Claims
- 1. A system for determining a location of a mobile terminal, comprising:
the mobile terminal, which receives a plurality of global positioning system (GPS) signals and measures a signal characteristic corresponding to each of the received GPS signals; a communication satellite that sends a forward control channel to the mobile terminal, receives an access request from the mobile terminal and compares timing of the received access request to an internal reference to generate timing correction information to send to the mobile terminal to adjust its data transmission timing so that data received from the mobile terminal does not overlap data received from other mobile terminals; a SOC to which the mobile terminal sends a message containing the timing correction information and the signal characteristic for each of the received signals, the SOC determining a range arc with the communication satellite at its origin using the timing correction information, the SOC determining possible locations of the mobile terminal on or near where the range the range arc intersects a surface of the Earth and using the signal characteristic to refine the possible locations and determine a final position of the mobile terminal.
- 2. The system recited in claim 1, wherein the final position is determined by analyzing one or more of residuals, altitude and proximity to a beam boundary of the communication satellite.
- 3. The system recited in claim 1, wherein the signal characteristic is a code phase measurement.
- 4. The system recited in claim 1, wherein the signal characteristic is Doppler.
- 5. The system recited in claim 1, wherein the signal characteristic is bit phase information.
- 6. The system recited in claim 1, wherein the signal characteristic is carrier phase.
- 7. A method for determining a location of a mobile terminal, comprising steps of:
collecting a plurality of GPS signals in the mobile terminal; measuring a signal characteristic for each of the received GPS signals; sending a forward control channel to the mobile terminal; receiving an access request from the mobile terminal; comparing timing of the received access request with an internal reference; generating timing correction information corresponding to the comparison; sending the timing correction information to the mobile terminal so that the mobile terminal can adjust its data transmission timing; and determining the position of the mobile terminal using the timing correction information and measured signal characteristics.
- 8. The method recited in claim 7, further comprising the steps of:
determining a range arc having a communication satellite at its origin using the timing correction information; and determining the position of the mobile terminal using the range arc.
- 9. The method recited in claim 7, further comprising the step of sending the timing correction information and measured signal characteristics to a satellite operations center through a gateway.
- 10. The method recited in claim 7, further comprising the step of sending the timing correction information and measured signal characteristics directly to a satellite operations center.
- 11. The method recited in claim 7, wherein the measured signal characteristic is code phase.
- 12. The method recited in claim 7, wherein the measured signal characteristic is Doppler.
- 13. The method recited in claim 7, wherein the measured signal characteristic is bit phase.
- 14. The method recited in claim 7, wherein the measured signal characteristic is carrier phase.
- 15. A system for determining a location of a mobile terminal, comprising:
the mobile terminal, which collects a plurality of GPS signals in the mobile terminal and measures a signal characteristic for each of the received GPS signals; a communication satellite to send a forward control channel to the mobile terminal and receive an access request from the mobile terminal; means for comparing timing of the received access request with an internal reference; means for generating timing correction information corresponding to the comparison; means for sending the timing correction information to the mobile terminal so that the mobile terminal can adjust its data transmission timing; and means for determining the position of the mobile terminal using the timing correction information and measured signal characteristics.
- 16. The system recited in claim 15, further comprising:
means for determining a range arc having a communication satellite at its origin using the timing correction information; and means for determining the position of the mobile terminal using the range arc.
- 17. The system recited in claim 15, further comprising means for sending the timing correction information and measured signal characteristics to a satellite operations center through a gateway.
- 18. The system recited in claim 15, further comprising means for sending the timing correction information and measured signal characteristics directly to a satellite operations center.
- 19. The system recited in claim 15, wherein the measured signal characteristic is code phase.
- 20. The system recited in claim 15, wherein the measured signal characteristic is Doppler.
