation of said rights expression information, wherein said representation is configured to be interpreted by an interpreter of a system for controlling use of said item to permit enforcement of said rights expression based on said rights expression information.
